Watched him closely in person the last two weeks and he has confirmed what I thought - he is a promising tall with good hands and a great propensity to leap aggressively at the footy in his marking routine.

What he doesn’t have is great forward craft in terms of leading patterns and ability to read space and get into that space.

That can come but it needs to be nurtured and protected. Nurtured through game style; keep allowing that movement and educating and getting confidence in both sides of the kick to him that he can get to where he needs to be, and protected in terms of who is getting the task of the target of slow play up the wing, and descended upon by the excellent third man up generation we have right now in the AFL.

Really promising but I would be keen to invest in a Lewis/Larkey/King while we have our window open.

Watch Collingwood try to "ginger up" the new boy. I think he has a bit of the Neil Balmes about him...

JVR would love it if they try that.

Get the kid fired up, I dare ya!

Maybe you should practice what you preach then. Greatest hypocrisy I have read on this site.

I see you did not put the original post I was referring to in as it absolutely backed up my comments. The flat know it all attitude towards JVR game and possibilities for the rising star was exactly what I was referring to.  Anyway I am not spending my time arguing with people like you. Enjoy your rage buddy I want no part of it and if you are going to quote people please use the full post not just a pick and please.

I love the club, I love where its at and I am grateful for being able to experience it.

You should try it.

When reassessing the 2021 draft last night on Sportsday (SEN) Luke Hodge said he would take JVR after Horne-Francis and Nick Daicos.

That’s before Josh Rachele, Sam Darcy, Finn Callaghan, Jye Amiss, Josh Gibcus, Mac Andrew and the rest before JVR was selected at pick 19.

The way we move the ball forward, leading patterns would be of little use.

However, JVR has the football smarts to overcome this apparent deficiency. Let him have the freedom of the forward line and he will shine. We screwed up Jesse by continuously dropping the ball on his head, let's not screw up this kid.

No rage on my part mate, clearly you're angry that someone has a football view different from yours. There was no name calling or hissy fitting in what I wrote, anyway

The difference is my post on JVRs game played the ball, but you appear to be more interested in name calling and playing the man

Have a great evening!

Cheers

Sometimes you have to sit it on heads but I get your point.

His freedom may be his undoing though if he doesn’t get some help soon. If he is our only good tall option - other teams will know that too.

He's very level headed and grounded it seems DZ.

He gets his place in the pecking order vs more senior players like Macca & BB when prodded as to how he feels getting to play alongside some of these experienced forwards at the start of the season.

He was also asked if he felt like he was being challenged when he missed out in the pre-season vs the Tigers.  He said "not at all... still some very good players at Casey and was enjoying his time there" or something to that effect.  Oh yeh and that BB & Macca were in hot form at that point.

Very humble and understood he was in a learning phase just starting out.

Was asked if he felt he could have played last season after kicking a few at VFL.  Said he was still in a learning pathway & AFL was probably going to be somewhat premature last season.  He recognised extra work was needed in the off to build some strength and get his body right.

Loving this season with the boys so far.  Doesn't care what he's asked to do or play on.  Just likes to get on with things.

After being asked if he had a fav player for delivering the ball inside on the lead he said not really as he sees himself more as a pack marking stay-at-home type and not one to be plucking marks on the lead.

Mentioned that the better kicks here were Spargo, Chandler & Hunter in his opinion.

When asked if he was happy to be signed on the new deal & how he felt about living in Melb vs W.A....

Very pleased with the contract and hoped, assuming all going well, that he would end up a one club player.

Melb was challenging when living with host family here in first season but feels he has settled in now that he's moved in with Moniz and liking it alot, much more to do here vs W.A.

Overall he carried himself very well and came across as a very humble grounded fella but very excited with his present direction and enjoying life.

No, i am over incessant negativity against everything for the sake of being heard. It is tiresome. Anyway, I appreciate your new found positivity. Glad to have made a difference.  Gratitude is the attitude 🙏

One of them will win Best First Year Player at our AGM, but which one?

Right now, my money is on Judd. Less spectacular and less noticeable but consistently effective and brings a line breaking attribute we lack.

Half a season to go but at this stage I teams to agree - Judd has gone very nicely under the radar yet exudes confidence with ball in hand.  Clean disposal and great decision maker with spatial awareness.
That said, if mid / forward connection improves JVR could snag a few big bags and steal the limelight.
Either way JT has unearthed a couple of rippers, again.

Speaking of young talent Blake Howes game against Southport was very impressive. Class, courage, great hands and a beautiful kick.  Won't be surprised if a senior look in beckons soon

UP IN LIGHTS by Whispering Jack

Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
