JHF has been pretty good in just his 2nd season (1st in a proper environment).

Usually I would say you need to spread your picks but you also don't win flags without high end talent that comes from top 3-5 draft picks. Most teams have to bottom out after a flag tilt or get gifted academy picks but we have the opportunity to get a top end talent to start preparing for 5 years time when Trac and Oliver are finishing up. If you could do it this year I would (assuming Reid is worth it - I don't know anything about him but I trust JT).

I’m a fan if we gave up 2 picks but 3 is a stretch aka a huge gamble.  

Sounds like Matt Rowell. For the amount this guy was touted as the next big thing he hasn’t really lived up to the hype. He’s no flop and has missed a lot of footy but isn’t bashing the door down.

Agree.  I think it's probably too early and to hard for us mere mortals to guess at who we should go for and around what pick they'll go.

Taylor and Co. Have great exposed form of picking the right targets and then getting the deal done to enable us to land them.  Trading up to pick 4 and then using it to get Oliver is the one that will always take some beating, but I'm sure there pleanty of others along the way too that I'm forgetting.  Kossie was another that people questioned if we should be using as high a pick on at the time, but turned out to be spot on.

In Taylor we trust.

Or we pick up 3 ok players that help on the fringes instead of replacing the generational talent with another young generational talent. 

If Lamb and Taylor do this - the kid must be special.

Based on the number of once in a generation players we have heard about recently, I’m guessing that a football generation is about 1 year long.

Lots of players evey year end up become very good/elite. Top picks are more likely to do so, but top 10, top 15 and top 20 picks all have ended up in that category.

It really comes down to whether you:

-Combine 3 picks to get the best in the draft (highest potential, but untested at AFL), or

-Draft 3 first round players and see which one (or more) develops into an elite player.

 

As @Jaded No More said, they are clearly hoping to find the next super star, to give our list another 5+ years and potentially extend that window.

Obviously each year the depth of talent is different. But personally I would have thought two top 10 picks gives a lower risk than pick 1. And I hope we have some info on any Tassie team, including the types of concessions and consider this in our choice.

Unfortunately I think Hawks will do whatever it takes to finish last and they won’t give him up so the whole discussion becomes irrelevant… unless we end up with pick 2 or 3 from Freo (doubtful) and Hawks are keen to load up because their list is hot garbage. 

West Coast are a lock for the 🥄 haven't completed a Pre Season for 2 years hence the spate of numerous injuries.

Do they even have fitness staff?

They are reinventing the wheel when it comes to taking the tanking stakes to unseen levels in professional sports in this country.

Think Horne-Francis has already changed the way some clubs think about pick 1, and the value of pick 1 against multiple high picks. When he was drafted Adelaide offered North a monster deal which has become the currency for Rankine, Dawson, and Rachele. Looking back North clearly would have taken the deal, and Adelaide wouldn't have offered so much. Last year go home factor comes into play again with GWS paying a premium to get a Vic country lad who they aren't worried about losing, while West Coast are happy to trade back to get two high quality WA kids, knowing that at this stage it's more important for them to get multiple quality youngsters rather than just one. If the Eagles finish last this year I'd be surprised if they didn't trade pick 1. There's a WA key defender who's tracking to be an early first rounder, and I think they'd prefer him and another top 10 pick over just Reid.

Unlike us to advertise our intentions but then again Cal Twomey normally has his finger on the pulse.

As we've been able to confidently do over the past decade: just back the recruiters to make the right call. 

Trust Taylor, I'm just about to tattoo his face on my leg I love that man so much. 

I'm in favour of needs, and I think we are most susceptible to age/injury down back. For me nothing has transformed our team as much as when we went out and built the league best defense (to some derision on $ spent). 

When I was a kid I thought defense was so boring, was always about the power forwards, 70's (wasn't much of a tactical observer it must be said), 80's (fully into wanting a messiah), 90's (happy to not be merde, but anguish that Balme never got a great run with injuries), 00's (hoping to pinch one but always aware we had gaps). Anyway when I look at these teams, with many players I dearly loved, none of them were as tight defensively as what we have now. For sure a Wight, Whelan, Walsh, J.Rivers or Lovett would make it into the current team, but in the big defender department we had Ingerson, Carroll types, who had their (with respect) limitations. The best big defender I could think of was Shanahan who was a bit cooked and cameos from Nietz.

I think our midfield will be set for awhile yet, and midfielders are more common, even if every new one makes the press wet themselves. Also I'm in favour of multiple options in front of goal, but what I really want a settled defense with new Lever/May types coming through. Petty also gives away a few too many frees for my liking in defense(if he was sneakier he could stay a defender). Petty might become a Lever type, but like Tmac, I think he's best suited forward, going straight for goal.

Re Reid, he could be a superstar mid, but I'm pretty happy with the superstar known quantities we have right now. And I'm not basing this just on May's last few games, been thinking this for a while, Jetta had Hibbered take over his lock down role, I can see McVee replacing that. Salem is a question mark, Bowey is good but not Salem game breaking good yet. But Lever and May both seem fragile, and they are the pillars that everything else works off. More defenders please.

I would even trade a picks to Carlton for Weitering, to take over from May and be our 3rd tall defender.

We were not in the position we are now

Not all pick 1s are the same.  If Reid is the talent that’s being spoken of every team would make that deal. I trust Taylor. either way some talent is coming through the door.

It all depends how well they think he can play. As long as we get top quality talent.

I’ve watched a few highlights of Reid and admit he’s very good. His recent game in the Gather Round was apparently superb against bigger SANFL bodies.

He looks to be quite good aerially which is a huge bonus for a mid.

But..

There’s something about the fend offs that bothers me, I hate it when anyone does it and a young guy that’s built his game around it just doesn’t excite me. Tackling has never been better and most AFL players are still strong enough to get a handball away in a tackle.

For what it’s worth, I wouldn’t want to risk 3 picks on one player however I can see the appeal from an immediate impact perspective
