I couldn’t watch the game because unfortunately I’m cruising through the Mediterranean, currently floating off the coast of Sorrento. Can’t wait to see the replay.

There’s not really any point to this story. Just gloating.

It's a hard life.

Trying to find some media write ups. The Sun has nothing on our game even though it was a smashing of last years grand finalist. and the Age has a small article hidden away

god knows if we lost by 50 we’d be on the back page!

Easily our best all round performance since 2021 finals and a great response to the dross served up the previous week. Not really a poor player and isn't it great to see young talent perform McVee, Chandler and Roo.

Much to like, in no particular order!

Coaching....Often playing Sydney, games are lost within the coaching box.  It was nice to see Goodwin/Yze making some wholesale changes.  Sydney usually just sweat on us to win clearances (Like Brisbane did most of last week).  We let them win the ball, and sweated on them instead.  We start adding these layers and we are going to be fearful to play against.  Players are in better positions when we man the outside too.   It is a subtle shift we needed to make.  We have been beaten in the same manner many times.  Hunters>Hunted!

Petty and JVR were both huge for us in the forward half.  Most kicks in their vicinity were  brought to ground, our smaller guys relished this and our forward line looked better than it has in a long time.  Nearly every team has a CHB type like Mccartin...Petty could be huge in this role as it stops a lot of the rebound they get from taking intercept marks all day.

Chandler was exceptional all over the ground, so much to like about his game...his best so far!

McVee is amazing, he just glides through traffic.  Stunned how quickly he is coming on!

Spargo. Probably the most impactful 6 possession game i ever seen.  The bunny hop contender for mark of the year, could not stop laughing!

JVR, take a bow kid!  First minute injected into the game and he lays a massive bump.   Competes all day, brought ball to ground regularly, tackled and looked a nice kick.  Great debut!

JJ played a great game.  Was creative, hit targets and even showed some flair.  If he plays like this on the regular, Harmes is going to find it impossible to get back into the team as a mid.

Grundy & Hunter their best games for the Dees so far.  Both building and fitting in nicely.

All of our regular guns played well enough, but i thought our bottom 6 today were suberb.  If Viney is your weakest link you have sooooooo much to be bullish about!

It seems to contend this year, going to need to kick big scores.   There are not too many that could kick 11 in the last quarter.  Both Melbourne and Collingwood are going to blow some teams away in short periods.    So glad we have shifted away from defensive style to a much more dynamic and inspiring style where players get to show their skills.

So much to build on and get excited about!  Go Demons!!!

That was great to watch!

I'll never hang [censored] on Viney or T-Mac or Brown like many do.  I just can't do it.

T-mac shoving that Bulldog off the goal line for I think what was Sparrows 50m goal in the 21 flag - almost my favourite part of that game.

He is a servant.  A club legend. Forever.

Viney has never been the most skilled ever.  But he is a beast.  Premiership player.

Bugger it.  I'm not ever throwing shade on any of our premiership players.  No matter how they dip in form.

The years of pain, oh the years of pain. hahaha.

Carn the might dees.!

Yesterday was the perfect response to our poor effort against Brisbane. Swans fought hard in many parts of the game until they broke even in the third quarter which would have seen us capitulate last season. Great to see exciting new talent like McVee, JVR and Chandler stepping up and older hands who were a little fragile back to good form. Recruiting Grundy is looking like a master stroke. JVR made an impressive debut. Impressively tough, competitive, composed kicking and marking presence for a first game player.

Interesting stat from the weekend. On debut JVR had 6 tackles.

In 61 games Weideman has never had that many. He’s had 5 twice.

JVR is a very competitive young man - he gives himself every chance of being a 200+ gamer.

I thought Petty was ordinary up fwd. No better than Tom McD. Brown did very little as well.

Really?  I thought that Petty added defensive mongrel to prevent the easy clearances and uncontested marks we saw so often in the second half or 2022.

Me too, thought he was a real presence and they had to be mindful of his marking ability.

I think Nibbler is having a good year so far.  No doubt he's playing his role defensively getting up and down the ground with his elite endurance, but I actually think his offensive game is better this year than last too.  I think he's getting involved in more goal scoring plays and kicking the odd one himself too, by pushing forward into space and really following the ball forward and crumbling.

In 2021, I thought Nibbler had a pretty good year, so hopefully it's something of an omen.

I watched Kade Chandler closely quite a bit yesterday. It seemed to me Kade did a fair bit more of the arc to arc running yesterday (which is one of Nibbler's key roles), and i think Nibbler did less (certainly on the GPS numbers ANB's numbers were well below his normal output), allowing him to play a more true half forward flanker role.

Which means, if that is indeed the case, Nibbler is less gassed, less often and more able to convert goal scoring opportunities, like his brilliant set shot - because he is not spending 30 seconds just trying to get his breath back before taking the kick.

I think that sort of running helps Kade stay in the team.

This.

The way we choose to bring the ball forward off 'slow play', I.e. in the situations where we haven't forced a turnover and been able to slingshot forward, absolutely demands a physical contest from our forwards. Petty is excellent at this and it has been a massive weakness of our group in recent times.

How great was the 100 metre sprint down the Southern stand wing to the Punt Rd and getting on the end of that kick! I reckon you would have seen the whole show where you sit Binman!

Precisely.

With Tmac out (who wasn't bringing the ball to ground as well as he usually does) we needed someone else to play the role to ensure the oppo don't intercept mark and to give our small forwards a chance to win the ground ball.

And Petty, with his competitiveness, aerial strength, defensive nous and ability to read the flight of the ball was the perfect replacement. He played the role brilliant i thought.

As expected, Van Ruin, was also fantastic in creating aerial contests and negating oppo interceptors.

Super smart coaching by Goody.

But kudos also has to go the back 7 for making it possible (if their three talls got on top he surely would have been sent back).

Ditto for me.  What a win and what a day to draw a line in the sand on Clarry's 150th.

So proud of the boys.  Clarry was unreal as usual and Grundy slowly worked his way into things and got better as the game went on, especially after half time.

Congrats to Goody & the FD for finally making a few hard call / changes to the forward line up, including Petty forward which many been calling for for a while.  One week doesn't a summer make but it also takes time for a player to make the mental change from defensive to offensive mindset.  In addition you have to learn where to run and to start gelling with other mids and forwards.  That doesn't happen overnight.  A very nice entre' though for mine.  Let's keep it going and see how things pan out.

Rooey did even better than i could hope for on his debut.  Well earned and nice to finally have a very mobile dead eye in front of goal from 30 - 35 out who can also take the odd specky.

Juddy Juddy Juddy .... how composed is this young fella.  Wow i watched him alot last year, including his match against the Swans at the G with Casey.  He showed signs and patches of very nice work but boy, he's slotted in amazingly well.  A bit like Bowey when he came in late in 2021.  Superb stuff.

Oli Sestan the next likely Juddy / Bowey up-and-comer at Casey?

Kozzy back next week.  Let's keep the momentum rolling eh.

Carn the Mighty Demons!

Great review DD also had another player announce himself at Casey yesterday Blake Howes 33 possession game and 16 marks if he keeps that form up he will debut this year.!!!!

What's your thoughts on this week Binman? Think Petty will stay in a forward role or will he go back?

I prefer our backline mix with the three talls personally, but nice to see we can get creative and still win comfortably.

    MELBOURNE BUSINESS by The Oracle

In days of old, this week’s Thursday night AFL match up between the Demons and the Blues would be framed on the basis of the need to redress the fact that Carlton “stole” last year’s semi final away from Melbourne and with it, their hopes for the premiership.  A hot gospelling coach might point out to his charges that they were the better team on the night in all facets and that poor kicking for goal and a couple of lapses at the death cost them what was rightfully theirs. Moreover, now was

THE MEANING OF FOOTY by Whispering Jack

Throughout history various philosophers have grappled with the meaning of life. Aristotle, Aquinas, Kant, Nietzsche, Schopenhauer and a multitude of authors of diverse religious texts all tried. As society became more complex, the question became attached to specific endeavours in life even including sporting pursuits where such questions arose among our game’s commentariat as, “what is the meaning of football”? Melbourne coach Simon Goodwin must be tired of dealing with such a dilemma but,
