Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

Goodwin on van Rooyed debut:

young-demon-to-make-debut-against-high-flying-swans

"He's trained with these guys for a few years now, so he's got pretty good cohesion with this group already, and one thing you'll see from big Rooey is his ability to compete aerially," Goodwin said.

"He goes at the ball hard, he creates a contest and his follow-up at ground level is exceptional.

"We won't be asking him to do too much other than that for us."

Nice way to keep expectations of him realistic.

JvR effectively replaces Max in our fwd line so we won't need Grundy for that role.  TMac is there to help Grundy ruck at CB and fwd 50.   And to be our marking target when exiting our d50.  It helps that if Ladhams is out, Sydney have no experienced ruckman.

We will miss Max's towering presence but reckon we have his role covered.

I hope you're right Luci. I want TMac to be the 2nd ruck, and JVR play as a KPF.

But I disagree that we have Max's role covered. Grundy isn't capable of dropping into defence and taking contested marks.

I'd be very surprised if jvr isn't the second ruck, with so.ething like a 30-70 split with Grundy.

Tmac is all at sea in centre square ruck contests.

And when in ruck he is taken away from the very important role he plays as a forward, in particular the up and down the ground running he does to create contest - a role jvr is not suited to, nor has the tank for.

7 disposals, 2 marks, 1 behind.

He’ll be a handy workhorse forward or a good key defender in a couple of years but he’s a still a fair way off.

Schache would’ve played if he didn’t manage to get himself concussed in a very Schache way.

Why play Tmac? unfortunately to slow the swans will run off his all day time to inject youth, we have a very good midfield but the problem is, most of them are one paced, Trac, Harmes, Viney even Sparrow are not quick players Clarry got some pace that is one reason we get caught out on the rebound, I understand the game plan is probably a work in progress and as the season goes on it might play out well.

As for JVR I hope they don't do one game in then out, let him go for a few games find his feet and go from there.

I'm not expecting a starring role but perhaps a bit more optimism is warranted.

This is a guy who averaged just over 2 goals a game for 16 games in the VFL last year, who's added a pre-season to that VFL year, and who opened this year's VFL season with 19 disposals, 11 marks and 1.1.

Many of the disposals and marks came in the ruck in junk time. Maybe Goody’s keeping his cards close to his chest but he didn’t mention JVR in the ruck. That will add a few more touches to my prediction

I don’t agree with you on the speed of Tracc, Viney and particularly Sparrow. All are plenty fast enough it’s just a matter of getting them in positions to run and use the ball and cover off defensively.

I was in favour of 1 key forward when we had peak Gawn, peak LJ, peak T Mc and they could all play big minutes and I could live with Fritsch being outmaked at times.

Nowadays we have Grundy who isn’t at 100% match fitness, JVR on debut and an ageing BBB who needs manageing.

We have to play Tommy or go with a medium marking target like Melk or Joel Smith.

If/when JVR settles in to afl level we can really consider a medium option, heck I’d even consider Smith this week. But it’s more like we give the kid a chance before we up the load he has to carry.

A handy workhorse?

A good key defender?

Makes you wonder whether Taylor confused him with another player when we took him at 19 in the draft.

Makes you wonder if Goody is also confused, given going by these comments he seems to think he is ready NOW:

“We’ve known for a while we've got an exciting prospect at our fingertips. But you've got to make sure with guys like Jake that they're ready to play. AFL footy is a challenging game,” Goodwin says.

“He's worked incredibly hard at VFL level to develop his game over the last two years.

“You need to be ready, as a 19-to-20-year-old coming into AFL footy as a power forward, you need your game in really good shape and we feel like we've been patient with him and got him to a point where it's time to unleash him.”

Just checking DS that YOU haven't confused JVR with another player?

I mean, i assumed the stats you posted (7 disposals, 2 marks, 1 behind) were from the round one VFL game. But that can't be the case given this article notes 'the 19th selection in the 2021 National Draft impressed in his first outing for the year, taking 11 marks and kicking a goal from 19 disposals in last Saturday’s VFL opener against the Bulldogs.'

I tend to agree with you. Despite having a restricted preseason, BBB looks like he's flying whereas TMAC looks cumbersome. But the coaches are set on a 2 ruck strategy. With this being the case, I'd rather see TMac bash and crash as a 2nd ruckman for 15% of the time, rather than JVR.

Grundy should play 85% gametime as the no.1 ruck, with no time resting up forward.

    MELBOURNE BUSINESS by The Oracle

In days of old, this week’s Thursday night AFL match up between the Demons and the Blues would be framed on the basis of the need to redress the fact that Carlton “stole” last year’s semi final away from Melbourne and with it, their hopes for the premiership.  A hot gospelling coach might point out to his charges that they were the better team on the night in all facets and that poor kicking for goal and a couple of lapses at the death cost them what was rightfully theirs. Moreover, now was

UNDER THE PUMP by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons have been left languishing near the bottom of the VFL table after suffering a 32-point defeat at the hands of stand alone club Williamstown at Casey Fields on Sunday. The Demons suffered a major setback before the game even started when AFL listed players Ben Brown, Marty Hore and Josh Schache were withdrawn from the selected side. Only Schache was confirmed as an injury replacement, the other two held over as possible injury replacements for Melbourne’s Thursday night fixt

THE MEANING OF FOOTY by Whispering Jack

Throughout history various philosophers have grappled with the meaning of life. Aristotle, Aquinas, Kant, Nietzsche, Schopenhauer and a multitude of authors of diverse religious texts all tried. As society became more complex, the question became attached to specific endeavours in life even including sporting pursuits where such questions arose among our game’s commentariat as, “what is the meaning of football”? Melbourne coach Simon Goodwin must be tired of dealing with such a dilemma but,

LEADERS OF THE PACK by The Oracle

I was asked to write a preview of this week’s Round 8 match between Melbourne and Geelong. The two clubs have a history that goes right back to the time when the game was starting to become an organised sport but it’s the present that makes the task of previewing this contest so interesting. Both clubs recently reached the pinnacle of the competition winning premiership flags in 2021 and 2022 respectively, but before the start of this season, many good judges felt their time had passed - n
