Never a better time than to start planning for 2023. The draw? Or the “biased coordinated schedule of events” is a better description.  We hopefully get a balanced schedule in 23.

Given the Dees finished 5th in 2022, I thought I’d go and check who finished 5th in 2021 and how we might get a similar draw - and who we could play twice.
So Lions finished 5th. Knocked out like the Dees in straight sets. Lions played Dees, Giants, Saints, Bombers & Suns twice.  That’s 1st, 7th,8th,10th,16th. So hypothetically Dees would play Cats, Tigers, Bulldogs, Saints and Giants twice. That’s ok.

Some thoughts for 2023 to start

1- special games: a) play home games v Tigers (Anzac day), b) v Pies (Kings birthday) , c) v Giants in the NT game.
2-  play Cats,  Blues, Bombers and Saints at the MCG. $$$$$$$s

3- play last round at home v Cats at the G.
4- interstate games x 6 -v Swans, v Giants, v Suns (during July school holidays) v Crows, v Eagles, v Freo.
5- play Lions and Power at the MCG.

HOME-  10 MCG games v Tigers, Pies, Cats, Blues, Saints, Bulldogs, Bombers, Lions, Power, Kangas. Plus NT game

Interstate games 6… plus “local” away games Hawks (MCG) Cats (GMHBA), Tigers (MCG), Bulldogs ( Marvel) , Saints(Marvel).

Anyway it’s really in the hands of the AFL team of actuaries and their marketing department!!!

Asked the AFL said we can have what's left after Geelong Collingwood Richmond Carlton Essendon and the interstate teams have had their wish list filled.

You can take it to the bank that we'll be playing in Geelong and we haven't played in Tasmania for a while so we'll probably get sent there too.

If we play Geelong at GMHBA and none of Essendon Richmond Carlton or Collingwood do, I'll....do nothing but be [censored] off.

Given our recent record at the MCG, maybe more interstate games would benefit.

Ignoring the above, I would prefer 11 home games at the MCG and to play the away games against every other tenant at the MCG.

Don't know how many games at home it comes to but it would make my MCC membership more attractive.

A mid-season break which is actually a mid-season break. Think this year we played Queens Birthday, but our next match was only 10 days later on a Thursday night.

A more even spread of home / MCG matches across the season would be good as well.  This year we went five weeks without a game at the MCG, which was ridiculous.

I will be happy if we for once don’t have to play Geelong in Geelong. Surely the AFL can give us one year off that trip in their fixture.

So the usual complains that we pray to not have are Geelong at their pub ground and west coast in Perth.

However, it is almost guaranteed we are gonna get the Cats twice and they wont both be at the G.

Even if we have a home game against West Coast it will probably end up being in Alice so it will be 9 years where we don't get them at the G.

My hopes are:

  • 2 games at Adelaide Oval - we play that ground better than any other and its one of, if not, the best interstate trip
  • Sydney at the SCG - Only played them there twice since 2013 and we need to learn how to beat them up there in case we get a final at the SCG (also last proper ground I haven't seen Melbourne play at)
  • 15 MCG/Marvel + plus 1 in Geelong rather than the 14, 1 and 7 interstate trips we normally have.
  • Breakdown on that being 3 MCG away games (13 in total) and 2 at Marvel.
  • More Saturday 2:10 games - did not have a single Saturday red ball game at the G this year (only Sunday 1:10 against the Saints).
  • QB/KB and Anzac Eve are our home games so hoping for double ups agianst the Pies and Tigers on Friday nights for exposure.
  • Not [censored] North in Hobart with a ten goal breeze but that is also wishful thinking.
  • Round 1 home game on a Saturday arvo against Essendon/Carlton/Hawthorn.

Why would they?

Bombers once since 1993

Pies this millennium

Tigers once this millennium

Blues... theyve actually been there 6 times this millennium.

Weve been there.... 18 times this millennium.

Rumours in Adelaide suggesting we will be playing Geelong at AO during Majic round.

As long as we dont play them at their dunghole I would take that.

I don't mind that if it is Geelong's Home game but I bet it will be ours!

Which means we may also end up playing them at Geelong🙄

don't be silly, that'll be our notional home game against them...

Don't really care about the who, very much care about the when. No Wednesday or Thursday night games, and a bare minimum of Friday and Saturday night home games please. I'd be happy if Anzac Eve was our only home night game for the year.

I reckon we will play Geelong, Giants, Carlton and Freo twice.

Throw Geelong in for a third time during Magic round, Otherwise Essendon as the home team so they can have the home game at the G.

Won't happen Poita Plenty of prime again to give Club ability to maximise its sponsors And how come you don't care !!! About The draw easy or hard.

Everything  on your terms so it seems nothing for the Dees!!!

After many years of just making numbers up we deserve the spoils of a top Club and games with tension and atmosphere of big crowds.

I’d do a deal with the devil just to not have to go to Geelong. Ever. EVER.

Surely we would want to play Freo twice to try and maximise holding their 1st and 2nd rd picks.

UP IN LIGHTS by Whispering Jack

Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
