Remember....as Ricky Bobby says in Talladega Nights..."If you ain't first, you're last!" Winning Premierships for the Melbourne Demons on the MCG is what really matters! 🏆🔴🔵 3 1 1 Quote

Deemania since 56 6,808 Posted September 14, 2022 Posted September 14, 2022 A brief but honest appraisal by Max expressing his thoughts and feelings about missing out on progressing further in the finals this year. I am glad at this point that he did not elaborate on any specific 'onfield' criticisms or other related issues. He appears to be set on righting the wrongs of the season as these affect Members and supporters, so that is a real positive; in particular, his leadership is going to be called upon to a massive degree and frequency in the next season - so musing on the what, why, how and applied methods will take a while - probably until the first bounce in 2023. We are in for an interesting 'off-season' of remediation and reset. Looking forward to the decisions about to be made. 3 Quote

The heart beats true 18,201 Posted September 14, 2022 Posted September 14, 2022 Doesn’t say much, which I suspect is a good thing. I hope in the long run the consistencies of our losses help to frame how we move forward. It’s an inescapable last half of the year for the footy department, so that’s a positive. There’s nowhere to hide from what happened, and how often it happened. 3 1 Quote

Gawndy the Great 9,011 Posted September 14, 2022 Posted September 14, 2022 Bad habits. I’d love to know what they think it is. Funny he mentioned Goody has to do some homework as well. Is that an admission of game plan failures? Im actually a bit disappointed that he is not as disappointed as I want him to be. 1 Quote

biggestred 5,311 Posted September 14, 2022 Posted September 14, 2022 (edited) Like, I'm pretty sure you're not hurting as much given that the only thing ive wanted most in my 40 years is to see a dees flag and then celebrate with my mates but nooo i get to watch it on tv and do a zoom call in my shed whilst staving off depression and you were nightclubbing in your full kit and now all it does is remind me of being locked down and depressed but hey whatever And then we finally get what weve always wanted in finals which is top 2 and playing interstate teams at the G and we go and pull that [censored] ffs. Sorry, still processing Edited September 14, 2022 by biggestred 7 1 1 1 Quote
BDA 23,048 Posted September 14, 2022 Posted September 14, 2022 I love Maxy. He's a champion. Super professional with a great tank. Burns pretty much every other ruck man in the league with his relentless gut running up and down the ground. And let's not forget this moment of magic from our skipper on our march to the flag last year 5 2 Quote

I think it's because you can genuinely sense the burn in Gawn. When it was happening in 2013 after a 140 point loss, it wasn't as genuinely poignant. 4 Quote
homsar 431 Posted September 14, 2022 Posted September 14, 2022 I choose to remember last year’s flag very fondly and will probably watch the replay for the 100th time after this season is done. It hurt to go out in straight sets, but the team tried. We were just off this year. I’m glad we have Max leading us out to go again next year. What a champion. 4 1 Quote

Our fitness program and the timing/balance of the training program will have to be a major consideration in the coming months. I don't think we lacked fitness per se but we ran out of puff at about round 11 when the injuries started. The graphs show how we hit the wall. Edited September 14, 2022 by Lucifers Hero 1 1 2 Quote
old dee 24,083 Posted September 14, 2022 Posted September 14, 2022 (edited) I don't believe a lack of desire was the reason we went out in straights sets. We lost because of too many injured players and a poor forward line set up with one KPF who was not at his best. Edited September 14, 2022 by old dee 10 Quote

Probably more reflection of the fact that you can't stand still, and maybe we did. Teams like Collingwood took on our style and outworked it. Remember the two starting players off the back of the square pre-666? You do need to develop changes each year or you're overtaken. There was not much innovation in us this year. We certainly stayed fixated on the same group as well. It's only a guess but I think the lack of new players, or relative novices like Bedford and Bowey being given a chance in the last third of the year cost us in terms of energy and enthusiasm. Goody possibly stuck with the known factors too much. If at the start of the year you'd told me Laurie would not have played a senior game this year, and that Chandler would not resurface I'd have figured long term injury hit them. But no, they just did not get a chance. 6 1 Quote
