Seeing Howe lose yet another close  final will sustain my heart  for many years to come.

I hopped off the bandwagon slowly in the second half of the season as we went 6 wins/8 losses! If you think our static, defensive second half 2022 game plan will cut it in 2023 with a set of injury free players you are mistaken. The best Teams are moving the ball at breakneck speed through the corridor (as we saw tonight)  and delivering it fast and low into their forward lines all to negate our strengths, May, Lever intercept marking and Gawn’s marking down the line. The game evolves so do we need to review how we play.

Swans so lucky. Their history of choking very nearly repeated

Big winner today was Geelong. Swans have to back up after a classic whereas the cats had a arm chair ride

These players were crucial to Collingwood's performance this year. It doesn't last forever.

Plus a bunch of youngsters playing way out of their skin... reminds me a little bit of us in 2018.

So satisfying to see Collingwood lose in that fashion. Even more so to see their fans sooking about the umpiring, when they won a handful of their games later in the season on the back of suspect umpiring and gifted goals (including against us).

Two things we need to do

Make full use of our home ground, and demand home games because we draw crowds.

Get some ex MFC person on the AFL. We need to screw as much info like rules, the draw and getting into umpires and media's favour as much as we can.

Fun fact: Thanks to the SCG expansions and upgrades over the last 25 years, there were nearly as many people there to see this 1 point win as there are were for Locketts point after the siren!

Well the Pies first half was fairly ordinary

Swans went off the boil after half time.  Cats slight favourites next week but there's not much between the 2 sides

Best 2 sides in the GF though

For us, a case of what could have been but we went with the same team and same game plan and it didn't work

However, it was worth a shot.  Just didn't work

Next year, I'm reckoning we'll see a number of new players, a new system and new approach

When you don't win you change things up ... it's a case of have to.  You don't get a choice

Within the club the ambition would be quite prevalent.  And the motivation

But I can't say I blame the FD for trying to repeat what had previously worked.  Other teams repeated (like Richmond) and it did work

Big difference this year is that teams are attacking through the corridor ... clubs aren't worried about turning the ball over and even if that happens, they back themselves to defend against the counter/turnover

Cats & Pies especially but the Swans as well when it suits.  And as we witnessed, that style took the Pies a long way

Down the line, working for a stoppage and then winning the stoppage is energy sapping.  Shelf life isn't forever

We could have done the same (corridor footy) but preferred chaos footy with a heavy accent on relying on forward line pressure once we entered the forward line (often with the long bomb)

Didn't work so you make it work by tweaking a few areas, or change things up

I'm looking forward to what we come up with next year.  We've got the base talent but we need to add some talent (especially in the forward line) and the game plan needs to be addressed

Reckon the Cats will romp it in.  Arm chair ride all right.  What a gift.

Whereas the Swans had a pretty hard fought final and tthey've probably lost Reid, who played a pretty big role in their form line this season.

Reminds me a bit of our win over the Blues in 88' and going in to the slaughter against the Hawks without Strawbs.

Doubt it will be that sort of route but the Cats couldn't have had a better entre' to a GF and should win comfortably (5 to 8 goals at least).

Big off season to get back up into the top echelon and challenge for a premiership. I don't care what anyone says about forward connection, goal kicking accuracy, missing tom McDonald, injuries to our key players or a very hard draw. We had 10-20 minutes less run in our legs than these 3 clubs when it came to the crunch. That's a huge enough discrepancy to need an off-season to get things right again both with fitness and with the game-plan. It would be salty/unsportsmanlike to think we were good enough to win it this year if not for x amount of factors going our way ie the Chris Scott sook. Time to let it go and move onto next year.

Hardly daylight. Expected scores had us six points down against Sydney and comfortably beating Brisbane. Plenty to work on (which you’ve covered well) but we aren’t far off.

Well I did mention goal kicking accuracy wasn't a valid excuse and I think the issue with expected scores is that it doesn't account for how an opposition 'respond' to you kicking a goal instead of a behind at any point - it just decides you should've kicked 3 goals instead of 0.

But anyway, fair enough - im still raw after seeing a team that beat us, lose by 70 to the Cats, and then being envious of a team being competitive and losing in a prelim! Probably exaggerates how far off we are.

I guess my point right now is that all these variables have to go well for us next year to be 'at the standard' of the other 3 teams - such was the intensity of pressure and quality of footy they've all played. The burden of proof is on us, not them next year. And that's not accounting for any natural improvement from our opponents also - We certainly are not fit anymore to call ourselves the best team in it if x y and z go right. And that's a pretty seismic shift from 4 months ago - And it will remain that way for exactly 1 year.  Everything in the regular season will have the shadow of our straight sets over it until we win a prelim - so its a long road ahead.

But it wasn't meant to be easy, and if we have the fight, spirit and make the necessary adjustments, then we will be back in it.

Probably have Freo on par with us. But we were no where near the top 3 sides. Even on a dry day Freos game plan made us look below average. These sides are all very well coached. We have the best list in the league. But we’ll need some rejigging of our game plan as this year we were exposed.
