For all those worried, the Queen's Birthday holiday is in honour of Queen Victoria and shall be unaffected.

I wouldn't be so sure about that. After a respectful period of time, there is likely to be fresh discussion about changing Australia's system of government from a constitutional monarchy to a republic. Whether that decision is made or not, as part of the debate, I wouldn't be at all surprised to see Queen's Birthday/King's Birthday taken from the calendar and replaced with another public holiday not necessarily on the second Monday in June. (I'm not proposing to argue for or against the concept of a republic in this thread as it's inappropriate and unnecessary at this time.)

The thought of weekly meetings with Liz Truss was the final straw.

Will be the King's Birthday game. Sad news. She was a great lady. Not many of them around these days.

There aren’t many great ladies around these days? What a strange thing to say.

Queen Victoria's birthday was May 24. That used to be British Empire Day.

I went to the Richmond v Fitzroy game which she attended in 1970. In those days football was only played on a Saturday supposedly because Sunday was still considered to be a day of rest. I found it ironic, therefore, that the game was played on a Sunday to accommodate the Queen, given she was also the Head of the Church of England.

I can still remember the photo of the Royal Family at the game with Ross Dillon sitting with them. In those days, that was considered to be a highlight for Melbourne supporters. There was nothing much happening on field to get excited about, other than Collingwood losing Grand Finals with regularity.

I'm expecting an announcement shortly of a new training facility down at the Cattery.

That's Ross Dillon sitting between Prince Phillip and Princess Anne. The other footballers in the photo are Ross Smith on the Queen's RHS and John Shultz on her left.

Charles a Geelong fan after Timbertop?

What an unusual life she lived. So much authority, but almost no agency over her own life. Go here, do this, smile, wave, don’t offend.

Famously the royal family policy is ‘don’t complain, don’t explain’. If we implemented that policy around here Demonland would be out of business in 2 days.

A wonderful, selfless woman, who devoted her life to the service of her people and country.

RIP your Majesty, you will be greatly missed.

Lets keep things in perspective.  She inherited the job, had bucketloads of money she never worked for & lived a privileged life of luxury most of us can only dream of.

I was over there when Diana died and had tickets for an Old Firm game that was cancelled. Not impressed. Cancel the croquet and fox hunting if they want. In the 21st century there is no place for taxpayers to subsidise one family (who ironically aren't even English) and their hangers on in such an opulent lifestyle (£4 million to renovate her grandson's 2 bedroom flat??). What I find more bizarre however is the public fawning at the smallest thing they do and the adulation at her handing out medals each year in the name of an empire that caused so much misery and suffering to so many people.

The queen is a distant (unofficial) cousin of mine. Edward the 7th my great great grandfather who indulged in hanky panky with my servant girl great great grandmother when he was a young man studying in Italy for a couple years in the 1850’s. At least our branch escaped the inbreeding. Not a fan of royalty but she was a noble and decent woman.

I think "don't complain, don't explain" was also used by Leigh Matthews as coach and, I suspect, his mentor, Alan Jeans.

They had a 40-minute half-time interval where the players had to change their jumpers, wash their hands and comb their hair before meeting her.

In regard to the Queen's birthday holiday, Queen Elizabeth's actual birthday was on April 21. However, Britain has a birthday celebration for the monarch in June with a parade that also marks the beginning of summer. That traditional date just transferred over to Australia, even if it's not summer!

Rough luck with the Old Firm game.

Already seen lots of people complaining about premier league games being cancelled but still having to go to work aha.

  • REPORT: North Melbourne

It’s late February. Two teams widely predicted to finish near the foot of the AFL table in 2026 face off against each other in sweltering 30-degree heat deep in outer suburbia in a match simulation with fresh new faces and uneven team numbers. There are no nearby sheep stations on offer; the result promises nothing more than bragging rights for the winner. Nevertheless, the loser appears hopelessly adrift, whereas the other seems to have found its footing after a couple of years of struggle – perhaps a hint at bigger things to come?
