Great news. Certainly close to AFL selection and even if he doesn't get a game this year a full VFL season under his belt including finals experience is just as beneficial.

Great focus for development:

"I try not to focus on how I'm going to fit into the team or whose spot I'm going to take because I feel like if I do, it will negatively impact my performance and I'll start worrying about the wrong things. The conversations I've had with 'Goody' (coach Simon Goodwin) have been around becoming the best player I can be and when I do get my chance, I can come into the team I'll stay there and won't just be there for two weeks and get dropped.

"I'm just focusing on the process of what makes me a good player and becoming a really good player and if that takes a bit longer than other people I'm more than happy with that, I'll just keep working as hard as I can."

Well done for another two years!

Had a pretty tough run with injuries last year and covod screwing up the vfl so it's great to see him developing nicely this year.

I’m very happy with the extension.  He’s missed so much footy that it seems like he’s just starting out, and with the attitude described above, he’ll get the very best out of himself, which if reports are correct, is a lot.

I've read of that advice by Goody from a few players.

It reminds me of an interview Cam Pedesen did a few years ago.  He became very fit in the preseason after being told that he has to be ready if needed.  Sure enough he was needed when Spencer and Gawn were both out for quite a while.  It was Cam's best season of his career.

Opportunities open up all the time.  The great thing is the players see that the coaches 'walk the talk' with selections.

He suffered injuries and then Covid stuffed the VFL season so a large part of his first season was missed. By all reports he’s going well and has been emergency a lot this year so he’s close to cracking a senior game.

I was pleased when we drafted him as he looked like he had the skills to be an effective half forward type. Like Bowza, he’s got good kicking and decision making skills, paired with good agility and decent pace. He seems to have the right attitude based on that interview too so good luck to him cracking a game soon and being in red and blue for years to come.

The Football Department must rate him to offer him the contract, so clearly it must be good news.

I'm very please he's got two more years, he's clearly got some attributes but he certainly has a lot of areas to improve.  To say he's close to AFL selection when he wasn't selected with about 5 players out is a stretch.  In my view he's got a long way to go and his selection as emergency is to show him what it's like to prepare for an AFL game.

What a great mindset. Can’t help but think of DNA and Mark Williams as the inspiration for that mindset.

It’s probably easier to have that mindset when you can look at guys like Sparrow and JJ who took a couple of seasons to break into the first team.

Footy club will let him develop and get some further experience.  His footy skills, goalkicking and smarts are his strengths.  Intensity and AFL quality pace are to be developed.  Fits probably along the half forward / Spargo type position at the moment.

Whilst many people talk about our "premiership window" developing young players for the future is the surest way to prolong the so called window. Goody on the club.

I've likened him to Greg Williams - yes he has a long way to go to reach those heights but obviously the club have faith he can make it

IMO he has lots of work ahead to get fitter and get to more contests so he can accumulate more possessions because when he gets it he does tend to use it very well (a bit like Charlie Spargo)

I have a feeling he might be that rare breed of footballer that plays better when at the highest level - only time will tell but hope I'm right

That’s a great point. JJ in particular suffered a fair few set backs. It doesn’t matter how you get there, just that you are ready when you do. Pick 22 in the draft suggests he’s got what it takes.

Caught up with my mate who’s the Principle of Caulfield Grammar only a couple of weeks ago

He still states Laurie will be a 100 plus game player.

Yes definitely Greg Williams - lots of 40 possession games, deadly accuracy by hand & foot & a touch of mongrel 🤣🤣

I can't think of a player he reminds me less of.

I wish him well but haven’t seen anything more than B minus in his efforts at Casey.

UP IN LIGHTS by Whispering Jack

Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
