We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

Pick 17 on a player who has been in the system already and has shown he could make it vs who knows what from the draft… to me you’d think a lot harder than just “nnnoooo” if you were in the footy club.

Wow.. just.. WOW!!! Bobby Hill for a first Rnd pick hahahahaha YIKES

I think he’s got massive upside and would gladly bring him in.
He’s a quick, agile, mercurial forward and doesn’t compare to Chandler.  If anything, Chandler is being kept out of the team by ANB and Spargo.
Hill is more akin to Pickett, and two such players in the team allows them to hunt further up the ground and rotate through the midfield.

By the time it comes up, our first pick would be around 20, which wouldn’t be too far off the mark for him.

Hill’s just another of these players who comes into the system promising so much and delivering so little. He has these spasmodic flashes of brilliance from time to time but lets you down so often. No thanks!

I find this comment strange.

Hes 21 years old who was from the same draft as Tom Sparrow and James Jordon. He's played 30 games which is more then Jordon and Sparrow as well. He was also a pick 24, so wasn't like he was a top 10 pick who some expect to come in and make an immediate impact.

This year alone he played 17 games and kicked 15 goals. That's just under a goal a game. For a young small forward that's not too bad, especially playing one of the hardest positions on the ground.

Amazing how quickly some are to write young players off immediately.

Has ample amount of development left in his game.

Strange that someone should have an opinion that he’s inconsistent?

He’s been a low possession winner throughout his career. Kicks the odd goal in a game and then is unsighted. Got 6 touches v Geelong when given his chance in the semi final. The game he played before that (round 17) he had 7 touches.

With a record like that, he certainly has a lot of development left in his game but it won’t necessarily be fulfilled so I wouldn’t be worried too much if we missed out on it.

Spargo had single figure disposals 8 times this year and only averaged 2 more touches per game than Hill.

Pickett had single figures 7 times, including 4 in the grand final and averaged 3 more touches than Hill.

Given our superior team, midfield dominance and key forwards crashing packs I don’t think our little fellas would’ve averaged any more touches playing for the Giants than Hill did.

Small forward has quiet patches and doesn’t play well in a final doesn’t mean they deliver little or are letting you down. That’s the nature of the position.

Hill isn’t on Pickett’s level but he’s tracking similarly to Spargo and could very well establish himself as an AFL player in year 4 as Spargo did. It’s also important to note he wasn’t dropped this year, he simply left the hub to be with his partner

Smalls forwards aren't big possession winners.. you do realise that right?

I mean sure If you're going off low possession count then how do you judge the likes of Spargo and Pickett who at times have had low possession games this year?

And just FYI I'm not saying we should chase him as we're pretty well stocked and have limited space on our list. Just think we're quick to write off young players so quickly. Spargo and Nibbler are perfect examples of this.

I haven’t seen enough of Hill but in respect to the stats of Pickett and Spargo, they’re superior to those of Hill, although not by much. The difference is that Pickett is kicking more goals and Spargo, about the same as Hill but also, the pressure they both bring to their games and their overall roles in the side are significant. They do have the advantage of being in the Melbourne system with it’s great midfield pumping the ball down, of course.

Hill would appear to be more advanced than Kade Chandler but the club and the player have made their decisions so we move on.

Hill’s future appears to be an issue that’s out of Melbourne’s control but let’s get some popcorn and enjoy what transpires with his proposed move to Essendon.

If he goes to Essendon, he’ll be called “Windy”.

GWS seem prepared to let Hill go if they get a small forward back, specifically Chad Wingard.  He won't go there  They were prepared to give Hawthorn pick #13 for Wingard if Hawks paid some of his salary.

So what happens next?

Essendon offered 2 picks between 50 - 60 or in a pinch their future 2nd round pick 30+).  Collingwood have put their hat in the ring but they they may not the trade currency to get a deal done.  But HIll wants to go to Essendon.  Makes one wonder about his true motives for coming to Vic if he won't consider other clubs.  He said he wants to play in the Dreamtime game and ANZAC Day game...

From what I'm reading I don't think Hill's attitude is a good fit for us (but that could be worked on) so not canvassing for him.  But I do think it is a shame that one of our small forwards:  Bedford, Chandler, Smith could not form a trade with GWS having just extended their contracts.  It wouldn't be pick #13 as Lobb staying means they wouldn't need to offload Wingard's salary but a three club deal could have been done.

While being contracted doesn't make our players untradeable it would be very strange for that to happen now.  We aren't that sort of club.   Perhaps we extended their contracts a bit early as the trade period was still open.  We have a lot of, a surplus even, of depth in the small forward department.

Every chance Hill stays at GWS.  Or if Wingard is prepared to go to another Vic club a deal might get done.

Interestingly Hill contacted Essendon first, not the other way around, and thus I doubt Essendon will pay a kings ransom for him.

He does fill a hole on our list but his output so far has been underwhelming. I think he has upside, but it's very hard to judge a kid like Hill who is coming off 2 covid effected seasons.

Apparently we have offered a future 2nd but want a little something coming back. Even a late future 3rd or 4th pick will helps us, as we may well have both Davey twins to bid for next season under F/S

As it sits right now at 1.26pm on Weds, I think he stays at GWS. If he chose any other club in Vic, he gets there, but McCartneys pettiness towards Dodoro and Essendon will see no trade happen.

Which is a shame for Bobby Hill and his pregnant partner, who really want to be in Victoria.

You're a weird cat Ash, a Bombers fan posting on a Demons site...

Had to google about Davey's twins, then realised you weren't talking about Aaron's kids, but Alwins..

What happened, did they kick you off the Bomber forum for talking about the Demons too much?

Ash, hope you are well, long time no speak.

As to the bit I quoted, who do you think is responsible for McCartney's attitude towards Dodoro and Essendon?

From what I've heard either Hill or his manager Colin Young have been a little disingenuous about this.

Hill was/is best mates with Finlayson who has left for Port,  Hill/Young apparently didn't make GWS aware of his desire to leave until after the GF which is almost a month after GWS' season ended.  There's a bit of speculation from the Giants end that the whole family support angle is also a bit of a ruse.

He's after more years (four) on better money - good luck to him if he can get it.

Long history between the 2, going back to the days McCartney was at the Bulldogs. He probably got the ball rolling when he apparently walked into the room, offered pick 38 for Stewart Crameri, and walked out. Crameri at the time has won our Goalkicking the previous 2 seasons and was in our top 12 players. We got him to give us pick 26 which we used to draft Zach Merrett, so they probably didn't amuse him.

Essendon probably did well out of the Stringer trade, but the Bulldogs were kicking him out the door, so we were hardly going to pay a kings ransom

We paid overs for Shiel with 2 1st Rounders, so I doubt he is angry at us for that

I know McCartney wasn't happy about us getting Caldwell last year for a couple of 2nd rounders, but over the journey, I reckon McCartney has "won" more often than Dodoro in trades between the 2.

Maybe he is just sick of losing players to us

I read the Essendon fan pages, but don't post much. I find most of them all a bit unreasonable at times

Demonland has always been of a high standard of footy knowledge and have enjoyed many a discussion over the years here. having a couple of daughters who are mad Dees fans also means I have a close eye on Melbourne

LEADERS OF THE PACK by The Oracle

I was asked to write a preview of this week’s Round 8 match between Melbourne and Geelong. The two clubs have a history that goes right back to the time when the game was starting to become an organised sport but it’s the present that makes the task of previewing this contest so interesting. Both clubs recently reached the pinnacle of the competition winning premiership flags in 2021 and 2022 respectively, but before the start of this season, many good judges felt their time had passed - n

Two weeks ago, when the curtain came down on Melbourne’s game against the Brisbane Lions, the team trudged off the MCG looking tired and despondent at the end of a tough run of games played in quick succession. In the days that followed, the fans wanted answers about their team’s lamentable performance that night and foremost among their concerns was whether the loss was a one off result of fatigue or was it due to other factor(s) of far greater consequence.  As it turns out, the answer to

The afternoon atmosphere at the Swinburne Centre was somewhat surreal as the game between Richmond VFL and the Casey Demons unfolded on what was really a normal work day for most Melburnians.
