Absolute woeful decision. 

Another GREAT ump decision was when Tmac went to tackle a port player and the port player slipped and Tmac tried to avoid the high contact but the ump paid the free against us because of high contact. Tmac literally kissed the ports player shoulder basically, it was nothing serious.

Then later in the game a Melb player slipped and got high contact from a Port player and was given NOTHING.

God its annoying the umps are so inconsistent (and generally doesnt go our way either).

Are you talking about that handball over the top to Trac in the goal square?

If not, that was another great example of top notch disposal to setup a player.  Jimmy made it look easy, but I think it would have actually be quite a difficult hand pass to execute under pressure.  I think it may well have been beyond some other lesser players in the past and we would have missed the target with Trac and he either fumbles the ball over the line or ends up getting tackled and we don't get the goal.

I’ve been watching a lot of football for many years and I actually think we saw something beautiful and almost spiritual last night

 

At the beginning and to  the middle of the game the Port Adelaide supporters were acting like almost feral Subhumans  - as if they were talking their cues from Peter Weir in one of the Lord of the Rings films.

(of course it goes without saying that I am not and would never be suggesting that they are subhuman - merely that they were acting as if they were - no doubt with the motive of inspiring their hitherto adored local team)

but it could be seen that as the night went on they began to calm down a little

and become more reflective   -  quieter -  

and I really feel that by the end of the night they seemed to have  learned a deep lesson : to appreciate what is like to behold a truly wondrous team triumphing over their lesser  one and to appreciate the fact and the beauty of it 

 

The Australian nation could well be spiritually richer because of that game last night

There is no way at the start of the year I had him as a permanent contributor (*workman like role player) within a premiership contender.

Well bloody done to him and his perseverance.

 

If I thought Hunt would be a regular contributor to the team this year, it was as a quick forward (speed forwards in the new MFC lingo).  That he has been able to adjust his game to playing back in defense where alot of people thought he had deficiencies and he hadn't played much for a few years, is a real credit to him.

Would be great if he could up his game that little bit and kick us a few extra goals every now and there off a back flank.  He had a fair crack at one from outside 50 on the boundary last night and nearly bought it home.  He's really quite a good kick for goal, so I think providing a few goals here and there ought to be well within his capability.

Would also be nice to see Goodwin shuffle the magnets every once in a while, when we are struggling to kick goals and throw a guy like Hunt or May forward to see if they can kick a few breakthrough goals, but I feel that our philosophy this year is more about prioritising  predictability within the team and the players as individuals, so I'm not sure it's that likely to happen right now.  It could be something which happens more frequently when the team has imbbeded the confidence/belief, knowledge of how each other plays to a really mature level, like what happened with the really good Hawthorn, Geelong and Richmond teams over the past few years.  I think this actually represents another level our game could go to.

Hibbo is criminally underrated. Has had a superb year shutting down some of the best players in the competition.

A strong off season priority to find a replacement for him, as he is no spring chicken.

Having watched the replay in snippets today (4th quarter first, then back through the 1st and now in the 2nd), Jordon played wing in the 1st and 4th, but so far in the 2nd, Harmes has played wing the whole quarter. It's not something I noticed either. I'll be interested to watch again what we did in the third.

Brisbane's game was moved from the Gabba to Metricon, which helps St Kilda.

Geelong often drop a rubbish game, although they already did in Round 1 to Adelaide.

Still, I can see arguments for any of these three sides to pull of an upset.

Any help us, but St Kilda helps us most - get Brisbane the [censored] away from top 2, please.

Just watched the replay with a couple of reds, funny the things you notice when the pressure of the  game live is off. I am amazed we won by 5 goals again.

Picture this, Port surging back into the game, the home crowd roar becomes louder, the Dees player playing a bit more nervy, the umpires buying into the home crowd rants and raves, the game on the line in the 3rd quarter. Mcdonald goals! The pressure is alleviated and the bleeding stopped. A few minutes later, Mcdonald kicks another goal! Pressure starts going back on Port, Mcdonald's confidence through the roof.  Next minute, Mcdonald sent to the bench. 

This is the most stupid coaching call of the night. I love how coaches try and be on the cutting edge of sport science with their rotations. How about sorting out our goal kicking inefficiency before getting fancy and keeping our good players on when they start lighting it up.

It wasn't that one, though you're right thst was a good example of his smarts.

The one I was thinking of was around the wing. I'm.about to watch the replay and will make a note of when it happened

I noticed that TMac was disappointed when notified he had to head to the bench also. 

I am sure for some players that get comfortable/complacent after a goal it could make sense to take them off......But a confidence player like TMac should be just told to carry on!

Memory just recalls Smith as a ripper CHB against some astounding opponents - one of the few 'reliables' in those days for the Dees, in an era when things went any way but satisfactorily. I'd reckon Hardeman's record would exceed and dim that of Smith and the two were not too far apart in terms of playing timeframe. Could be wrong, so your clarity is encouraging, RN.
