He's been fantastic the last 2 weeks. Should have been All Australian last year. Surely it's his turn this year to get All Australian. What are his odds for the brownlow? never plays a bad game I might put a 10 dollar note on it.

As good as he is, I don’t think so. But it would at least be some recognition  if he made all Australian. Tbh I can’t remember us ever having such a dominant key back. Biffen, Hardemam, Icke, Lyon are a few from my time watching, but none looked as utterly impenetrable as May does now.

Only midfielders get a look in for the Brownlow. Might poll a few votes but that's it. I wonder if the umps gave him any votes this weekend?

He'll make the AA team if he continues this form for sure.

His ability to take contested marks even when he appears to be out of position is remarkable.

His kicking to position is excellent. Watch how he finds a target and how often he delivers to the spot.

Very rarely beaten one out at ground level.

Good pick up.

PS No hope for Brownlow because history tells us that only one fullback (Fred Goldsmith, South Melbourne) has ever won. Although based on Saturday's form there must eventually be a Brownlow winner who dominates through his ability to win one on one contests and does not just accumulate possessions.

Don't even bother.  It's called the mid fielder's medal for good reason.  Farcical award now.

Making your regular 22, AA and possibly top two or three in the Bluey is about as good as he'll get i reckon.

He has absolutely no chance whatsoever.

Rance was the premier backman in the AFL for years and only polled 31 brownlow votes total.

As much chance as us going 22-0, which is probably what it would take for him to poll 25-30. But then Petracca would end up with 40!

SO YOU'RE SAYING THERE'S A CHANCE ...

Simple quiz: is full back a kind of midfielder? If yes, then a full back can win the Brownlow. If no, then a full back can't. Sorry, Steven!

Hard to get recognition from the media let alone the umps!

Notice The Age couldn't fit either May or Lever in their votes. Oliver, Fyffe, Petracca, Brayshaw (Freo) and TMac featured though.

Can a fullback win the Brownlow?

can a blue man sing the whites?

May took a mark in front of me on the HFF in the first 1/4.

With Lever talking the back half by himself as cover.

Another question could be:  " Who are the AFL's best defensive duo?"

Lever/May wins by a street

astbury / grimes are three premierships ahead...

hopefully may / lever can match that in about three seasons' time!

In the votes given in The Age neither May or Lever received votes. Unbelievable.

That's a joke right.

These people are paid to report on a football match and to not put the two most influential players on the ground is bizzare.

Whoever gave those votes has gone off the stats sheet and clearly didn’t watch the game. Tbf, that’s basically how Brownlow votes tend to go as well, so to answer the thread title, of course not.

The whole AA selection panel should have been fired.  Didnt even have May in the squad of 40...  so pathetic.  Hes the best backman in  the entire [censored] country.

They had a couple of Tigers in the AA backline whos degree of difficulty playing in that Richmond defense is a 1 compared to about  a 9 for Steven May.

Yeah, I think that's the same report that referred to Matt Taberner as Matt Tavernor. I'm not sure the journo even has a passing interest in the game.

I thought Neita was a better CHB than a forward Wellsy . . . and that's saying something. I seem to remember Carey saying Neita was his most difficult opponent. Just my opinion FWIW. But outside of Neita, May is the best big bodied backman we've had in my 50 years watching the Deez.

I often wonder why KPD's don't poll votes to any sort of degree in the Brownlow

Hardeman was a great player who came 2nd in a Brownlow once but never finished higher than 3rd in the B&F

Steven May might poll well though as he really does stand out in a dominant way.  But no chance of winning if we go on history

Backmen don't figure in the media awards either and it's possibly the same with B&F's (so it's not just the umpires who fail to recognise)

Matt Scarlett was an astonishingly great player but did he ever figure in any awards? (of any description) Other greats such as Dench & Southby and others were often ignored with the votes

The positive is that we haven't been able to have this sort of conversation very often with regards to one of our own players

KPP players mostly struggle at the Brownlow, he got a perfect 10 from the coaches but I can see the umpires giving the 3 votes to Oliver, Petracca, Cerra, and (Freo's) Brayshaw.

Interestingly something that May himself highlighted when speaking about AA defenders is that they have to do more than spoil the ball away, the modern defender has to take marks and be able to rebound. It's something he worked on over the summer, round one in and he's succeeding. If there was a rolling AA he would have to be starting FB.

Demonland Trackwatchers braved the sweltering heat to bring you their Preseason Training observations from Gosch's Paddock on Monday morning. SCOOP JUNIOR'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS I went down today in what were pretty ordinary conditions - hot and windy. When I got there, they were doing repeat simulations of a stoppage on the wing and then moving the ball inside 50. There seemed to be an emphasis on handballing out of the stoppage, usually there were 3 or 4 handballs to

BEST OF THE REST by Meggs

Meggs' Review of Melbourne's AFLW Season 9 ... Congratulations first off to the North Melbourne Kangaroos on winning the 2024 AFLW Premiership. Roos Coach Darren Crocker has assembled a team chock-full of competitive and highly skilful players who outclassed the Brisbane Lions in the Grand Final to remain undefeated throughout Season 9. A huge achievement in what was a dominant season by North. For Melbourne fans, the season was unfortunately one of frustration and disappointment
