Melbourne - premiership contenders?

I am still very positive and feel that we have a real chance at top 4, it is up to the coaches and players to share belief and resolve, things can turn around real quick if you believe.

the article was conceptually very good identifying basically where our weaknesses are, but made the huge assumption these problems are now fixed with the 3 draftees we brought in, injecting pace and precise kicking. We are a longggg way off any of them becoming regular players.

he's right if those players and Ben Brown fire then we wouldn't have too many glaring weaknesses. and if your Aunty had...

I think the list is the best since 1998, the players like Jackson, Rivers and Pickett must step up and improve and BB needs to be on the park soon.

As for winning a premiership lots can happen between now and September, we need our list to be relatively injury free and have at least 16 of our top players who play nearly every round and the finals.

Premiership teams always depend on the core players and the bottom 6 must at least be competitive and make a contribution to the success of the team.

listened to the footyology podcast this week; neither rohan connolly nor mark fine thought we were a chance of finals, let alone premiership contenders

mark fine is a saints nuffy tho, and his views are almost universally terrible - but he's right that we've been consistency mediocre for a long time

But both of them are jaded self employed sad sacks.

Didn't mind connnolly on SEN, but his twitter presence is too much!

Just listening to this now and I think they've undersold us a bit but I get it, if you bet on us to miss finals each year for the last 56 years you'd have made a decent quid.

RoCo is unhinged. Unstable at best. Viney has a red switch. Those two will end up in a punch on with each other one day.

If Jackson, Pickett and Rivers progress and Brown plays and the rest show a bit we are a real chance. We just ned to play smarter and not bomb the ball but lower the eyes.

We have been building the list since Paul Roos took over  in 2014 -16  and Goody  from 2017  - current.

IMV l see it as the strongest list that has been put together since the early 60s yes l was around.56 years ago .

We are in it to win it,  We are in that so called window,

I must agree we set ourselves a team and style to grind over teams with a battering ram, high endurance style in 2020. That was taken away from us with shortened quarters and even still only our own mental fragility in Cairns has us miss the finals by a slender margin. Assuming a good run with injuries and the natural development of the list and the connection between them with game style it is not an unreasonable call.

Doubt there has been a premiership team in history where there's been noise that players 'want success or they'll leave'. Never heard that from players at Haw, Coll, WCE, Syd, etc. even during lean periods.

Until we get the right mix of players who take responsibility for the success of this club we're not winning anything. We are way off with this group.

And how many have openly stated that on our list?

Rufus name all the names please.

Made a $1000 bet 9 years ago that we’d win a flag within a decade. Last year of the bet this season. Hope this article is correct.

That would have been made as 186 happened and Neeld was put in place; you would have got some good odds...

What a great way to spend $1000.

Not sure you can quote that line anymore     In this enlightened day and age.

K nuts,    She might really be your Uncle.

but I definitely understand where you are coming from. Hope those players do fire up.

I will not be holding my breath until we get into the finals, then,      then I might start hyper ventilating,   A long way to go I think.

Good luck to us all.

As Melbourne supporters we are all jaded!!

Since 2006 I have known we have not had the cattle. Every win was a great day, any final was an outperformance.  But this is no longer my thoughts.  I believe we have the best list we have had since the mid 90s.  We have the combination of experience and raw talent required to win a premiership. The core of our group are peaking.

We no longer have excuses.

Only poor player management, bad coaching or extraordinary bad luck (of non soft tissue injuries) will see us outside of the top four.

We should expect top 4. Anything less is a failure.

    GETAWAY by Meggs

Calling all fit players. Expect every available Melbourne player to board the Virgin cross-continent flight to Perth for this Round 4 clash on Saturday afternoon at Fremantle Oval. It promises to be keenly contested, though Fremantle is the bookies clear favourite.  If we lose, finals could be remoter than Rottnest Island especially following on from the Dees 50-point dismantlement by North Melbourne last Sunday.  There are 8 remaining matches, over the next 7 weeks.  To Meggs’

    DRUBBING by Meggs

With Casey Fields basking in sunshine, an enthusiastic throng of young Demons fans formed a guard of honour for the evergreen and much admired 75-gamer Paxy Paxman. As the home team ran out to play, Paxy’s banner promised that the Demons would bounce back from last week’s loss to Brisbane and reign supreme.   Disappointingly, the Kangaroos dominated the match to win by 50 points, but our Paxy certainly did her bit.  She was clearly our best player, sweeping well in defence.

    GARNER STRENGTH by Meggs

In keeping with our tough draw theme, Week 3 sees Melbourne take on flag favourites, North Melbourne, at Casey Fields this Sunday at 1:05pm.  The weather forecast looks dry, a coolish 14 degrees and will be characteristically gusty.  Remember when Casey Fields was considered our fortress?  The Demons have lost two of their past three matches at the Field of Dreams, so opposition teams commute down the Princes Highway with more optimism these days.  The Dees held the highe

    ALLY’S FIELDS by Meggs

It was a sunny morning at Casey Fields, as Demon supporters young and old formed a guard of honour for fan favourite and 50-gamer Alyssa Bannan.  Banno’s banner stated the speedster was the ‘fastest 50 games’ by an AFLW player ever.   For Dees supporters, today was not our day and unfortunately not for Banno either. A couple of opportunities emerged for our number 6 but alas there was no sizzle.   Brisbane atoned for last week’s record loss to North Melbourne, comprehensively out

    GOOD MORNING by Meggs

If you are driving or training it to Cranbourne on Saturday, don’t forget to set your alarm clock. The Melbourne Demons play the reigning premiers Brisbane Lions at Casey Fields this Saturday, with the bounce of the ball at 11:05am.  Yes, that’s AM.   The AFLW fixture shows deference to the AFL men’s finals games.  So, for the men it’s good afternoon and good evening and for the women it’s good morning.     The Lions were wounded last week by 44 points, their highest ever los

    HORE ON FIRE by Meggs

The 40,000 seat $319 million redeveloped Kardinia Park Stadium was nowhere near capacity last night but the strong, noisy contingent of Melbourne supporters led by the DeeArmy journeyed to Geelong to witness a high-quality battle between two of the best teams in AFLW.   The Cats entered the arena to the blasting sounds of Zombie Nation and made a hot start kicking the first 2 goals. They brought tremendous forward half pressure, and our newly renovated defensive unit looked shaky.

    REMATCH by Meggs

The Mighty Demons take on the confident Cats this Saturday night at the recently completed $319 million redeveloped GMHBA Stadium, with the bounce of the ball at 7:15pm. Our last game of 2023 was an agonisingly close 5-point semi-final loss to Geelong, and we look forward to Melbourne turning the tables this week. Practice match form was scratchy for both teams with the Demons losing practice matches to Carlton and Port Adelaide, while the Cats beat Collingwood but then lost to Essendo

    WELCOME 2024 by Meggs

It’s been hard to miss the seismic global momentum happening in Women’s sport of late. The Matildas have been playing to record sell-out crowds across Australia and ‘Mary Fowler is God’ is chalked onto footpaths everywhere. WNBA basketball rookie sensation Caitlin Clark has almost single-handedly elevated her Indiana Fever team to unprecedented viewership, attendances and playoffs in the USA.   Our female Aussie Paris 2024 Olympians won 13 out of Australia’s all-time record 18 gol

    EPILOGUE by Whispering Jack

I sit huddled in near darkness, the only light coming through flickering embers in a damp fireplace, the room in total silence after the thunderstorm died. I wonder if they bothered to restart the game.  No point really. It was over before it started. The team’s five star generals in defence and midfield ruled out of the fray, a few others missing in action against superior enemy firepower and too few left to fly the flag for the field marshal defiantly leading his outnumbered army int
