Did we get an assessment by a knee specialist before we recruited him?
if not, why not given his history in 2020?
If so was it Big Feller, or some other fella (or, in the current PC world, shelia or in between)?

My understanding was the Burgess was heavily involved in the medical evaluation of him before we recruited him (and in fact Burgess was a big reason for why he chose us in the end).

I think to call this an injury is probably an incorrect terminology because I'd say it's more a persistent issue that will be with him for the rest of his life and he has to be managed. It's not good news, the way the club has worded things is without the usual puff of "we expect him to be back in training shortly" so without much more information I think his management will need to be reassessed.

Fingers crossed though.

The list looks in great condition, that's Burgo's job. Managing injuries is mostly up to the doctors and physios. We've been better under Burgo at getting guys in to see the surgeons and being proactive rather than the old process where we've stuffed around for months before fixing a problem.

Why? They've stuffed around with Brown having fluid on his knee for months and then decided in February to have the surgeon take a look at it. He'll have a scope and miss 4 weeks then they'll rush him back for the start of the season underdone

Jay Lockhart's spent the better part of 2 years with huge tape over one or both knees and has over looked hobbled.

Obviously half the side were in the same boat for the start of 2019.

If it takes half a roll of tape to get you through a January training session then something isn't right.

As soon as BB's name came up vision came to me of Templeton, Mitch C, and all the other duds we've recruited. The Roos didn't seem to have qualms about him walking. Oi WEh, is all I can say, Oi Weh.

SACK BURGO I'M SICK OF THESE INJURIES VINEY NOW BROWN. CAN'T WE HAVE AN INJURY FREE RUN FOR ONCE? GIVE US A FITNESS GURU THAT DOESN'T INJURE OUR PLAYERS FOR ONCE. I'VE HAD ENOUGH SEASON OVER.

Is swelling an injury? Just sounds like Dr Feller will be working out how to manage it best.

That's how I read it!

Does not stop the usual festival of crying at even the slightest hint of a setback.

As with Hawthorn taking Scully & Patton from GWS on seemingly favourable deals, the eagerness of NM to be done with Brown should have been a warning sign for Melbourne.

But yet again we were so desperate to add talent from other clubs, instead of developing our own, that we rushed in to sign Brown with $3M worth of contract.

Thankfully we had talked McDonald's value down so far that there were no takers, otherwise we would be looking at starting another season with Weideman as our only true key position forward.

I have it from a current AFL coach that recruiting Brown was a mistake, and that given current trends in tactic, we'd be better off without him.

And, no, I'm not going to reveal the sauce. I've already rounded it down to 18 people out of 25 million.

Actually you have narrowed it to 17, even better.

I think we have proven we are not competitive with T-Mac, Weid and Fritsch as our forward line. We are terrible at developing players historically and quite frankly, our list was not exactly overflowing with key position talent. Ben Brown is far less of a risk than Joe Daniher is to Brisbane.

It's not ideal but better they get it right the first time than have constant issues.

If we need to run with a forward line of Weid, Jacko and Tmac to start then so be it.

No. Not like Tom Lynch. He's a significantly better player.

Even if Lynch is a better player than Brown, your argument is that Brown is the wrong TYPE of player and he is the same type of player that Lynch is.

Lynch is a better player than Brown but the difference is not huge, Brown is still a very good player:

As others here have said.

if you need a whole shoulder/knee/ankle strapped in Jan before training

you are not fully functioning

should have been fixed before Xmas

unless it’s brand new.

get it fixed, no contact training, until you use less tape at training rather than playing a competitive match.

though that only gives something to aim at in a game.

We seem to have some experts on the amount of bandaging that disqualifies a player from training who were mysteriously silent on that subject before now.   Let's see what happens and hope for the best.

Since we're making comparisons with Lynch, I assume everyonerecalls that in his final season with Gold Coast -

https://www.abc.net.au/news/2018-10-02/tom-lynch-confirms-he-wants-to-play-at-richmond-in-2019/10328624

"The Suns full-forward played the opening six rounds of the season before a knee injury sidelined him until round 11.

His return only lasted a month before he reaggravated the injury and later opted for season-ending surgery."

Also, on the taping thing, there are plenty of blokes who get strapped for mental reasons.

I've played with many blokes who were so used to being taped that they could not make the leap to removing it

Interesting that his knee was strapped up before that incident.
Not to worried about this.
knee swelling would be quite normal in a Football Club, when you consider what they do!!

Brace yourself, from tomorrow Ben Brown will be ruled out for the season, mark my words.

This.

Do it with my right shoulder. Felt like I went into games confident that the strapping kept it more stable after an injury many years ago.

Haven't had an issue ever since now that I get it taped each game. But yet according to @DeeSpencer I shouldn't have been training all this time ?‍♂️

This is a big statement to make on the back of 0 internal information.

You've put yourself out there..

  • AFLW PREVIEW: Gold Coast

On Friday, the Demons return to our Casey Fields fortress where they have a 77% win rate. The scent of September is in the air and the struggling Suns are on the horizon. The Cranbourne weather forecast? Ominous, like the match itself: a strong chance of carnage. Let’s be honest, last week’s first half against the West Coast was a training drill but we dropped our guard in the final quarter. While this match is a mismatch on paper — second versus seventeenth — football is won in the wind, the contests, and the moments.

  • 2025 Player Reviews: #32 Tom Sparrow

The rugged Sparrow’s career appears to have plateaued in recent years. He makes the side on a week to week basis but he is unable to establish a foothold in the team’s midfield and arguably performs best outside of the contest in a forward position without being a goal kicker. He remains a good honest foot soldier but is not a star.

  • 2025 Player Reviews: #33 Tom Fullarton

Fullarton managed a couple of games in the first half of the season but soon found himself back in the VFL. There, he found a niche at centre half back but it was not enough to retain a place on the list at season’s end.

  • 2025 Player Reviews: #35 Harrison Petty

Entering 2025, it looked as if Petty would be secured in a defensive position, but plans shifted and he spent more time forward, averaging just over a goal per game throughout the season. It remains uncertain which area of the ground he will be expected to cover under the new coaching regime.

  • 2025 Player Reviews: #36 Kysaiah Pickett

The dynamic small forward, possessing an innate ability to generate excitement with his explosive play around the goals, successfully transitioned into a role that afforded him more time in the midfield. The club also negotiated a long-term deal with Pickett, thereby eliminating any prospect of a move west by their star young player.

For a few years now, he has been a reliable, hard working pressure forward, but in 2025, Chandler elevated his performance, becoming an integral component of the team with enough versatility to play effectively on a wing from time to time.
