I have a strange soft spot for Weideman because I think he has a chronic bad luck condition. Unfortunately that also means I watch him closely in constant hope that it will turn in his favour.

The luck isn't turning and I'm finally losing faith that he is going to force it to turn, too.

I really think he shouldn't be playing as a key target forward, but that is where he is so seriously needed.

I watched my daughters under 11 netball and saw some of Sam in the girls. Some were lost and ran around. They tried but ultimately didn’t have the right intensity or positioning to get the ball.

I’d like to understand Sam’s mindset right now.  Does he really desperately want it ? Really want? Really push himself physically to the edge. He was a talented young sports star who rose on talent and his physical height.  But now in the AFL it demands more. Perhaps the coaching and development has been poor. Not sure Stafford is the man for our forward line coaching.

I think you might have been able to blame that in the past but not during Sam's  time.

Until last night I had been one of Sam’s very few supporters, valiantly holding onto hope that he at last would bloom into a gun forward. Unfortunately, after last nights performance, it pains me to say that I can longer con myself into believing he deserves a place in our team. Sorry Sam, you’ve lost me.

I agree with your last statements. How can the coaching staff, after 5 (?) years, not be working on his deficiencies. You'd have to think he has not one ounce of Clarry's 'see ball, get ball' ferocity.

He competed for a mark with Pearce at one point (last quarter) and stood idle as Pearce just ran away after neither marked. I've seen similar all too often. BTW I'd love to see him succeed. How long do we wait?

We all know that the answer is no. He has had ample opportunity to cement himself and prove he is good enough. He simply is not.

That’s ok, not all players in the AFL are considered ‘A grade’. But unfortunately for Sam, we require at least B+ performances given we are firmly in our window, Weid is C-grade at best. Unfortunately we are in a position where we have no one else to push him out of the team, so hopefully he can make the most of this good fortune and I hope he does. But come the end of year, if he wants consistent game time, he needs to get much better (highly unlikely) or seek opportunity elsewhere.

The hunt for premierships is hard fought and we cannot afford anyone dragging us down waiting for them to come good. It’s a ruthless business…………..Sam is not.

Melbourne has too strong a list to keep giving Weid one last chance after another. Goodwin said in his presser that Brown is good to go next week.

One change re Coll ... BBB for Weid. Thats it.  No mention  of Jackson or Lever  being injured.

Toss Jacko into CHF see what he can  do infront of 80,000 on the G. May as well throw him to the wolves. Looks like he's going back to WA.

I’m possibly being a bit over-dramatic here, but I think he got some serious yips after the June ‘19 missed kick after the siren. If you recall, for some reason the cameras were in the Demons rooms, focusing on Sam who was literally in tears (it was a pretty rank thing to broadcast imo). I think something got to him that night that he hasn’t been able to shake.

Glad someone said it.

He was held/pushed in every single contest that I saw (Gawn was held a significant amount as well). Some people need to seriously get some perspective.

And other forwards aren't? Some on here think Weid should get infinite chances

Done. Hopefully last game he ever plays for the club. No heart,no hunger & no desire. Time to move on, trade him for a 4th rounder at best & wipe out hands clean. Can’t believe anyone sees any hope in him still, he runs away from contests, has no 2nd effort & doesn’t want to be an AFL player. To say that he got pushed around or grabbed last night is such a pathetic claim as it’s every defenders job to do that. Sam has to want to beat that, not just succumb to it.Also this whole it wasn’t a night for forwards because of a bit of mist is rubbish. I mean blokes like Lockett,Dunstall,Ablett ran around in ankle deep mud, hail etc & still performed. He played on a perfectly manicured oval with no mud,but a light drizzle yet it hampered him? Rain also doesn’t stop a player from crashing a pack, from leading, from 2nd efforts etc, he never got near the ball so you can’t blame a light just on his stinker of a performance.

Yep, and it's pretty clear Goody isn't a fan of Weid and even with our probable lack of key forward depth end of this year he might still be gone.

Just staggered some still haven't adjusted their expectations about him and still get so upset when he doesn't play a good game.

Expectations? How low would you're expectations have to be to not get upset. Pretty sure most people have lowered their expectations I know I don't have any and just hope he does something anything.

I watched last night, no sound,

when sam had a little cameo I thought he must have been subbed  on.

thought he did well then and later but what did he do in the first half.
I keep thinking he shows improvement but

hell the improvement is slow.

good to win last night

Oh you must have (selectively) missed all the 'break out game' 'take his chance' 'still got hopes' posts every time he's mentioned.

Welcome to Demonland!

Don't really know what you're talking about but I know you've never lost an argument so I'll give up on this topic you can keep accepting his under performing due to people having too much expectation of him.

At the ground I thought he competed reasonably well all night. Played a role but will be replaced by BBBB

Please show me where I've accepted him under performing?

Just continually surprised by the reactions when he plays a poor game. He's a depth forward who might be traded even though we'll be struggling for key forward/ruck depth end of year. He's on a short contract for minimum chips and the coach's comments whenever asked about him aren't generally encouraging.

Then people jump on Demonland and sook about him like they didn't expect him to not play well.

Yes. all forwards get their colours lowered, he's a great defender,, but this in not once in a while,  it's a consistent pattern across multiple games over years.

No I think they've just had enough of it

The weird thing is after the Essendon game this year where he had seven shots on goal for 4:3, most of us thought that the penny had dropped. He would finally live up to his potential.

This game like the final against Geelong are one offs.

Weid he just can’t find form in the seniors. I think he had 1k 1m and 1g. it’s a real worry tbh.

would consider resting Jacko and bringing in Tomlinson as a forward and put Weid in the ruck with Maxy. It could help him find form.

Right outa left Field ....set Smith up as a forward to crash packs and take the odd speccy! Totally Flawless Logic.... Oh and Weeds is like the Graham Bonnet song right now "Its all Over Now Baby Blue" probably one of WCW s most favourite songs I could imagine! And Ahhh also one of mine! No Doubt Uncle Bitter would be a "Warm Ride" Fan as well, but just pure conjecture!😁

That’s a Bob Dylan song!

Weed must have missed the ruthless memo.

Or perhaps he misread it, and thought it it said toothless.

Interesting that Goodwin praised his overall game in the Post Match, along with other Midfielders

Despite a spirited third quarter surge, the Demons have slumped to their worst start to a season since 2012, remaining winless and second last on the ladder after a 39-point defeat to Essendon at Adelaide Oval in Gather Round.

It’s Game Day, and the Demons are staring down the barrel of an 0-5 start for the first time since 2012 as they take on Essendon at Adelaide Oval for Gather Round. In that forgettable season, Melbourne finally broke their drought by toppling the Bombers. Can lightning strike twice? Will the Dees turn their nightmare start around and breathe life back into 2025?

  • PREVIEW: Essendon

As the focus of the AFL moves exclusively to South Australia for Gather Round, the question is raised as to what are we going to get from the  Melbourne Football Club this weekend? Will it be a repeat of the slop fest of the last three weeks that have seen the team score a measly 174 points and concede 310 or will a return to the City of Churches and the scene where they performed at their best in 2024 act as a wakeup call and bring them out of their early season reverie?  Or will the sleepy Dees treat their fans to a reenactment of their lazy effort from the first Gather Round of two years ago when they allowed the Bombers to trample all over them on a soggy and wet Adelaide Oval? The two examples from above tell us how fickle form can be in football. Last year, a committed group of players turned up in Adelaide with a businesslike mindset. They had a plan, went in confidently and hard for the football and kicked winning scores against both home teams in a difficult environment for visitors. And they repeated that sort of effort later in the season when they played Essendon at the MCG.
