Just goes to show much of a farce this team is and how it's picked on reputation and hype more than anything. I don't know who's on the panel but they clearly weren't watching many Melbourne games.

Max Gawn - Injured for 3 games, well beaten in 2 (Port and West Coast), hurt and ineffective in another (Adelaide). That's over a third of the season he hasn't impacted. Has a high reputation.

Clayton Oliver - some really good games and overall a decent season, but nowhere AA squad worthy. Plenty of games where he couldn't hit a target. Has a high reputation.

Christian Petracca - no surprises there. Well done Trac.

No May genuinely makes me angry. Not only does he miss playing finals yet again, but he can't get acknowledged for the Goliath year he had.

Couldn't disagree more. Demonland groupthink.

No May? Laughable really. He - or Trac - will win our B&F.

Wishful thinking...oh, you're talking about the player not the month. In Victoria, May was just one of the months, along with  a few others such as April, July, August and September we all wish we didn't have in 2020.

We should have seen this coming, the same people that made us fly up to Cairns for a same day game. absolutely pathetic. Collingwood over represented as usual.

Steven, your an all australian in our minds.

Maxy actually deserves to make it, he only had two bad games this year, one against west coast and the other against port, and he got hit around a bit by ryder and marshall in the saints game.

Every other game was a complete demolition job on his part. Can't see why they wouldnt include him. but theres too much hype surrounding nic nat i guess so trac will probably be the only demon to make it.

Just for those non-supercoach demonlanders, below is max's weekly scores for this year, you don't have to put too much stock into them if you don't want, but he should definitely be in the picture for selection imo. Someone who talked about reputation at least for max i think is very wrong. He totally deserves to be in the squad and should be very much considered for the team.

You say that, but Grundy had more hit outs to advantage than Gawn. Despite playing more games than Gawn, Grundy also had 97 more hit outs.

So Grundy barely getting going was still statistically better than Gawn.

A very interesting selection of stats.  I'm sure you don't need me to point you to the footy wire stats comparison but anyway - Gawn has had a significantly better season statistically than Grundy. Gawn clearly leads on average kicks, marks, contested marks, total disposals, metres gained(more than double),  contested possessions, 1%'s, rebound 50's, inside 50's, clearances (just) and hit out averages are 32.7 to 32.8 (to Grundy).  There's an array of other areas where he has Grundy beaten anyway.  So my point stands.  You can compare Gawn with any other ruck in the league and in its entirety he is statistically better than all of them.

Anyway, I'm pleased he plays for us and I'd have him over and above any other ruckman in the comp.

Genuine question. Did Matt Taberner suddenly turn into a footballer?

He's made the squad and I don't recall him having much ability, but haven't really seen him this year or heard any hype about break-out years etc. Cheers

Yes, cant think of a single reason why May didn't get a gig - preposterous!

Just had a quick look through AFL stats pro because I'm astounded by this decision.

Vs WCE (Kennedy) - no goals

Vs Carl (mix) - one goal to McGovern

Vs Geel (Hawkins/Ratu) - no goals (Lever on Hawkins for his single goal)

Vs Rich (mostly Lynch) - we could say 2 here (Lynch kicked 3 but one he appears to be marked by Lever, one from poor turnover in middle of the ground and no clear opponent, one from free kick against Smith when picking up loose ball - prob May on him at the time)

Vs GCS (King) - one goal

Vs Hawthorn (mostly Gunston) - 2 goals (one kicked on Lever)

Vs Bris (Hipwood) - one goal

Vs Port (Dixon) - no goals (Dixon's one goal was a free in ruck contest against Gawn)

Vs Adelaide (Walker) - no goals

Vs North (mix) - one goal when on Larkey

Vs Coll (Reid/Cameron) - 1-2 goals (one was a high tackle free against Hibbo)

Vs WB - Naughton - no goals

Vs Stk (King/Marshall) - 2 goals (one each)

Vs Syd (mix) - 1 goal (McLean)

Vs Freo (Taberner) - no goals

Vs GWS (Cameron) - 1 goal

Vs Ess (mostly Daniher) - no goals

So I say 13 goals from 17 games, which included playing on the best tall forwards in the league (Cameron, Lynch, Dixon, Hawkins, Kennedy etc)

Fair enough.

I think we have a lot of work to do to maximise our midfield dominance and Max is an integral part of that, because he's too easy to play against.

The committee:

Gillon McLachlan (chairman), Kevin Bartlett, Luke Darcy, Steve Hocking, Glen Jakovich, Chris Johnson, Cameron Ling, Matthew Richardson and Warren Tredrea.

Darcy, Richo and Ling clearly don’t watch a lot of footy (that isn’t their teams) based on their horrific commentary.

Also, any chance anyone whose played the game in the last 10 years gets a shot at the committee? I feel like the AFL just rewards channel 7, and then throws in Tredrea and Jakovich to appease SA and WA.

Jeepers. Max is becoming overrated for mine.

Max broke even with two rookies this year, missed a few games and his influence had no influence on many results.

I'm sure internally Max would be demanding much higher standards of himself and should be. Was an ordinary year.

Jeez you are being tough on Maxy AF.

Sure his year wasn't as good as his last few but he was so far the best ruck man it is not funny.

He played nearly 93% game time and almost all of that time in the ruck. Was smashed and physically targeted all year by opposition thugs, sorry rucks.

Since the Port game carried at least two pretty serious injuries that we know off (and no doubt other niggles) - a lat tear and a PCL. The latter an injury that often means six weeks plus on the sidelines.

Incredible he played as many games as he did, particularly given the travel schedule,  compressed fixturing and that fact Goody barely gave him a chop out all season (by comparisons Nik Nat only played 69% game time and did much less travel).

Was ranked 8th for average contested marks, with nearly two marks per game (as a comparison Nic Nat had 0.4 a game) and second most hit outs per game.

In terms of influence,  like most rucks (less so nic nat because he is he is different sort of player) he needs his mids to be switched on and have really effective systems in place by the coaches. With justification, you have been critical of both these elements at different times this year.

If his mids get tackled immediately or don't give it off when they have a chance, or don't block an opposition player sharking his taps then his influence is diminished.

Worked his guts out all season and in every game. One of the few dees players i saw who gritted his teeth and put every ounce of effort into games when they were eon the line.

One of our few true leaders.

And was a brilliant skipper to boot. In his first go as skipper, in an incredibly tough year.

Fully deserves his AA spot. I'd make him captain.

Oliver and Viney were both in the top 20 for clearances (and Petracca was a stand out in there too), so I think the problem rests with Max just as much as the mids. His tap work is too predictable.

Well that support my arguments, not yours. The fact that that we had three players ranking so high in clearances suggests he did have a big influence.

The predictably, or otherwise, of his tap work is largely a function of the set ups they design and practice in the preseason in training. Set ups designed by the mid field coaches.

No point randomly hitting the taps to a spot if the mids don't know what he is planning to do. And maybe some of them 'aint too bright, and struggle to learn new patterns (jack says hi)?

Absolutely robbed! Disgraceful decision.

I'm sorry but Max Gawn should not even be on that list. That should be Steven May’s instead.

Agree Maxy cost us a bit this season, his disposal by foot was abysmal

May was fantastic a lot better than Darcy Moore but hey May doesn’t play for Collingwood

Agreed. I'm not saying Max will rest on his laurels. I'm just saying he's too easy to play against.

A reminder that Cameron Ling and Luke Darcy are on the selection panel FFS.
The AFLPA and coaches awards are the only ones with integrity IMO.

These turgid [censored] suckers.  Over opinionated knobs who get sucked in to the Bruce and BT excitement meter.  Right Lingie?

THE MEANING OF FOOTY by Whispering Jack

Throughout history various philosophers have grappled with the meaning of life. Aristotle, Aquinas, Kant, Nietzsche, Schopenhauer and a multitude of authors of diverse religious texts all tried. As society became more complex, the question became attached to specific endeavours in life even including sporting pursuits where such questions arose among our game’s commentariat as, “what is the meaning of football”? Melbourne coach Simon Goodwin must be tired of dealing with such a dilemma but,
