Tom Langdon on sen just said Melbourne would be entitled to feel slighted as it was a substantially higher offer.  I guess he is referring to the extra year $.

this would be the first time in some time (last three, four seasons) that we've been openly targeting a player and missed out on them?

When our interest becomes public we generally have a pretty good success rate.

Geelong will be stuffed in 2 years time with their old list. Better be after Philips in a big way.

Thank god for that, now go and get Tom Phillips, a 24yo that’s  been top 10 the last 2 years at Collingwood compared to a 32yo with a dodgy shoulder.

guaranteed that 3rd year would’ve been a disaster like Lewis

We could've gotten Smith and Phillips, or a player of his calibre somewhere else on the field. It wasn't either/or.

So basically he comes to us hes a pariah for taking the money. He goes to geelong hes a pariah for wanting success the easy way.  He stays at hawks he's loyal but without money or success and has to listen to jeff k's drivel regularly. Tough gig. Should have just retired and saved the hate.

No hard feelings to Smith from me; I think we may have dodged a bullet on this one.  The end comes quickly for outside pacey players and I don’t think he has close to three years left in him.

If I was offered a couple of years guaranteed wages to live in Torquay or similar, I wouldn’t be able to sign fast enough. Even more so with what’s happened this year with lockdown and hubs.

Also pairs up beautifully with Menegola who has been sensational this year.

The extra year was clearly not enough when weighed against driving to Casey every week

Don't know if this has been stated before, but a friend with Hawthorn connections has said Smith is 99% going to Melbourne

Never trust a Hawthorn connected mate...

Cats wings have Menegola, Duncan (or is he more primary mid now?), Blicavs plays there and Clarke can't get a game. Smith doesn’t seem a major need.

He is a Geelong need they like replacing old players with old players, Ablett out higgings 32, 33 next year, and Smith 32 and 6 months  at the start of next year In.

it’s so so wrong isn’t it. why frikn even bother anymore. Feel like i want to stop following the afl altogether.

Stop crying Smith is 32 in December, this season his disposal efficiency has fallen by 8%, his career average is  74% this year it was at 66%, Ed Langdon a dispose efficiency is 74%. Smith disposal average this year was 17 down from 20, he turns it over over more than he has ever before  in his life.

People need to stop ripping into @Dr evil As per his intel/contacts whatever you want to call it, at the time that he received info it was looking extremely likely that Smith was going to join us. It sounds like Smith changed his mind at the last second and if Dr Evil hadn't received an update just before FA kicked off, how was he supposed to know?

I respect the Doc for providing what he knew and things can change very quickly. Smith is going to the pussycats, so we move on now and put our focus on Brown and Phillips.

He must have smelt desperation a million miles away. Three years always ridiculous - if he's still good enough in two the Cats will give him a third.

I don't take this as a slight on Melbourne - he's chasing success by going with the club he thinks is closest to the pin.  Hawks offer wasn't much different to Geelong's, plus the whole club loyalty aspect, and he turned his back on them too.  Hawks supporters I know even seem to have think they were actually offering him more money than Geelong too  (not sure how true that is).

That said, I personally don't get his motivation.  He's had success, he's got nothing to prove.  Chase the paycheck or stay with your mates, but why move to Geelong just to look for a cheap flag to add to the collection?

smith was a dud

mere shadow of his former self

not worth 3 years or the money

etc etc

now i feel better

100% correct that’s he’s off to theCats.

Much better result for Demons to get Philips or Polec!

I have no love for the hawks but I got to say if I was them I’d be pretty p*ed off with Smith. They gave him the opportunity to win 3 flags was it too much to ask that he hang around to help mentor and guide the new generation. And to the Cats as well. The hawks hate the cats. Players who show loyalty are held in much higher esteem by supporters. He has sullied his legacy there big time.

Very questionable motivation.

Yeah he should've stayed at Hawthorn forever like Hodge, Mitchell and Lewis did.

    HIGHLIGHTS/LOWLIGHTS by Whispering Jack

Melbourne traveled across the continent to take on the Fremantle Dockers in sweltering conditions at Mandurah south of Perth in a game that delivered the club both its highlight and its lowlight in the first minute.  But first, let’s start by doing away with the usual cliches used in connection with the game. It was just a practice match and the result didn’t matter. Bad kicking is bad football. The game was played in severe heat, the swirly breeze played havoc with both teams resulting in

A couple of Demonland Trackwatchers headed down to Gosch's Paddock to bring you their observations from today's training session before the Demons head off to Perth for their final Practice Match. KEV MARTIN'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS Beautiful morning, not much wind, more than a couple of dozen spectators.  The players were up and about, boisterous and having fun. THE ACCIDENTAL DEMONS by The Oracle

In the space of eight days, the Melbourne Football Club’s plans for the coming year were turned upside down by two season-ending injuries to players who were contending strongly for places in its opening round match against the GWS Giants. Shane McAdam was first player to go down with injury when he ruptured an Achilles tendon at Friday afternoon training, a week before the cut-off date for the AFL’s pre-season supplemental selection period (“SSP”). McAdam was beginning to get some real mom

RETURN TO NORMAL by Whispering Jack

One of my prized possessions is a framed, autographed guernsey bearing the number 31 worn by my childhood hero, Melbourne’s champion six time premiership player Ronald Dale Barassi who passed away on 16 September 2023, aged 87. The former captain who went on to a successful coaching career, mainly with other clubs, came back to the fold in his later years as a staunch Demon supporter who often sat across the way from me in the Northern Stand of the MCG cheering on the team. Barassi died the
