Gobsmacked by this.....nothing like the team that played on the weekend? Short break and 7am flight doesnt help. We dont have a coach who can arrest this tho....

We weren’t good against St Kilda. We broke even at best and had two match winners drag us over the line. Just.

Today nobody is playing a team game. Players running into each other, too many contesting for every ball, no support or defensive pressure.

We are downhill skiers. We are playing one of the best defensive sides in the competition. They are 16th for crying out loud and are playing with more pressure and intent than we have all season.

I can guarantee you that we will not come back and win this game.

Sydney have kept us to two goals in a half and they are up by 5.

They would be loving this, as they love nothing more than a low scoring scrap.

All over.

As bad a quarter as we've played all year, unforgivable given the opponent and what's at stake.

All of the hallmarks of bad Melbourne are on display. Weak tackling efforts. Hollywood handpasses. Turnovers. No plan forward of centre. Outnumbered seemingly everywhere. Slow, being outrun. It's all there, and it's all terrible.

OMac's made a mistake every time the ball's gone near him. Smith close to likewise. It's bad enough that Jones turned it over on his left once, but to do it again after taking a mark inside 50 is disgraceful. Melksham didn't touch it that quarter, Weideman can't get near it, ANB's struggling.

We saw Essendon pull back a 36-point deficit after looking equally incompetent last week. Other than that, I can't think of any reason to think we have any chance in this game.

What a disgraceful first half, let alone 2nd qtr.

No moves from the coaches box.

How OMac retained his spot was ridiculous

Jones is finished

Omac... Why? All of Demonland knew he wasn't needed.

Goodwins bizarre selections continue

Shocking lazy performance. Wow.

Sydney has been good though. Longmire won't let them lose this.

I said it earlier, but I don't understand how a side goes from playing some terrific, team first football just four or so days ago, to serving up this absolute slop.

This is on both coach and the players.  The players are playing arrogant, lazy football, but then why isn't Goody making sure they don't have the loose player behind the ball?  Every time we go forward we are outnumbered.

Absolutely shocking, I’m disgusted, basics have gone out the window. Usually a goalless quarter means a loss for us. Better respond in Q3.

Should have switched to man on man and put an extra or two in the backline to stop the onslaught of goals with the wind

Did we have any plan for and against the wind?? Didn't seem to change. The swans certainly did

This club is a [censored] disgrace. How can you put Oscar and Smith in the same team? Oscar is the worst footballer in the league and Smith is not much better. How many games is Jones going to cost us? He is a disgrace. Gawn the only one having a go. The team is a disgrace bye bye Goodwin.

These over the head handballs are a joke.

No other side does it as consistently as us.

I don't usually take any notice of Derwayne but his comment "too much Hollywood" summed it up perfectly

For whatever reason im fairly calm. I almost expected this sort of performance because a) something is on th eline so we are mentally weak in those situations; b) Longmire is a tactical coach so Goody was always gong to get outplayed.

Oscar Mcdonald is an embarrassment.

Badly outcoaching Goodwin atm. Knows every move in the book today. A lot of this is on the players too but wow structurally we are awful.

It's just so sad to watch Jonesy out there.

He's just no longer up to it. Give the guy a break and "manage" him out of the side.

Please.

    HIGHLIGHTS/LOWLIGHTS by Whispering Jack

Melbourne traveled across the continent to take on the Fremantle Dockers in sweltering conditions at Mandurah south of Perth in a game that delivered the club both its highlight and its lowlight in the first minute.  But first, let’s start by doing away with the usual cliches used in connection with the game. It was just a practice match and the result didn’t matter. Bad kicking is bad football. The game was played in severe heat, the swirly breeze played havoc with both teams resulting in

THE ACCIDENTAL DEMONS by The Oracle

In the space of eight days, the Melbourne Football Club’s plans for the coming year were turned upside down by two season-ending injuries to players who were contending strongly for places in its opening round match against the GWS Giants. Shane McAdam was first player to go down with injury when he ruptured an Achilles tendon at Friday afternoon training, a week before the cut-off date for the AFL’s pre-season supplemental selection period (“SSP”). McAdam was beginning to get some real mom

RETURN TO NORMAL by Whispering Jack

One of my prized possessions is a framed, autographed guernsey bearing the number 31 worn by my childhood hero, Melbourne’s champion six time premiership player Ronald Dale Barassi who passed away on 16 September 2023, aged 87. The former captain who went on to a successful coaching career, mainly with other clubs, came back to the fold in his later years as a staunch Demon supporter who often sat across the way from me in the Northern Stand of the MCG cheering on the team. Barassi died the
