Westhoff retires, Port decide they need an additional mature forward to partner with Dixon.

McDonald to Port for Watts and change.

Good times.

I wonder if he's in their best twenty two

He did come 21st in their B&F in his first season after being chastened by his departure at Melbourne.

So I guess its a yes...

I think he’s cooked.

You may well be right. Few players have ever really come back from an injury of that nature.

Read a quote from Hinkley that Watts has only recently felt comfortable with his body after the leg injury.

Ironically, Pies this week and the last time we beat them was when Watts sunk them with that goal at the end.

What is the irony?

We kick the ball so poorly going inside 50.

Jack Watts is a very good kick of the footy.

Do you see where I’m going with this?

we were a bad kicking team with Watts in red and blue.

Love that description

Ironically i feel like Watts has the attributes to really add to a team like Port. they've got the quality to cover his deficiencies and i can see him playing a role come finals

Yeah he is a bad player.  No idea how hes lasted 11 seasons in the AFL.

Pick 1 has some weird mystique about it, no matter how much you suck clubs will keep giving you chances.

Have another drink.

Jack was a very good Demon and should be remembered.  Always welcome back.  152 games. 9 years.

He is still great mates with most of the players and always was the most generous bloke with supporters and our young kids at footy clinics and functions.

The fairy tale goes like this;  Jack gets recalled to the seniors during Ports finals campaign because of injuries to key forwards. Jack plays in GF and kicks 5 goals including the winning goal after the final siren 55 metres out on the boundary line............against us!

But then there’s a score review. Touched. Decision on the scoreboard. Behind. Dees get up by 1 point.

Footywire seems to think Watts (and Lynden Dunn) must no longer be playing. In the list of "Most Games, No Finals" both appear in the column of all players, past and present whereas their names are missing from the column showing current day players. Jack has played 174 and Dunn 196 games without a final. Personally, I'd like to think that's all the fault of Port Adelaide and Collingwood respectively.

(The only current Melbourne player on the list is Steven May on 140. I'm not sure whether this number includes yesterday's game, or, indeed, any of this season).

This.

Regardless of what people think, I hope Watts is welcomed back to the club once his career is over. 150 games in red and blue is no easy feat.

I fear for his future and don't know if it will last beyond 2 more years tops. Those injuries are very tough to get back from.

Great character and one of the good people of football. The world would be a better place if more people had the character of Jack Watts. Always welcome back at MFC once it's all said and done. Should never figure in worst no.1 pick discussions among AFL fans, long long way from that.

Umpire 31 rules that Watts played on while out of bounds in the first application of that rule in 5 seasons

You can't get away with only being a good kick though. 22 guys need to defend and win contests before you get that kick.

It's why Bennell can't hold his spot in our side. For all the good things he can do with ball in hand, the rest of the team has to carry him defensively.

Watts was more than 'just a good kick'. Go and watch some of the highlights, especially under Roos.

  • REPORT: West Coast

On a night of counting, Melbourne captain Max Gawn made sure that his contribution counted. He was at his best and superb in the the ruck from the very start of the election night game against the West Coast Eagles at Optus Stadium, but after watching his dominance of the first quarter and a half of the clash evaporate into nothing as the Eagles booted four goals in the last ten minutes of the opening half, he turned the game on its head, with a ruckman’s masterclass in the second half.  No superlatives would be sufficient to describe the enormity of the skipper’s performance starting with his 47 hit outs, a career-high 35 possessions (22 of them contested), nine clearances, 12 score involvements and, after messing up an attempt or two, finally capping off one of the greatest rucking performances of all time, with a goal of own in the final quarter not long after he delivered a right angled pass into the arms of Daniel Turner who also goaled from a pocket (will we ever know if the pass is what was intended). That was enough to overturn a 12 point deficit after the Eagles scored the first goal of the second half into a 29 point lead at the last break and a winning final quarter (at last) for the Demons who decided not to rest their champion ruckman at the end this time around.
