Goldstein then Grundy is a terrible duo to have for Max, there's not a good option to rest him for either game. I think if he's right to go we have to keep playing him and try to get the win against North.

I have my doubts over the following players:
ANB - suspended
Bennell, Jones - off the pace
Vanders - ?injury
Tomlinson at CHB

And that's before I get to Gus and Sparrow making us one mid too heavy, Harmes at half back, Melksham's efforts and so on.

I'd probably go
Out: ANB, Jones, Tomlinson
In: Pickett, Hannan, Oscar

The North boards seem to think Goldstein is running on empty and many are suggesting to rest him.

Gawn managed when we've got Goldstein and then Grundy.

He should have been managed this week.

100%, I'm baffled why of all games when he is clearly tired they didn't give him this one off. Whether he plays against North or not we will be well beaten in the ruck taps because he looked off the boil tonight. Terrible player management, perhaps the first black mark against Burgess.

Maybe the Dees and North match committees could "come to an understanding" and not play either of their no.1 rucks!

snake oil

we used to think Misson was the guru

The drover's dog could tell you Gawn needed a rest.

Stupid me thought that was why they played T Mac against Port but no MFC only know one style.

Wouldn't be against that, I'd also throw out the idea of trying Viney in a HF role where we've been playing Jones/AvB and give Brayshaw more minutes in the guts. Challenge Gus by asking the question was 2018 a fluke?

I think it’s a perfect game to play Preuss if fit and has some level of scratch match or training track form.

He would’ve rucked against Goldstein a thousand times at training so is likely to know how to nullify him in ruck contests.

Yes Preuss is nowhere near Gawn for marking prowess and a saviour in the backline, but Gawn didn’t do much of that last night anyway as it looked like he was being managed forward rather than dropping into the backline.

Gawn is too valuable to run into the ground.

Jackson looks to be finding his feet as a second ruck.

Not to underestimate North, but they are hardly setting to world on fire at the moment.

Those suggesting Bennell be dropped, bear in mind he has played a handful of games in 3 years and still coming to grips with his confidence after those terrible calf issues.  He is the class act in our forward line and should be persisted with. Rested, maybe. Omitted, no.

I wouldn’t be dropping him but can his body hold up to a 4 day break?

He'll probably be managed.  Given his history I'd be horrified if we picked him to play in four days time.  Goody's pretty much said he's the only bloke that needs to be managed off short breaks.   If he wasn't managed he may need to be dropped anyway, he offers nothing defensively at the moment - that's not so much a knock on him, just a recognition that he hasn't played a lot of footy in the last three years.

Goldstein struggled last night against the Cats.  I think Gawn can handle that one reasonably well.  He is the fittest ruckman in the league, back not withstanding. Also North are coming off the 4 days as well and Goldy is 4 years older than Max.  After that, Grundy has not been anywhere near his best all season and it may be an opportunity for Preuss, but it is also nearly a normal week after we play North.  I reckon the big fella can manage it.  He is an outstanding leader and was quite rightly lauded by Goody after the game.

AVB if injured , bring in TMac

Skills are the key issue. Drop Bennell at our risk. He's one of the few who can kick.  Granted he has to get first.

Got to drop Oliver. His disposals are a liability to our team.  We should trade him while he still has value too.

You guys are a disgrace.

Captain my captain, what about my suggestion of an amnesty for the non believers, the heretics?

We need all demonlanders to join our  crusade.

Now is the time to come together, for forgiveness for those who have turned away from the light and join as one in the church of Clayton

Let me do the sarcasm, it doesn't become you. You stay above the ruck and let me battle wirh the pagans in their muddy paddocks.

Oh and by the by, best not mention his disposals. There was no miracle last night (actually maybe one - he got two frees for being scargged) he still remains a poor kick.

I actually thought Jones did okay on a wing last night.  He certainly wasn't one of our worst - I'd be dropping AVB, ANB or Bennell before I went with Chunk.

You would think with the four day turnaround that we might swing a few changes, but I can't see who they will be for.  At least we have plenty of fit players waiting in the wings and ready to go, so if the club feels the need to drop and rest 5/6 players, we will have guys ready and raring to go.

if lockhart is unfortunate enough for the graze of a punch, then jetta the obvious in...although wouldn't be surprised if they went for jordon

i know bennell didn't do much but he's just dangerous enough so if he pulls up okay then all things being equal i'd prefer him in the 22 to hunt or some such

B: Lockhart - May - Lever
HB: Salem - Tomlinson - Hibberd
C : Langdon - Petracca - Harmes
HF: Melksham - Jackson - Bennell
F: Fritsch - Weideman - Pickett
Foll: Gawn - Oliver - Viney
I/c: Jones - Brayshaw - Hannan - Sparrow

Agree entirely on Bennell. Let him get a block of games, he is the least of our worries and if we do make finals you want him there. If we dont make the finals he will be in the staters block for next year.

Presumably Pickett gets ANB's spot. if vandenBerg is injured, I'd get Hannan back in, as I don't think he should have been dropped.

I'm not sold, at all, on Jones and wouldn't be against bringing someone fresh into the side to help with the four day break.

They should know what they'll get with Tomlinson back there as well. He's fractionally quicker and he's definitely fitter and more willing to get involved in attacking play.

But against absolutely no one in the Crows forward line he had 1 intercept possession so he didn't win the ball back and he did very little with the ball either. The reasons for moving him - to get more uncontested possessions and kicking from the backline didn't really pan out.

North will likely go in with 2 of Larkey, Walker and Daw. The kind of big aerial threats that Oscar usually does ok on and who will probably prove too big and too strong for Tomlinson.

Yeah OK we get it, you don't like Tomlinson.

But much to your dismay, he was actually good last night, and I'm not sure Oscar will do any better on the "big aerial threats" of Larkey, Walker or Daw than Tomlinson will.

Tomlinson was asked to play a role, he played it well (no idea how you can be so confident that the reasons for moving him are limited to getting UPs and kicking from the backline - maybe it was just to play Oscar's role without the clangers?), and he deserves to hold his spot for at least one more week.

He looks sore D17. He cannot chase and was almost a liability last night.

Don't get me wrong,  I love him and yes he's one of our best kicks but the way he was running last night I can't see him playing this Sunday.

If we manage Gawn could TMac come in for him and do the ruck duties.

TMac has the tank so could be an option and could bring him back into some form. All he has to do is purely focus on the ruck.

Don't drop Bennell we have won every game with him in the side he is the missing link he has the skills we lack. Don't forget the great goal he kicked when we were struggling. Pickett and Jordon in Jones and ANB out.

Echoing Goody:  In: proper protection for Max.  Out:  cheap shots on Max stopping him getting to the contests.

I thought they gave Max a lot more forward/bench time in the last.  He finished the game on the pine.  Might be part of the management strategy?

    REDLEG PRIDE by Meggs

Hump day mid-week footy at the Redlegs home ground is a great opportunity to build on our recent improved competitiveness playing in the red and blue.   The jumper has a few other colours this week with the rainbow Pride flag flying this round to celebrate people from all walks of life coming together, being accepted. AFLW has been a benchmark when it comes to inclusivity and a safe workplace.  The team will run out in a specially designed guernsey for this game and also the following week

    REDEEMING by Meggs

It was such a balmy spring evening for this mid-week BNCA Pink Lady match at our favourite venue Ikon Park between two teams that had not won a game since round one.   After last week’s insipid bombing, the DeeArmy banner correctly deemanded that our players ‘go in hard, go in strong, go in fighting’, and girl they sure did!   The first quarter goals by Alyssa Bannan and Alyssia Pisano were simply stunning, and it was 4 goals to nil by half-time.   Kudos to Mick Stinear.

    REDEEM by Meggs

How will Mick Stinear and his dwindling list of fit and available Demons respond to last week’s 65-point capitulation to the Bombers, the team’s biggest loss in history?   As a minimum he will expect genuine effort from all of his players when Melbourne takes on the GWS Giants at Ikon Park this Thursday.  Happily, the ground remains a favourite Melbourne venue of players and spectators alike and will provide an opportunity for the Demons to redeem themselves. Injuries to star play

    EASYBEATS by Meggs

A beautiful sunny Friday afternoon, with a light breeze and a strong Windy Hill crowd set the scene, inviting one team to seize the day and take the important four points on offer. For the Demons it was not a good Friday, easily beaten by an all-time largest losing margin of 65 points.   Essendon threw themselves into action today, winning most of the contests and had three early goals with Daria Bannister on fire.  In contrast the Demons were dropping marks, hesitant in close and comm

    DEFUSE THE BOMBERS by Meggs

Last Saturday’s crushing loss to Fremantle, after being three goals ahead at three quarter time, should be motivation enough to bounce back for this very winnable Round 5 clash at Windy Hill. A first-time venue for the Melbourne AFLW team, this should be a familiar suburban, windy, footy environment for the players.   Essendon were brave and competitive last week against ladder leader Adelaide at Sturt’s home ground. A familiar name, Maddison Gay, was the Bombers best player with

    BLOW THE SIREN by Meggs

Fremantle hosted the Demons on a sunny 20-degree Saturdayafternoon winning the toss and electing to defend in the first quarter against the 3-goal breeze favouring the Parry Street end. There was method here, as this would give the comeback queens, the Dockers, last use of the breeze. The Melbourne Coach had promised an improved performance, and we did start better than previous weeks, winning the ball out of the middle, using the breeze advantage and connecting to the forwards.

    GETAWAY by Meggs

Calling all fit players. Expect every available Melbourne player to board the Virgin cross-continent flight to Perth for this Round 4 clash on Saturday afternoon at Fremantle Oval. It promises to be keenly contested, though Fremantle is the bookies clear favourite.  If we lose, finals could be remoter than Rottnest Island especially following on from the Dees 50-point dismantlement by North Melbourne last Sunday.  There are 8 remaining matches, over the next 7 weeks.  To Meggs’

    DRUBBING by Meggs

With Casey Fields basking in sunshine, an enthusiastic throng of young Demons fans formed a guard of honour for the evergreen and much admired 75-gamer Paxy Paxman. As the home team ran out to play, Paxy’s banner promised that the Demons would bounce back from last week’s loss to Brisbane and reign supreme.   Disappointingly, the Kangaroos dominated the match to win by 50 points, but our Paxy certainly did her bit.  She was clearly our best player, sweeping well in defence.

    GARNER STRENGTH by Meggs

In keeping with our tough draw theme, Week 3 sees Melbourne take on flag favourites, North Melbourne, at Casey Fields this Sunday at 1:05pm.  The weather forecast looks dry, a coolish 14 degrees and will be characteristically gusty.  Remember when Casey Fields was considered our fortress?  The Demons have lost two of their past three matches at the Field of Dreams, so opposition teams commute down the Princes Highway with more optimism these days.  The Dees held the highe
