Gawn might play more forward whilst Jackson does some rucking.  What the split is in percentage terms remains to be seen.  The MC might not know exactly either.

However,  it could be assumed that Weideman will be a stay-at-home forward so there's that.

Double-teaming a player like Gawn up forward is easier said than done esp if they need to keep an eye on Weideman as well.

So a lot may depend on how LJ goes in the ruck and on the ball.

And Jackson is a very different type of draftee.  He will have rucked and played as a very tall midfielder for a lot of his junior footy.  His ability as a forward is the question.

But Luke may not have been picked primarily to replace T-Mac's position.  Could be a bit of all sorts.  He is the very definition of a project player.

Gawn is also a horrible field kick and kick for goal. I'd rather they played him in the ruck and then rest him on the bench or across half back.

Let's see how the forward line functions tomorrow without him.

Yep.  My only worry is i don't think Jackson is ready to hold down a CHF role this early.  At some point hopefully yes.

So that leaves him playing a FF type role.  Probably better at this point.  But then i don't see Weid as suited to playing CHF either due to his lack of ability on the ground and in transition.

Does Jackson at CHF and Weid at FF look a whole lot more scrumptious a year or two down the track?  I personally think so and as Bruce is known to say on occasions....we might just see something pretty "Special!".

He's not that bad and lets face it,  most of our forwards aren't all that flash in front of goal.

We need marking strength and a tall presence up forward.  Gawn fits the bill but I'm advocating maybe only 20% - 30% forward.  Gawn can occupy the hotspot whenever possible,  which can bring our small forwards and other forwards into play.

Did you read my post as having Gawn up forward permanently or as a mainstay AF?  Because I certainly didn't mean it that way.

Jackson will almost certainly spend a bit of time on the ball (IMO) ... how much time,  who knows?

Key forwards these days are often there to provide structure.  So much so that Sydney were so worried about Reiwoldt & Lynch that they overdid the flood.

A mix of Weideman,  Gawn & Jackson can provide that structure.  And with a large bank of games to come in the next 6 weeks,  Max will need to be managed properly.

I agree with those who suggest Jackson will take a bit of the ruck load from Gawny. We are heading towards that period where we have plenty of games in a short period plus the Dons catch up game.

Managing Gawn would be a big factor with the advantage of getting games under Jackson's belt.

I hope they both have good games but my worry is we'll get plenty of inside 50's but not kick a winning score.

He's a WIP PF.  Much patience needed me thinks.  I have no issues with talent i just think he's a few pre-seasons of fitness and putting some meat on the bone away from holding down a KP.

Would have played Brown for next two to three weeks ahead of LJ.  Anyways good luck to him and hope he surprises with a vn game

Happy to go with Jackson ...whoever we would have picked won’t be the difference between winning & losing this game. We totally have the team to beat Hawks & I’d be hard pressed to find a reason for us to lose this. This game is on the players ...definitely not the coach & coaching panel!!

Gawn is a very good field kick, he hits his target more often than not in general play.  I agree he is a little dicey in front of the big sticks

Y'know, it just occurred to me that Luke Jackson might be the player to finally complete the magic puzzle that I've always wanted to see - a player who gets at least one of every single stat in a single game.

I've kept an eye on the likes of Franklin and Naitanui over the years but I don't think either ever did it all in one game.

That is absolutely not the case, he's been brilliant this year. Clearly been working on this part of his game and is best ruckman in the comp hands down this season

Am lukewarm on the selection Jackson at this stage. I agree that he has a lot of promise and will be a part of our long term future. But this is a must win game  for us and an experienced forward in Brown seems to be the smart choice up forward in my humble option. I would have thought that this was the ideal time to pick him when we are lacking in tall forwards and the basis of the reason to recruit him and if he is continually overlooked - then why did we recruit him?  Gee I hate the Hawks and hope that Jackson has an impact.

The circumstances are obviously different but selection has taken a bit of a different course this season,  all the same

Jones out and can't get back in.  Tomlinson out where previously that may not have happened.  Jetta dropped but returns soon after.  Rivers & Jackson given a taste and now Jackson gets another chance.

And Brown is pure back-up.  Which is not a bad recruiting move.  Same deal with Preuss.

And it now looks like the coaching panel recognises that we need structure up forward after trying out a medium sized forward line that didn't work.  Same deal down back where Oscar is now preferred over others.

Jackson plays because of the eye injury to T-Mac but the MC now gets another chance to see what Luke offers (albeit a very raw recruit)

But he can ruck alright and has a huge leap so he may surprise.

C'mon Picket get serious? Smith is rawer than Jackson and Brown is not a pack crunching forward like they hope Jackson to be. Jackson is clearly the best option.

Well sheesh if Chris Dawes has said that, then no wonder you are so confident!

I was indecisive until reading this.

THE MEANING OF FOOTY by Whispering Jack

Throughout history various philosophers have grappled with the meaning of life. Aristotle, Aquinas, Kant, Nietzsche, Schopenhauer and a multitude of authors of diverse religious texts all tried. As society became more complex, the question became attached to specific endeavours in life even including sporting pursuits where such questions arose among our game’s commentariat as, “what is the meaning of football”? Melbourne coach Simon Goodwin must be tired of dealing with such a dilemma but,

The two clubs have a history that goes right back to the time when the game was starting to become an organised sport but it’s the present that makes the task of previewing this contest so interesting. Both clubs recently reached the pinnacle of the competition winning premiership flags in 2021 and 2022 respectively, but before the start of this season, many good judges felt their time had passed - n

Demonland Trackwatcher Kev Martin was on hand at Gosch's Paddock for Monday's training session and made the following observations. About 38 to 40  players down at training.  BBB walking laps.  Charlie Spargo still in rehab, doing short run throughs.  Christian Salem has full kit on and doing individual work with a trainer. He is is starting to get into some sprints. I cannot see Andy Moniz-Wakefield out there. Jack Viney and Kade Chandler have broken away from the
