Yes it’s on the AFL site as well. A big surprise.

Good now I won't need to listen to the commentators go on about him being a great. Yes he was a good backman but I still debate how good he was on a 1 on 1 contest.

Mason cox ripped him apart last year and lets not forget his coward hit on watts when watts was beating him

Nah...he was a great player, like him or not.

All players lower their colours at some stage, the talk about him not being good in one on one contests is just talk.

Like Scarlett & Fletcher they used him to zone off, doesn't make him any less effective.

Some games he virtually won for the Tiges by being an impassable wall.

Most likely get a job in acting. Best theatrical knee buckler ever.

The Tigers won a flag without him and will go close again. Wonder what the fin settlement is, as a good God fearing man I expect he has given up this year's payments.

Loved seeing Viney and Bernie just lay into him. Dog act.

But yes agree with others here. While I never loved his smugness and arrogance in the media he was a prolific backman. Hope he finds fulfillment with the god squad.

Actually disgusting listening to the commentators defend him " it so uncharacteristic" "that just a man who's tried he's hardest and its boiled over" what a cop out. If Bugg had done it they'd be calling for criminal charges.

Rance. Good player but [censored] of a bloke.

Our Robbo kicked 7 on Matthew Scarlett one day as well. Name one key defender that never got beaten.

Saying Rance can't defend one on one is a bit like saying Buddy is overrated because he's not the best overhead mark - doesn't mean he's not a bloody good player.

I don't like the way he staged for frees and dished out cheap shots now and then, but he is the best key defender of the last decade by a mile. Credit where it's due.

We'd all have loved him at the dees.

That was not only a dirty act, and an indicator of why Richmond went on to win so many games, but also one of the best few acts by a Melbourne player in defence of a teammate. It could be one of the few reasons why you would support JV as captain. But it certainly shows an important element of leadership.

Did well by the club retiring AFTER the draft....

Any reason given for the sudden retirement? Has he reinjured his ACL, for example? Although, if I recall correctly, didn't he nearly give the game away mid-career?

must say I thought the same thing but I will give him the benefit of the doubt in that it was only when he started pre-season that he realised his heart/body wasn't in it.

They just showed bits of his statement on the TV LDC. He feels it’s the right time to put more energy into other areas of his life that need it such as, spiritual growth, family and friends.

It will be interesting to see how much of an impact his absence will have. Yes, they did win the flag without him playing but he was still involved as a leader at the club and putting work into their VFL team.

I figured his ego wouldn't have liked seeing the Tigers win the flag without him last year.

very good defender but not in the greatest ever debate for me

Wouldn't have picked that of you, OD. What denomination? Our Brothers of the Perpetually Underachieving Weideman?

I see a fortunate resolution to this dilemma. In the very pages of the good book!

Verily, it is written: I say unto ye,  it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle, than for a rich man to enter into the kingdom of God.

Also it is written: thy pastor doth desire to driveth a fast car, so cougheth up

Maybe he'll go into writing full time. His two books to date have been big hits with 5 - 8 year old's and adult Richmond fans.

Broocy wil be utterly devastated.

Great player, ok bloke , ordinary actor.

Seriously though, good luck to him, big decision and i applaud it.

  • NON-MFC: 2026 Opening Round

Finally the 2026 AFL Premiership Season is upon us. While Melbourne sits out Opening Round, there is still plenty of footy to enjoy with five non-MFC clashes to kick off the new season. It all begins on Thursday night with a blockbuster at the SCG as Sydney hosts Carlton in what should be a strong early test for both sides. On Friday night, Gold Coast gets its chance to open the season in front of a home crowd when the Suns and Christian Petracca take on Geelong at People First Stadium. Saturday features a double-header, starting in the afternoon with Greater Western Sydney and Clayton Oliver meeting the Hawks at Engie Stadium. That is followed on Saturday night by Brisbane Lions hosting the Western Bulldogs at the Gabba, with the Lions embarking on their campaign to win the Threepeat. Opening Round wraps up on Sunday night at the MCG, where St Kilda takes on Collingwood in the only game in town in the first week of the season. There is no shortage of storylines across the round, so discuss all the action from the non-MFC games of Opening Round.

With just over two weeks until their opening match of the 2026 AFL Premiership season, the Demons are already well on the path to redemption and have the Saints firmly in their sights ahead of their mid-March clash at the MCG. What do you think the team will look like when they run out on to the G?

  • REPORT: Richmond

Mars is not usually a place known for lighting strikes but on Friday evening it happened twice in the vicinity of the stadium in Ballarat that carries the name and is a half completed building site with limited capacity for spectators.
