I don't know how a player who has played only 13 games can be so good in such a short time most coaches say that big men take a long time to become a player can you imagine what he will be like by seasons end if he stays healthy and when he is 25 he may the player Schwarz could have become if he did not do his knee 3 times.

I'll put my hand up and say I have been wrong about Jacko - well not necessarily wrong, I was just never as big on him as others and had my heart always set on Noah Anderson.

On here during his first year, I thought a few got a bit "fanboyish" every time he got near it and I still had my doubts after being burnt before with high draft picks.

Those doubts have definitely been put to bed now after that performance tonight and his season to date.  He's basically doubling his output from last year and showing some great signs moving around the oval.

He's a very exciting player and really could be anything!

When he was recruited by the club lot of experts said he was too small to be a AFL ruckman but he has proven them wrong and they may end up eating their words and change their minds that he should have been pick 1 not 3 like Dustin Martin?

He’s already the best “Luke Jackson” I’ve ever seen and will only get better.

Cool hand Luke.
Finally held his marks and kicked some goals.
Oozing class.
Amazing game tonight and so much to look forward to as he grown further in stature and confidence.
And Max must love him as a mobile jumping back up.  A great tandem.

Great game.

One thing I noticed tonight was his positioning at stoppages. He holds his position, doesn't get sucked up into the contest. Offers a release at the back or out the side.

He's getting better every week. The marking was better tonight but can still improve. His mobility and aerobic capacity make him a terror of a match up.

We've got a special one here.

Sure do Stoner. Ill also I suggest Jackson has an added edge with temperament and humility.

Not once, but twice he was at the end of a 'fast break' for a goal. Gets to so many contests for a ruckman he will be unstoppable in a few years time if not sooner

When Gawn was really starting to cement his place in the side, the one knock on his game was that he didn’t hold his marks enough. Max was about 23 at the time. That’s where Jackson is at now, at 19. He does all the hard work - just needs to hang on to them.

In the long run I reckon he’ll be a better player than Max and that’s a very high bar. He’s more athletically gifted than Max for starters. Hard to think of a more salivating talent on our list other than maybe Kozzy.

he's not a forward...he's not a ruck...he's not a midfielder...

he's a genuine utility and future superstar of the competition

reminds me of adam goodes

Yes that was my worry when we were going after him vs a genuine mid or say Young but he is proving to be that old style "flip him around anywhere utility" as you say WSW.  Albeit with about 5 inches on any of the old school traditional ones.

The key with a tall like this is what he does after the ball hits the deck in marking contests and/or ball ups/ins and he's proving to be very adept at this side.

Not sure he has the kicking boots to hold down a traditional key forward role but he's certainly a big asset to have when played like this.

My initial worries have proved to be completely unfounded and mis-guided.  A great pick up.

His best game last night and a very mature game also in such a block buster.

Impressive in many aspects.  The tank to seemingly be able to go for four quarters at this early stage....makes a huge difference and very hard to match up on.

The best aspect of his development is allows us to play an extra tall if we want. He plays better with the ball on the ground right now.

He isn’t clunking his marks but it’s more a timing thing rather than a confidence thing; if you are slightly off on confidence you tend to have rigid and tense arms and double grab even easy marks. Jackson’s misses just kind of slip out or through.

He won't be a better ruckman than Max, but he is a very talented player, and may well have a career that bests Max overall.  For those old enough to remember Peter Moore, that's the type of ruckman Jackson looks like becoming.  Great mobility, good pace for a big man, competitive in the air.  Moore was a great player, but not a great ruckman. Gawn is the best ruckman of his generation, in an era of outstanding ruckman (Grundy, Naitanui, Goldstein and Ryder are all AA players). Last night, against a very good opponent, Gawn had 16 hitouts (out of 30) to advantage.  That means that more than 50% of the time he won the hitout he put our midfield in an advantageous position.  Gawn is a superstar.  Jackson is doing a tremendous job giving a chop out to Max and he is competitive.

Another interesting stat from last night was that Jackson and Gawn combined for 40 disposals and 11 marks.  Gawn went at 82% DE and Jackson 100% DE.  This was on a night that traditionally wouldn't be considered a great night for big men. Team DE was 70% on the night.  By comparison, Salem went at 79%.

Does anyone else feel like Jackson's running gait looks identical to Naitanui's? They both seem to glide as they run.

But with more bounce, like a springbok.

UP IN LIGHTS by Whispering Jack

Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
