Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

Where do we get the picks from though?

Good question. Not sure.

There's today and tomorrow for player trades, and then pick swaps can be traded up to Nov 22 (and again on draft night). It's possible the first 15 picks might change in order up til then.

I like your thinking though.

If we dont take what we dont have and its available at 3 then we are silly. Young is the one we cant afford to miss out on a skillful and quick player. I will be really flat if we dont go with him.

There appears to be some very handy 'prospects' in the early parts of this draft.  We get a swing at two if we split but IF we do we more than likely miss Serong who looks likely to go early (3 or 4?).  'Appears' on paper to be exactly what we need on the small forward front but like most of these options i'm only going on scouting reports or highlight vids.

Lower down there still appears to be some juicy morsels presenting themselves.

This is just my take on some of the stand outs.

The number in parenthesis is the latest ranking of the draft prospect courtesy of https://afl.draftcentral.com.au/category/power-rankings/ effective as at 7 Oct.

Not splitting the pick

??  Caleb Serong, Gippsland Power (3) - Small forward / Mid  B'day 9/2/2001 , 178cm / 83kg

Splitting the pick interests, say 6 down assuming we land a 6 with a mid 20s (approx) and Green is off the table (GWS) and we aren't looking at Flanders (another inside Mid)...

??  Dylan Stephens, Norwood (8) - Balanced Mid.  B'day 8/1/2001 , 182cm / 70 kg (Silk & Speed!).

??  Miles Bergman, Sandringham Dragons (17) - Mid/Forward.  B'day 18/10/2001 , 188cm / 77kg (the next Howe or Birdman?  Likes a goal from anywhere apparently).

??  Cameron Taheny, Norwood (22) - Medium Forward.  B'day 3/8/2001 , 184cm / 80kg (probably too small for our needs and we have similar with Melk but guy can time his leads beautifully and a solid overhead mark.  Looks to be very accurate in front also!).

Smokey Replacements for missing Serong if we split assuming we are targeting a small forward...

??  Cody Weightman, Dandy Stingrays (28) - Small Forward , B'day 15/01/2001 , 177cm / 73kg

??  Trent Bianco,  Oakleigh Chargers Captain (14) - Outside Mid.  B'day 20/01/2001 , 176cm / 70kg.

P.S.  just saw the rumour on Norf giving us pick 8 for 26 and a first rounder from 2020.  If so...the ideal for me is Serong @ 3 & Stephens @ 8!!!

I would not trade those picks ... stay in the draft!

I love the idea of trading into the first round of this year draft. next years draft is compromised.

But why are giving up 26 and 50 as well? Seems lopsided. Surely we don’t give it all up for 8.

Pick swaps can occur up to draft day.

The fact this has been done already suggests either us or Norf are looking to trade picks for players.

True, but it also might just be so neither club gets cold feet. It's a brave trade for both clubs, best to do the deal now rather than agreeing now and waiting until draft night

massive overs for pick 8

Heavily compromised draft in 2020 so our first rounder then is probably worth 10 spots later than it actually falls.

so say it's 10 you're looking at it as 20, 26 and 50 for 8 in a MUCH stronger draft

It's certainly bold. but i've personally been keen on swapping our 2020 pick for something this year, just because next year is nearly a write off.

It's all relative.

If it's a weaker draft after the first 2, and picks 3 to 20-odd are about the same, then the draft drops off again and gets weaker... then have we really given away a lot by handing off 26 and 50? Especially if our 3rd pick is aimed at a late smoky.

And again, the first pick for next year, even if our eventual ladder position ends up making it pick 8 like this year, is actually worth less next year. Safe to say we wouldn't be getting the 8th best player in the draft in 2020.

And with the academy bidding, don't forget that it devalues early picks, but conversely increases the value of later picks, as picks in later rounds evaporate as points are needed for early bids. Suddenly pick 42 becomes pick 36, etc. If there really are that many academy selections, it could mean pick 42 becomes pick 30. Not a bad year to trade our way to the tail end of the draft.

    MELBOURNE BUSINESS by The Oracle

In days of old, this week’s Thursday night AFL match up between the Demons and the Blues would be framed on the basis of the need to redress the fact that Carlton “stole” last year’s semi final away from Melbourne and with it, their hopes for the premiership.  A hot gospelling coach might point out to his charges that they were the better team on the night in all facets and that poor kicking for goal and a couple of lapses at the death cost them what was rightfully theirs. Moreover, now was

UNDER THE PUMP by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons have been left languishing near the bottom of the VFL table after suffering a 32-point defeat at the hands of stand alone club Williamstown at Casey Fields on Sunday. The Demons suffered a major setback before the game even started when AFL listed players Ben Brown, Marty Hore and Josh Schache were withdrawn from the selected side. Only Schache was confirmed as an injury replacement, the other two held over as possible injury replacements for Melbourne’s Thursday night fixt

THE MEANING OF FOOTY by Whispering Jack

Throughout history various philosophers have grappled with the meaning of life. Aristotle, Aquinas, Kant, Nietzsche, Schopenhauer and a multitude of authors of diverse religious texts all tried. As society became more complex, the question became attached to specific endeavours in life even including sporting pursuits where such questions arose among our game’s commentariat as, “what is the meaning of football”? Melbourne coach Simon Goodwin must be tired of dealing with such a dilemma but,

LEADERS OF THE PACK by The Oracle

I was asked to write a preview of this week’s Round 8 match between Melbourne and Geelong. The two clubs have a history that goes right back to the time when the game was starting to become an organised sport but it’s the present that makes the task of previewing this contest so interesting. Both clubs recently reached the pinnacle of the competition winning premiership flags in 2021 and 2022 respectively, but before the start of this season, many good judges felt their time had passed - n
