Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

The 2019 Draft and Trade Targets Thread

Is this year’s pick untradeable? Or does that only apply to future picks?

We have to use a first round pick this year. The only way we are allowed to trade pick 2 is if we get back another first round pick and use that at draft instead.

It will be refreshing to see us drafting in the first round again. Last time we did was 2015 for Clarry and Weed, and our list has become unbalanced as a result.

We have to use a pick either this year OR next year. We can trade this year's one as long as we use next year's one.

It's a rolling 4 year period with the 'new' rule taking effect from 2020. It's a complicated messy situation, but the short story is we are allowed to trade a first round pick from either 2019 or 2020.

Edit - Adding link that might help explain...

Rolling 4 year period is very ambiguous. At least 1 1st round pick in the previous 4 drafts is a much simpler way to put it.

Yeah, it's bloody messy that's for sure. From the above article:

"Essendon is in a similar scenario to Hawthorn and Melbourne under the new trade conditions.

All three clubs drafted two players in the first round in 2015, but the Hawks and Demons haven't used one since and neither has one this year (2018).

They can do as they wish with their first-round pick in the 2019 NAB AFL Trade Period, including offloading a future one, because they have used at least two in the preceding four-year period.

However, like the Bombers, unless they trade in extra first-round selections this year or next, they will have to start using those picks in 2020 until they satisfy the four-year rolling requirement."

FWIW, I can't remember a year when those 'reports' haven't done the usual media rounds... not convinced we'll finish bottom two at any rate.

I’ll be furious if we finish second last, but GC get awarded priority pick and we then miss out on Anderson at pick 2. Would be a very MFC thing to occur.

Looking at our fixture, we’ll finish second last now. It’s a [censored] embarrassment and a pathetic effort for us to free fall to the bottom of the ladder. If we’re not competitive again next season then Goodwin definitely gets the chop. The only silver lining of this disastrous season is we can finish with pick 2 and draft Anderson. He looks a special talent and exactly what we need.

How would you feel if:

a) We traded the pick.

b) GC get a priority but have to trade it. They then trade it to WC for NicNat, then WC trade it for Kelly and Geelong end up with pick 2...

Once GC get a PP, Pandora’s box will re-open and clubs will start tanking again. If we suck again next year we better be asking for a PP

Just dwelling on Brodie Kemp's injury and potential slide.

Seems like a bit much to hope that he would now be available at our second round pick, but it does make me wonder if the possibility of him being around in the teens might make a pick-downgrade trade more appealing.

Naturally there's some hesitation about any kid with a long-term injury, especially when acceleration and agility are a feature of their game, but we aren't looking for more reliable blunt instruments, we're looking to add some really dangerous and creative types who can put oppositions off balance in amongst our usual midfield grind-grind-grind. You don't get that without taking risks.

There are a whole lot of players suitable for us but with some question mark on them. Byrnes, Sharp, Worrel (inj), Mahony, Bianco, Williams and now through injury to Kemp. Does anyone else feel like the 'place to be' in this draft, other than top-3, is in the early teens? Could make for some interesting upgrade/downgrade trades and even live trading on the night.

Kemp isn't slipping to the second round.

His injury isn't a long term concern. Only players with injuries of that matter would slip from a possible top-5 to 2nd round.

Years ago we traded away pick 2 and missed Josh Kelly.

If we do the same this year, history will repeat as Anderson is every bit as naturally gifted as Kelly. Do we really want to make that same mistake? No offense to Salem, but I’d rather a crack at a potential superstar than a average-good player again. Our list needs more young elite talent. We haven’t draft any elite young talent for 4 years now, they’ve all been battlers and role players.

No. He was the last elite talent we drafted, and that was 4 years ago. As I said, we haven’t drafted any elite talent since. We traded for some, and overpaid to our detriment in the process. We now have gaps in our list as a result.

Ken oath LT. Whilst we have a nucleus of very good young midfielders, still think we are 1 maybe 2 players away from being a premiership midfield unit.

they just can't give it. Lions didn't get it and it took years but finally they are a finals team.

They did dominate the super draft last year.

We went hard at the draft for 3 years in a row.

Brayshaw, Oliver, Petracca, Weideman all top 10 picks.

My view is if we end up with pick 2 we use it on Anderson or Rowell.

Anything above that I'd be looking at a pick swap option, for example: our first rounder plus second for Brad Hill & their first round pick.

I believe we need MEN not boys and EXPERIENCE in bucket loads and so with picks 2, 20, 38, 56 etc.....

Trade pick 2 (2517 points) to Lions for picks 16, 19 (2115 and either 44 worth 362 or Cutler, my preference)

16 For Jack Martin from Suns with something back in 3rd

19 for Zak Jones from Swans (or Papley) with something back in 3rd

20 for Ed Langdon  from Freo with something back in 3rd

Buy on the meat market..

Jamie Elliott from Pies $400k for 3 yrs

Thomlinson from Giants $600 k for 5 yrs ( or Patton from Giants for crumbs)

Dan Butler from Tigers for 38

Alex Keith from Crows for two 3rd rounders or Stretch and ANB

Go to draft with 48, 59, 77,

2020 round one..

Jetta May Lever

Frost Keath Salem

Langdon Z Jones Thomlinson

Martin TMac Melksham

Fritsch Weed Elliott

Gawn Viney Oliver

Bench... from N Jones, Butler, Trac, Harmes, Hibberd, Hunt, Hore, AVB, J Smith, Petty, Hannan, OMac.....

Gone... ANB, Stretch, JKH, Lewis, Garlett, J Wags, KK

I like the effort put in, but what makes you think Gold Coast will rade Jack Martin for pick 16? He is worth a pick around 10, so it would be unlikely they accept that.

Zak Jones and Langdon is definetly realistic.

    MELBOURNE BUSINESS by The Oracle

In days of old, this week’s Thursday night AFL match up between the Demons and the Blues would be framed on the basis of the need to redress the fact that Carlton “stole” last year’s semi final away from Melbourne and with it, their hopes for the premiership.  A hot gospelling coach might point out to his charges that they were the better team on the night in all facets and that poor kicking for goal and a couple of lapses at the death cost them what was rightfully theirs. Moreover, now was

The Casey Demons have been left languishing near the bottom of the VFL table after suffering a 32-point defeat at the hands of stand alone club Williamstown at Casey Fields on Sunday. The Demons suffered a major setback before the game even started when AFL listed players Ben Brown, Marty Hore and Josh Schache were withdrawn from the selected side. Only Schache was confirmed as an injury replacement, the other two held over as possible injury replacements for Melbourne’s Thursday night fixt

THE MEANING OF FOOTY by Whispering Jack

Throughout history various philosophers have grappled with the meaning of life. Aristotle, Aquinas, Kant, Nietzsche, Schopenhauer and a multitude of authors of diverse religious texts all tried. As society became more complex, the question became attached to specific endeavours in life even including sporting pursuits where such questions arose among our game’s commentariat as, “what is the meaning of football”? Melbourne coach Simon Goodwin must be tired of dealing with such a dilemma but,

The two clubs have a history that goes right back to the time when the game was starting to become an organised sport but it’s the present that makes the task of previewing this contest so interesting. Both clubs recently reached the pinnacle of the competition winning premiership flags in 2021 and 2022 respectively, but before the start of this season, many good judges felt their time had passed - n
