god i hope not

love the idea of an in-form and switched-on garlett being in the side, and i really like what lockhart offered in his first two games at afl level, so...

IN: lockhart, garlett, jetta
OUT: spargo, c wagner, j wagner

B: Jetta - Frost - Hore
HB: Salem - O Mac - Hibberd
? Harmes - Jones - Brayshaw
HF: Petracca - T Mac - Hunt
F: Preuss - Weideman - Melksham
Foll: Gawn - Oliver - Viney
I/c: Stretch - Fritsch - Garlett - Lockhart
Emerg: Spargo - Petty - C Wagner - J Wagner

ostensible best squad currently injured: may, lewis, lever, kolodjashnij, hannan, vandenberg, j smith (also jkh, who is probably in that 28-32nd player on the list)

Why would our captains need a rest 4 games in to the season?

There are some questions you would think you wouldn't have to ask on Demonland.

The above is one of them, Nash. Very strange suggestion to rest the captains.

Lewy is available this week  believe.

Could  he kept for Tigers 4 days later?

It would be interesting to know how the club are approaching this patch of footy, in terms of managing loads leading into the ‘double header’.  I wonder if we will be selecting essentially for both games and managing loads and training across the week accordingly (group 1, both games, managed right through, group 2, Saints game, early week load, group 3, Tigers, late week load, etc).

I also wonder whether this patch was somehow on the minds of the conditioning staff in the lead into the season?  Perhaps the ‘load’ of these two games somehow influenced the preparation, which we then saw in weeks 1-3? They have looked underdone up to the Swans game.

We are definitely not travelling well enough atm to play anything less than best 22 available each week

We are 1-3 and hardly setting the world on fire - this week will be a massive challenge imo - the saints made us look pretty ordinary last year at the G and they will not be easy and should go into this weeks game as clear favourites

We need to get cracking and string some wins together otherwise finals will not be happening

Lewis could be back this week and could have played against Sydney but precaution took precedence . Although he is getting on he has been missed and still has plenty to offer. Lewy is the General in the back half and will launch our attacking moves.

I like to see Jeffy for pressure and speed in  playing up forward and his goal sense.

IN Lewis and Garlett.  .... need the experience and the know how in the coming weeks.

OUT ?????????????          I feel for whoever is out  this week.

Good comment buck. At some point, and maybe coming soon, there is going to have to be a decision on whether to play Oliver. The midfields are going to have to be ready with plans B C and D especially outside Mids.

Exactly we should and will not play around with changes just because it is a short turn around from Saints to Tigers. We must play our best, fittest available and if that means Jones and Viney play both if fit. You do not play around with the side when we have only won one game. We need our best firing for both these and get back to the pack.

As Casey have a bye I wonder if the club will organise a practice match for them.  Then Lewis and May can have a game-type run as they have had next to nil game time in the last month.  (Jones, Viney and Melksham played Casey practice matches just before the season proper).

Also a good chance to have another look at Garlett and others, maybe KK if over concussion.

Just a few quarters each and modify their training and have them all cherry ripe for ANZAC Day.

More generally, we play 3 games over a 13 day period which is similar to playing 3 games with 2 consequtive 6-day beaks.  Our fitness staff are used to this sort of stuff.  Didn't we have 3 or 4 consequtive 6 day breaks with interstate trips in the middle of 2017?

Lots of options available to the club so I don't see the 4 day break as a problem especially as we have an extra 2.5 days extra rest than Rich this week and they also play ANZAC Eve off 4-day break.

They need to manage the return of Houli, Cotchin, Dusty and Riewoldt if they are to play ANZAC Eve.  So their player management issues are similar to ours.

So ANZAC Eve will be a level playing field.

Just to note:  After ANZAC Eve we have a 10 day break so plenty of recovery time before playing the Hawks who have a 6 day break.  So we are doing ok with time between games.

we certainly don't have the necessary depth to manage players. Both are must win games. Perhaps Keilty for Preuss in one game and Garlett for Spargo in another but it's margins stuff.

Just kick20 goals against the saints in the first half and cost for the second.. easy isn't it !!

The reality is that our game plan works against us in situations such as this.

Would have liked to see KK at Casey and then dependent on form play him against Richmond but that grrrrrrrrrr bye at VFL level prevents that

When teams like GC are winning games early in the season, it's a possible sign that some teams are ahead of their counterparts in fitness, dietary specifics and ball handling. I think that St Kilda also are in this category. If anyone has info on these type of training methods, i would be interested to hear about it. Having said that this upcoming game could be quite entertaining.

It's also possible that GC might be winning games because they've finally got players who want to play for the club rather than quit at the first opportunity.

I'm not being critical of those who chose to leave, but it must be a much happier place at the moment.

Yes you can see the urgency that disappeared for quite a few years and has noticeably returned. Even raw emotion...

For the Saints name the best 22 available and hit them hard.

For the Tiges, assess the aches and pains from the Saints game and look at who is available for the match and put together the best side available.

With a bit of luck we have the game in hand early with the Saints and we can 'rest' a couple of key players for the last quarter and have them a little fresher for a few days later. We do get an additional 3hrs recovery time than the Tiges and I hope they have a tough hard match against the Swannies the Saturday before.

There are 168 hours in a week* of which game time is about 2.5. You'd think that the remaining 165.5 hours would be sufficient time for any player to rest. But, clubs "rest" players all the time, so clearly the effects of a single game are significant. However, I can't see how any player should need a "rest" after only four games. If he's injured, don't play him; if he's just out of form, decide whether he needs more game time to recover touch or whether he needs to drop back to Casey for a while. For what it's worth, in my view he's playing OK. Not AA form that he's capable of, but not worthy of demoting, either.

*Note: 168 hours is a normal week. Six day breaks, etc, stuff up the maths.

Sure, but he looked cooked. So when I say rest, I really mean, build his fitness up. Marty Hore got into position so many more times than Hibbo did. Don’t get me wrong, I love the guy, but he’s best able to two-way rum when he’s fully fit.

Historically, how has Jeffy fared against the ‘aints? (For someone more statistically minded than me)

Over his career, both with us and the Blues, he has played St. Kilda 15 times and kicked 23.12.

Edit - he has kicked 8 goals in 6 games against the Saints for us.  Not terrific numbers.

    EASYBEATS by Meggs

A beautiful sunny Friday afternoon, with a light breeze and a strong Windy Hill crowd set the scene, inviting one team to seize the day and take the important four points on offer. For the Demons it was not a good Friday, easily beaten by an all-time largest losing margin of 65 points.   Essendon threw themselves into action today, winning most of the contests and had three early goals with Daria Bannister on fire.  In contrast the Demons were dropping marks, hesitant in close and comm

    DEFUSE THE BOMBERS by Meggs

Last Saturday’s crushing loss to Fremantle, after being three goals ahead at three quarter time, should be motivation enough to bounce back for this very winnable Round 5 clash at Windy Hill. A first-time venue for the Melbourne AFLW team, this should be a familiar suburban, windy, footy environment for the players.   Essendon were brave and competitive last week against ladder leader Adelaide at Sturt’s home ground. A familiar name, Maddison Gay, was the Bombers best player with

    BLOW THE SIREN by Meggs

Fremantle hosted the Demons on a sunny 20-degree Saturdayafternoon winning the toss and electing to defend in the first quarter against the 3-goal breeze favouring the Parry Street end. There was method here, as this would give the comeback queens, the Dockers, last use of the breeze. The Melbourne Coach had promised an improved performance, and we did start better than previous weeks, winning the ball out of the middle, using the breeze advantage and connecting to the forwards.

    GETAWAY by Meggs

Calling all fit players. Expect every available Melbourne player to board the Virgin cross-continent flight to Perth for this Round 4 clash on Saturday afternoon at Fremantle Oval. It promises to be keenly contested, though Fremantle is the bookies clear favourite.  If we lose, finals could be remoter than Rottnest Island especially following on from the Dees 50-point dismantlement by North Melbourne last Sunday.  There are 8 remaining matches, over the next 7 weeks.  To Meggs’

    DRUBBING by Meggs

With Casey Fields basking in sunshine, an enthusiastic throng of young Demons fans formed a guard of honour for the evergreen and much admired 75-gamer Paxy Paxman. As the home team ran out to play, Paxy’s banner promised that the Demons would bounce back from last week’s loss to Brisbane and reign supreme.   Disappointingly, the Kangaroos dominated the match to win by 50 points, but our Paxy certainly did her bit.  She was clearly our best player, sweeping well in defence.

    GARNER STRENGTH by Meggs

In keeping with our tough draw theme, Week 3 sees Melbourne take on flag favourites, North Melbourne, at Casey Fields this Sunday at 1:05pm.  The weather forecast looks dry, a coolish 14 degrees and will be characteristically gusty.  Remember when Casey Fields was considered our fortress?  The Demons have lost two of their past three matches at the Field of Dreams, so opposition teams commute down the Princes Highway with more optimism these days.  The Dees held the highe

    ALLY’S FIELDS by Meggs

It was a sunny morning at Casey Fields, as Demon supporters young and old formed a guard of honour for fan favourite and 50-gamer Alyssa Bannan.  Banno’s banner stated the speedster was the ‘fastest 50 games’ by an AFLW player ever.   For Dees supporters, today was not our day and unfortunately not for Banno either. A couple of opportunities emerged for our number 6 but alas there was no sizzle.   Brisbane atoned for last week’s record loss to North Melbourne, comprehensively out

    GOOD MORNING by Meggs

If you are driving or training it to Cranbourne on Saturday, don’t forget to set your alarm clock. The Melbourne Demons play the reigning premiers Brisbane Lions at Casey Fields this Saturday, with the bounce of the ball at 11:05am.  Yes, that’s AM.   The AFLW fixture shows deference to the AFL men’s finals games.  So, for the men it’s good afternoon and good evening and for the women it’s good morning.     The Lions were wounded last week by 44 points, their highest ever los

    HORE ON FIRE by Meggs

The 40,000 seat $319 million redeveloped Kardinia Park Stadium was nowhere near capacity last night but the strong, noisy contingent of Melbourne supporters led by the DeeArmy journeyed to Geelong to witness a high-quality battle between two of the best teams in AFLW.   The Cats entered the arena to the blasting sounds of Zombie Nation and made a hot start kicking the first 2 goals. They brought tremendous forward half pressure, and our newly renovated defensive unit looked shaky.
