Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

Also if we do appeal i believe the rules have changed so that May does not risk a longer suspension but instead the club have to pay a fine in the event we are unsuccessful.

If there is no risk to the Geelong game in rd 2 then we have to appeal.

Stupid act....but not worthy of a week.

20 years ago berry would have braced and got back up. They (the afl) want free flowing footy from yester year, with that, i would like the bump back from yester year (albeit legal hard hits not to the head)

the risk i think is coffing up $10k for appeal

Exactly what I thought, it also seemed a long time to allow berry to avoid may, I mean why should may get done for Berry's lack of awareness, may was stationary berry was moving, may is allowed to hold his ground and brace for impact.

It's a ridiculous suspension but all those saying May was stationary are blind. He clear moved towards Berry to initiate contact with him. Shouldn't get suspended due to the minimal impact but he definitely initiated contact

Anyone bracing themselves will lean forward.

The Brisbane player is clearly negligent to his own position and awareness.

Many people seem to forget what its like to be hit up and down when you arent braced against someone leaning into it.

Id say many dont remember or (more likely) just dont know. He got him a good one.

Very good chance of AFL making a martyr here and a possible 2 weeks if we go on to appeal.

I also thought Clarry was lucky to escape with a fine after what AFL had said about punches to the gut.

No doubt he got him a good one, but was it high?  I don't think so.  You could argue he was winded more than anything as he got up and jogged off the ground.

Getting up and jogging off doesnt really mean much in my experience. In my day there was no concussion test.

I understand it was a true story that a tall Richmond forward came off wobbly after being lined up and Slug Jordan said to Tommy, he doesnt know who he is. Tommy said "Tell him he is Royce Hart and put him at centre half forward".

May can be a gorilla ( bless his little heart )

We know he can inflict hurt ( see above )

This wasn't that. He stood his ground.

If this club has any gonads it will too and back the player.

Otherwise...what are we

Come on 'bub'...the Brisbane player wasn't negligent, he just didn't expect May to be so stupid.

It was a dumb act, a bit of a brain fade.

...but as 'Gonzo' said, minimal impact. A fine and move on.

Sigh.

I hate the stupid off the ball bumps and sniping, but this was a 20-times-a-game shephard that just happend to hit awkwardly.

I don't see how a near-stationary player turning their body to receive the contact of someone running right at them (even if the opponent was just running stupidly rather than intentionally) can be a suspension offence.

you cant be serious. may clearly stepped into him to bump him. and he got him high.

you could argue low contact but he flushed him pretty damn well

Agree. May has a history of intentionally  bumping. Wasn't a smart thing to do in a preseason game at a new club arguably on big coin.

He got him flush on the chin with the point of his shoulder

Actually you aren't allowed to do that at all. You are allowed to bump if the ball is within 5m but they cracked down on taking out a player that does the old give and go.

I’m not saying taking someone out intentionally. You can stand in their path and block their run. That’s all May was doing. He stood his ground and braced for contact. Berry did nothing at all to move out of the way of where May was standing. May turned to brace for contact and that’s it. You can see after contact, the momentum of May’s body went backward. If May had’ve lined him up and had his body weight going toward Berry, May would’ve end up standing over Berry or even falling over Berry after contact.

Even Goodwin said he expected May to be right for round one. So I’m and many others on here are not the only ones to be slightly miffed about the decision.

Y’know.... it’s really not the fact that May got 1 week for this that bothers me.

It’s that I am certain that in 5 to 6 rounds time this will not be applied to the same standard of consistency and the AFL will just ignore the difference.

Exactly. It will be interesting to see if they apply the same criteria to a favourite player at another club, or a Brownlow favourite if he does a similar bump. Or will he be praised for being a hard player at the ball?

lol fancy the coach expecting his player to get off.

May knew he was bumping. Gee, we weren't born yesterday!

Coaches know when a player is in trouble but Goodwin was confident about May having nothing to answer for.

Difference between bumping and bracing. If May was bumping, Berry wouldn’t have woken up yet.

Also, play it at normal speed. 2 Brisbane boys offered token and very short-lived objections, no free kick awarded...

And May’s right foot seems to be planted firmly on the ground at the point of impact.

LEADERS OF THE PACK by The Oracle

I was asked to write a preview of this week’s Round 8 match between Melbourne and Geelong. The two clubs have a history that goes right back to the time when the game was starting to become an organised sport but it’s the present that makes the task of previewing this contest so interesting. Both clubs recently reached the pinnacle of the competition winning premiership flags in 2021 and 2022 respectively, but before the start of this season, many good judges felt their time had passed - n

    TRAINING: Monday 29th April 2024

Demonland Trackwatcher Kev Martin was on hand at Gosch's Paddock for Monday's training session and made the following observations. About 38 to 40  players down at training.  BBB walking laps.  Charlie Spargo still in rehab, doing short run throughs.  Christian Salem has full kit on and doing individual work with a trainer. He is is starting to get into some sprints. I cannot see Andy Moniz-Wakefield out there. Jack Viney and Kade Chandler have broken away from the

    DISCO INFERNO by Whispering Jack

Two weeks ago, when the curtain came down on Melbourne’s game against the Brisbane Lions, the team trudged off the MCG looking tired and despondent at the end of a tough run of games played in quick succession. In the days that followed, the fans wanted answers about their team’s lamentable performance that night and foremost among their concerns was whether the loss was a one off result of fatigue or was it due to other factor(s) of far greater consequence.  As it turns out, the answer to

TIGERS PUNT CASEY by KC from Casey

The afternoon atmosphere at the Swinburne Centre was somewhat surreal as the game between Richmond VFL and the Casey Demons unfolded on what was really a normal work day for most Melburnians. The Yarra Park precinct marched to the rhythm of city life, the trains rolled by, pedestrians walked by with their dogs and the traffic on Punt Road and Brunton Avenue swirled past while inside the arena, a football battle ensued. And what a battle it was? The Tigers came in with a record of two wins f
