Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

Interesting concept.... so we wait until Gaff nominates his club and then WC can match and then if the nominated club still wants him you trade.

No thanks ....the only trade we would consider that WC would be interested in would probably be Weideman. Given that Gaff is an RFA it just doesn't make sense to trade a top 22 player and it's not as though they are queuing up at Casey. Stretch maybe.

Fascinating

PS: I did not realise that WC would then lose it's compensatory pick..... Which of course is not worth as much to a top club... (doubly fascinating)

Keep the Weed they can have JKH & an a box of chocolates

Not if the Eagles match any clubs offer it isn’t. Remember he’s restricted.

The Frenchman hasn't got long to go, the way the games going you can't have enough good small goal sneaks.

I like Kent in our forward line tho.

But if they match the offer they lose their compo and would want something as good as Gaff. That is where the attraction would be lost.

Rioli and Ryan are good players close to goal and Cripps is a very decent defensive forward, but they do need some upgrades through half forward - replacing LeCras - depending on how confident they are with the likes of Waterman and Venables. More than anything I would've thought they need Gaff's outside run to compliment Shuey, Redden and Yeo. Sheed and Masten as the outside ball winners is no better than us using Jones and Tyson in those roles.

I've always thought Kent's best footy is played as an attacking link player, not close to goal, so maybe the Eagles have belief he can do that for them. Either way, he'd only be a very small trade, he has little value as is.

It's hard to see a player we'd give up who has enough trade value to really entice the Eagles in to keeping the compensation and not matching the deal. Our best chance there is that the Eagles are fearful that we'd call their bluff if they matched the deal and to be honest I think that's not unreasonable. Their salary cap probably can't afford a huge Gaff contract and they know we have limited draft capital to trade.

Exactly.

With McGovern resigning WCE may not be in a position to match a huge offer.  Darling, Kennedy, NicNat as well as signings like Redden and Jetta would all be taking up a lot of cap space.  They’ll need him to re-sign for quite a bit less than market value as they’ll struggle to ‘match’ it.

Rumour has it WCE have offered 6 x $850,000, naturally I'm unsure if true.

NM have apparently offered 7 x $1.2m

not quite they would want something/ someone better than the comp they would be offered.

I think the comp is at best pick 18 assuming they finish 17... so call it a very high second rounder.

Other than Weideman I can't see anyone in that category that we and WC would even consider. Salem could be a possibility but hell I would hate to lose him.

Never realised it till now but the free agency system does in a madly perverse way favour the top teams both coming and "going".

So are you thinking if we do get him it will be a very sizeable salary that gets it done?

We have some potential bait like Kent as a player but then our first round pick this year is the at the Crows and I very much doubt we'll want to trade out a first rounder 3 years running so it begs the question if Kent and a second + third round or something else is enough?

Essendon are in a similar position to us after bringing in the all of Smith, Stringer and Saad last year.

The only way I can see this happening is by blowing the Eagles out of the park with money. In which case all we need to do is pay more than Essendon if I'm reading this right?

it all really depends if gaff wants to come to the dees

nothing happens until gaff  nominates his club of choice, it's not an auction as such

of course the  $$$s will form part of his decision making but there are other considerations. wherever he goes (or stays) he will be getting big money

if he nominates us then the best deal wc can get is the afl compo and as others have pointed out that may be good enough for them to get kelly from the cattery

Gaff may have nominated Melbourne as his club of choice. That would throw pressure on WC to deal or accept whatever compensation they get.

Gaff may not want to play for North. Some players prefer a good work environment to silly money.

I'm sure the figures have to go through the AFL and they need to be assured that WC and the offeror can both fit the player within the salary cap.... this isn't bluff poker ( I hope)

It could depend on where they finish, clearly Gaff will get them band 1, so if they end up in the grand final they'll get pick 20/21, with other free agent moves. Whereas if they bomb out in straight sets this could be pick 16/17, if he wants to go to Essendon then trying to get pick 9/10 out of them and a player might be easily accepted.

If he wanted to come to us then they'd have to decide if it's worth just taking a pick between 16-21 or trying to force a trade for players plus lower picks this year or a first rounder next year (which will be in that band anyway), might all depend on what their thoughts are around needing to fill his gap this draft or wait until the year after.

My understanding is the AFL can give a compo pick anywhere. It could be after their first pick, say 20 or 21, or they could just say mid 1st round, which would be about 9 or 10.

Find that hard to believe.. thats an insane offer.

If it is true he will 100% be going to North.

North are desperate, didnt they offer Dusty and Josh Kelly astronomical amounts last year? And Polec $750,000 this year. We'll soon soon what his values are, if it's cash then good thing he doesn't come but it's his job and future also.

Let's throw in some other factors though they may mean little.

Gaff was a Dees fan.

Dees are on the up with a talented young squad.

He would automatically be our best outside mid.

If he played 100 games with us and had a son who was good enough, the son would be eligible to play in his home state with Dad's club.

Life membership of the MCC .

Play most games on the G.

Promise of good employment after footy with one of our financially strong supporters.

Good contract, though not the best available, but enough to make him financially secure.

He want's Redleg and his family cheering for him.

Polec is worth no more than $600000. He is not as good a player as Angus Brayshaw.

If Norf sign up players like Gaff for 1.2 and Polec for $800000, then how will they keep quality players like Cunnington, who will want their fair share?

Jed Anderson is yet to recommit to Norf. Played 20 games and has done quite well this year. Might get squeezed out.

If I was West Coast and Gaff nominated MFC I'd match and request a tall in trade.  Kennedy is close to retirement age and McGovern can play forward or back.  I think OMac, Frost and Weed would be in play if it was me.

    DISCO INFERNO by Whispering Jack

Two weeks ago, when the curtain came down on Melbourne’s game against the Brisbane Lions, the team trudged off the MCG looking tired and despondent at the end of a tough run of games played in quick succession. In the days that followed, the fans wanted answers about their team’s lamentable performance that night and foremost among their concerns was whether the loss was a one off result of fatigue or was it due to other factor(s) of far greater consequence.  As it turns out, the answer to

TIGERS PUNT CASEY by KC from Casey

The afternoon atmosphere at the Swinburne Centre was somewhat surreal as the game between Richmond VFL and the Casey Demons unfolded on what was really a normal work day for most Melburnians. The Yarra Park precinct marched to the rhythm of city life, the trains rolled by, pedestrians walked by with their dogs and the traffic on Punt Road and Brunton Avenue swirled past while inside the arena, a football battle ensued. And what a battle it was? The Tigers came in with a record of two wins f

It's Game Day and the Demons once again open the round of football with their annual clash against Richmond on ANZAC Eve. The Tigers, coached by former Dees champion and Premiership assistant coach Adem Yze have a plethora of stars missing due to injury but beware the wounded Tiger. The Dees will have to be switched on tonight. A win will keep them in the hunt for the Top 4 whilst a loss could see them fall out of the 8 for the first time since 2020.

There’s a touch of irony in the fact that Adem Yze played his first game for Melbourne in Round 13, 1995 against the club he now coaches. For that game, he wore the number 44 guernsey and got six touches in a game the team won by 11 points.  The man whose first name was often misspelled, soon changed to the number 13 and it turned out lucky for him. He became a highly revered Demon with a record of 271 games during which his presence was acknowledged by the fans with the chant of “Oozee” wh
