We’re paying how much money for a bloke that can’t deal with Tom Hawkins? Come off it...

What’s money got to do with it?? They recruited him as an intercept backmen not someone who can play on Hawkins

For what it's worth, these are Wagner's stats compared to Neville Jetta's for last year: (Not a whole lot of difference, to be honest - I thought he was a lot worse...)

Not sure why you would compare the stats of a lock down defender against an attacking one. Different roles. I like Wagner but it really highlights how far he needs to improve.

Im sure the coaches have their reasons but I cant understand why Maynard over Tyson .

Brayshaw must be sore so ok get that but Maynard hasnt shown anything and probably needed to attack things harder in the jlt if thats his go .

I do not mind the bench selections. I like Maynard in, I think he is going to develop well and it will be interesting to see how he goes after the off season development. Wagner selection is obviously contentious but it may be that the coaching panel have a very clearly defined role for him to play in the game against Geelong. I look forward to seeing how this unfolds on  Sunday.

Melksham's selection, of course, there is no argument with.

With Hannan, I can see a purpose in the selection but would have gone with either Brayshaw (if his teeth allow) or Tyson (if he is fully match fit) in his place as I think it would give a bit more flexibility. Mind you, both of these have been named as emergencies so I would assume they are game ready.

Christ I hate watching Wagner play, waiting for the inevitable turnover because of zero situational awareness.

Mystified.

Players improve, give the kid a chance.

I remember Jones in his first 5 years use to turn it over more than anyone.

Ive been confused about this bloke in particular since his first game, and as much as I look for positives regarding development, I just cant see anything in Wagner. I don't understand his selection at all.

Round one you need 100% fit and ready players. Tyson hasn’t played since his injury and Gus had his Op a few days ago.

Whats the big surprise?

if Wagner gets a run of 10+ games without injury he will surprise a few around here

Yep, spot on. Goody has said he will pick his fittest side. And why not? You have near a full list at this time of year and players always blow up in the first few rounds.

Tyson not fully fit or gus after surgery. Logical to leave them out.

Maynard and wagner on the other hand have had perfect ore seasons and both are cherry ripe.

And the coach loves both wagner and maynard.

By the by i really rate wagner and agree he might surprise some if he can get a run of games together. He's a really good kick who when down on confidence makes some bad mistakes. Will be damaging if he gets a good block of games

Why is Wagner in? His selection makes about as much sense as nothing.

Goody wants to find out whether we have the depth we think we have, or not.

If you can train the house down in summer, you get a gig in autumn. All turnovers under pressure are just part of development.

Why is Tyson as emergency a surprise?  Many on here have said for some time that we won’t be a serious competitor until players with the limitations of Tyson’s disposal & one-sidedness and Bugg’s disposal, particularly goal conversion are seen as simply depth players.

What’s money got to do with it?? He’s close to our highest paid player on the list. He’s tall. Plays in the backline. I’d expect him to be able to handle any forward in the comp.

Don’t be so naive.

So because he is on big money, he should be able to play every role in a team.

May as well take Gawns spot then

Agree with those that suggest the final Rd1 team reflects the fittest available - not necessarily a ‘best 22’.

After watching last nights game I can understand why - given the intensity of the match.

But at the same time we’ve kept in 2 players that probably need the extra time and ‘step’ with the footy more than most in our squad. They both might get there one day but they lack the experience and in some ways, natural ability of those left out.

Interesting call but I hope it pays off. Don’t really trust either of them with ball in hand so the final selections have made me a little worried!

We are supposed to have another "tall" in the backline.

Interesting how he seems to miracously side steps any form of objective scrutiny. Lever now covering his back and copping flak for doing it as well.

Hawkins will kick 4.4 and one or two out on the full. Lucky for the unnamed backman Tom can't kick.

Reminds me of the start of last season where we lost games at the selection table.

Wagner is a liability. He misses tackles and turns it over too often.

I also question how we're going to curb the strength of Hawkins. I don't think O.Mc can take him, and Lever will be best when given more opportunity to leave his man to intercept. Frost over Wagner would have been a much better option.

Maynard over Brayshaw and Tyson is question. But so are the selections of Lewis and Vince. Those two need to be accountable for their actions and be placed under the microscope this year; I'm sick of their instant and free selection.

Because Maynard has more potential upside than TS Tyson?  And will probably be asked to work the inside a little more with Viney out to assist the likes of Jones & Clarry.  Early days for Maynard so will need more than one match before judging however.  Hope he gets a good 3 games to settle before being cut too early.

I'm not going to neg any Rd. 1 selections for fear of being proven wrong on Sunday and there's still so many unknowns that come with a new season.

To suggest that Tyson's exclusion is related to a camp which was meant to take place in December, and it now being March is fanciful. Have his training standards not been up to scratch since then? I have no idea. But often the most plausible explanation is the correct one - he strained his calf only a few weeks ago and he's loads were scaled down for a period and he'll be cherry ripe by Easter.

Also, typical from MFC Media - that video told me nothing I didn't already know.

Don't forget Tyson had a limited preseason and Wagner has Impressed a lot so the coaches will give him a few chances

He must be burning up the track because any time he's played an actual game he hasn't been much chop.

Didn't Tyson play JLT vs Saints? Could be mistaken but I thought he did.

OVER YET? by KC from Casey

The Friday evening rush hour clash of two of the VFL’s 2024 minnows, Carlton and the Casey Demons was excruciatingly painful to watch, even if it was for the most part a close encounter. I suppose that since the game had to produce a result (a tie would have done the game some justice), the four points that went to Casey with the win, were fully justified because they went to the best team. In that respect, my opinion is based on the fact that the Blues were a lopsided combination that had

Our game is one where the result is often decided by centimetres; the touch of a fingernail, a split-second decision made by a player or official, the angle of vision or the random movement of an oblong ball in flight or in its bounce and trajectory. There is one habit that Melbourne seems to have developed of late in its games against Carlton which is that the Demons keep finding themselves on the wrong end of the stick in terms of the fine line in close games at times when centimetres mak

    MELBOURNE BUSINESS by The Oracle

In days of old, this week’s Thursday night AFL match up between the Demons and the Blues would be framed on the basis of the need to redress the fact that Carlton “stole” last year’s semi final away from Melbourne and with it, their hopes for the premiership.  A hot gospelling coach might point out to his charges that they were the better team on the night in all facets and that poor kicking for goal and a couple of lapses at the death cost them what was rightfully theirs. Moreover, now was

The Casey Demons have been left languishing near the bottom of the VFL table after suffering a 32-point defeat at the hands of stand alone club Williamstown at Casey Fields on Sunday. The Demons suffered a major setback before the game even started when AFL listed players Ben Brown, Marty Hore and Josh Schache were withdrawn from the selected side. Only Schache was confirmed as an injury replacement, the other two held over as possible injury replacements for Melbourne’s Thursday night fixt
