Don't forget Tyson had a limited preseason and Wagner has Impressed a lot so the coaches will give him a few chances

A limited pre-season?

I'm pretty sure he's done 90% of the pre-season and had a little hiccup before the first JLT game, that being a calf strain.

He then played JLT 2 against the Saints and a full game for Casey the weekend afterward.

Tyson was left out because of form, not because he's underdone.

It's amusing that posters are trying to convince themselves otherwise.

in J Wagner.... it appears Demonland has settled on its new whipping boy in the absence of JW.

must be a JW initials thing... while there's a JW on the list the ghosts of Watts past will remain.....

poor Vargner....

Good luck to Wagner and the boys.

A lot of complaints and a bit of a surprise, but he's done nothing wrong in the preseason.

Good to have competition for spos

Going to be a great game, I’m feeling really optimistic by the end of the game we will be in front - not sure I like Cats set-up but they would know more about it than me.

Obviously I hope we win by 60 points - but at the end of the day a win is a win. Really looking forward to Lever and Fritsch first game, think both can make a huge contribution to our club - l love quality changes like this.

Go Dees

Best 17 picked. Minus Viney t.mcd Tyson Brayshaw Frost.

ANB and Pedersen cover well for mid and tall fwd due to Viney and Mcd

not sure why Maynard Hannan Wagner are better than Brayshaw Tyson Frost

Frost on Hawkins was obvious ... tomahawk could monster o.mcd or lever

need Lever as floating defender not a full back on Hawkins

Who's going to kick Geelong's goals ?

I know Hawkins has a good record against us and Menzel will bob up, but who else ?  Ablett ?

Dangerfield kicked 45 last year and won't play.  Taylor kicked 22, but will be down back.  Motlop kicked 22 and has departed.

Dees by 28.

Someone will.

And yes, Ablett will probably kick 4.

Sorry Jako, l suspect this JW won't be on the park often enough to gain the mantle if whipping boy.

I like Josh, but he was a mature age recruit taken as a depth player. That is probably what he is. A good 25th or 26th player to have on a list.

Like all AFL listed players, he brings some genuine talent. Unfortunately his disposal skills very often let him down.

I wish him well on Sunday, l hope he kills them. I hope we kill them. But not betting on it.

A true whipping boy cops crap for everything they do whether it be good or bad. Josh will never come close to the previous JW.

It's great to have the footy back. I didn't realise how much l missed this real time wit before a real time game.

“Whipping boy” & “tall poppy syndrome” maybe are ingrained in our culture.

That is my concern, though predicted wind and rain could change it. Frost not only has the body to compete with Hawkins,  but  is so much faster than him, he could run off him and set up play. While I am an Oscar fan, I don't think he can do that.

Assuming Brayshaw with teeth and since he didn't train parts of week would make sense. You could also consider he was poor in JLT 1 and good in JLT 2. Does being half good get you in our team these days?

Maynard over Tyson I think is more about providing us an option to play a defensive role on Selwood or GAJ if necessary without Viney. The only other option is Vince but you need multiple plans. A lot on here have questioned the quality of Tyson for a few years so you need to also expect that these decisions will occur as we get better. He is also one of our only mid options that really has no flexibility of role.

Wagner is clearly the new whipping boy with Frost the player seen as what we want him to be not the player he performs as.  Wagner provides a lot more flexibility, allows us to free up Hibberd and Hunt to attack as well as the ability for Vince or Lewis through the middle and is much better in execution than given credit. He may not be the best player but his role in the team gives us a more flexible 22. For where Frost is at go back and watch how our backline functioned when OMac went off and Frost came on in the JLT.

Expect to see strong debate like this every week as people adjust hopefully to the decisions a quality team with quality depth need to make at match committee and the increased expectations to stay in the team.

Final note. Great to see finally no one querying Melksham's inclusion and growing importance to the team. For those that question if the selectors know what they are doing go and visit some early threads from last year.

Agree 100% Redleg.

Frosty's big,  fast and mature body in defence to play on a big mature forward seemed to be a no brainer.

I wouldn’t rule out Brayshaw’s teeth being an issue, but it is interesting that there was talk on here after AFLX about him not really having a position.

Also interesting that Goodwin pumped up Brayshaws tyres by saying (paraphrasing) it was going to be good to have a ‘fit’ Gus back and contributing to the team. By memory around aflx time...

I just think Goodwin wants Maynard to severely maim a few Geelong players this weekend.

Has Maynard ever actually done anything resembling that, either at Casey, or any of his other games?

Just a note on Maynard, Goodwin stated it is everything, training included, that is taken into consideration

Thursday, last training before 1st gane, let's ease thru it and not get hurt

Not Maynard, he attacked the whole session, including one contested possession followed by a flat out 70 metre sprint into the 50 to be on the end of the chain he started

Not sure why you would compare the stats of a lock down defender against an attacking one. Different roles. I like Wagner but it really highlights how far he needs to improve.

This is the fear with wagner. 3 turnovers a game. Poor dispoal efficiency.

THE ACCIDENTAL DEMONS by The Oracle

In the space of eight days, the Melbourne Football Club’s plans for the coming year were turned upside down by two season-ending injuries to players who were contending strongly for places in its opening round match against the GWS Giants. Shane McAdam was first player to go down with injury when he ruptured an Achilles tendon at Friday afternoon training, a week before the cut-off date for the AFL’s pre-season supplemental selection period (“SSP”). McAdam was beginning to get some real mom

RETURN TO NORMAL by Whispering Jack

One of my prized possessions is a framed, autographed guernsey bearing the number 31 worn by my childhood hero, Melbourne’s champion six time premiership player Ronald Dale Barassi who passed away on 16 September 2023, aged 87. The former captain who went on to a successful coaching career, mainly with other clubs, came back to the fold in his later years as a staunch Demon supporter who often sat across the way from me in the Northern Stand of the MCG cheering on the team.
