Since we’re not really going to gain anything from a win, I’d definently say no to Viney and just let him concentrate on round 1. Why risk any player? It’s not like premiership oints are on the line or anything.

i seem to recall someone saying that jennings said post-aflx premiership glory that we'd be aiming to play close to our best 22 by the second jlt match against the saints at docklands, and a slightly lesser squad against north, so i ill go with this for the bigger tassie ground, which actually seems to suit playing a taller line-up due to the blustery conditions:

Given both Jetta and Hibberd’s ability to compete in the air as a third-man up, I’d love an explanation from those who have selected all of Frost, O-Mac and Lever in the same backline?

To me it makes little sense. Especially when one considers the way we play as a defensive zone. Rarely do we see any of our backmen have one-on-one lock-down roles for the entirety of a game. They’re often caught out in between opponents. 

One of the benefits of having defenders who possess elite intercept skills in a setup like ours is that we don’t need to  rely on an overly tall backline. We have one of the most aggresive backline setups in the AFL. 

Jetta, Hibberd and Lever are elite intercept players. Oscar and Frost are not. I believe that Oscar and Frost should and will be competing for the same position. 

Thanks to the acquisition of Lever, I hope that it allows Oscar/Frost to play a more simplified role due to their inconsistencies as players. I feel comfortable if Frost or Oscar are playing on a key opposition forward knowing that we have one of Jetta, Hibberd or Lever to nearly always impact that contest as a third man. And by impact I mean kill the ball or win the contest. Frost and Oscar are not that player.

Here’s hoping the coaches feel the same way come Round 1.

my justification for all of frost, o mac and lever will play at least to start with in the jlt for the following reason:

• lever is arguably the best 'third up' player in the competition
• his recruitment allows hibberd to play further up the ground
• i'm not expecting hibberd to play in the jlt, necessarily
• tasmanian ground is a bigger ground with blustery conditions and suits playing three tall defenders
• if you can't experiment with this in the jlt, when can you?

We are gonna kick some big scores this season.  So many options up forward....  Melk and Harmes to have huge seasons, bookmark it!

1. I've barely ever seen Lever win a one on one against a quality tall forward in his career. Whilst playing as the third tall lets him lead the league in intercept possessions. Put your best players in their best positions and find role players for the rest is usually a wise philosophy, every other point I make pales in comparison to that one.

2. I like the risk reward of leaving Jetta and Hibberd in occasional mismatches but signing them up to start on talls is asking for trouble. Eventually they'll get beat by a tall if given enough chances.
3. Even if you were to play only one of Frost and Oscar you'd have to play both in this practice match given you've got 25 spots in the team and have them compete for the spot surely?
4. Geelong - until proven otherwise - probably go in with Hawkins, 2nd ruck (Blicavs/Smith), Menzel with Dangerfield (or Ablett) playing a fair bit inside 50. That combination means there's enough height to have 2 talls and Lever. 
5. After 1 key defender, Lever, Jetta, Hunt, Hibberd and probably Lewis you've got 6 defenders. Your next best options are either Vince or Wagner. It's ambitious to expect much of Bernie and whilst I like Wagner I think he's best as a rebounding and intercepting player. Playing a second tall makes us stronger defensively and putting Hibberd and Lever in more attacking roles counters the loss of attack. If we had Joel Smith as a 2nd tall option I'd consider him, same if we could play Salem at half back and be significantly more attacking with 1 less tall but that doesn't seem to be the plan.

I.m a bit agin the recruits getting a go too early. One reason being that the extra pace could catch these boys in the wrong place at the wrong time, or sort of in between, and i know they have got to be there sooner or later, but are there any stats on new players getting injured earlier than the rest at the start of seasons games?

Huh? You'd go into round 1 against Geelong with barely any of the senior team having ANY meaningful match practice? They'd be unbelievably rusty then in round 1 and would completely blow up about halfway through the third quarter.

I'd like to see games put into the new kids and those fighting for spots (I don't think they should be named as emergencies). These include the likes of Spargo, Baker, Fritsch, Balic, Maynard, JKH, Wagner (off the top of my head).

We've also heard that some will be getting more midfield and on-ball time this year. So I'd like to see the likes of Petracca, Brayshaw, ANB, and Salem spend next to all their time there. Likewise, let's see some veterans, such as Lewis and Vince etc. (if named), spend all their time down back or forward.

Of course we want to see our club go out and win every game possible, but the JLT offers players an opportunity to shake off nerves (new players) and show what they are capable off.

No doubt that we go in with the strongest possible 25 we can field.

With only two practice games we need to get the run into the legs of those who will be lining up for us in Round 1.  The years of blooding youngsters in the JLT is behind us - with only two games to play we can't risk giving the kids a run for the sake of it.

I think Fritsch will get a look in, but others like Baker and Spargo will probably miss out, which I'm fine with.  I want us ready and raring to go in Round 1 so we can smash the handbaggers and get out finals tilt underway in style!

Fritsch showed me enough in the AFLX to think he's very much in contention for round 1, but I think back to Hannan last year and Brayshaw a couple of years before that debuting after only playing VFL practice games. I think there's a small chance we hide Fritsch in VFL games until round 1 and there's also a chance that someone from Baker, Spargo and maybe a handful of other players sneak in to the side on VFL form as well.

We have 12 days between practice matches, so there is no reason not too play our best team in both. I certainly wouldn't be playing anybody who is not a chance to play round 1.
