Who plays in JLT v North Melbourne 24/2?

Concur Poita. Only 2 main practice games and we must play best available. No doubt some niggling injuries around and we do not play those so some of the newbies will get a game but best available is way to go.

I'm not a fan of giving the new kids a run in the JLT (aside from Lever), we should play our top 24-26 fit players (what ever the extended bench allows) with the intention to nail downs structures and roles, and to build momentum to hit Round 1 fully primed. 

So would prefer to see Lewis and Vince playing both games over Spargo, Baker, etc...

While many focus on our Round 23 performance as to why we missed finals, early season losses were, obviously, equally damaging to our cause.

Given the way we hit the proverbial wall again last season I am interested to see if we adopt another strategy for the practice games this year.

For the last few years we have done well in the practice games which shows they are irrelevant to the season proper.

Pity we cannot have 10-15 on the bench.

Not thrilled by the "non availability list" posted early in this thread given the time of year.

2018 is such an important year for this club !

Saturday's forecast is 23 degrees with 90% chance of rain...gotta love Hobart. And the game is even farther south towards Huon Valley. 

At least it's a taste of the place for the real season - since we're always sent down there.

Really.....Has had a great pre season according to the club and just a minor set back with a calf

Some of these guys seem to be as fragile as china dolls. Too many injuries are creeping back or staying around (yet again). Van den Berg looks like he’s finished. Viney’s foot could easily be more of a worry than they're letting on. Jones is getting old. Tyson is injury prone. Weidemann is fragile.

Although it's only a practice game, my desire to beat North is as strong as ever.

It might not mean much, but psychologically getting a win over them will be really important ahead of our round 3 clash.

As such I hope we play as strong a team as possible, obviously leaving aside anyone who isn't 110% ready to go physically.

They’re experienced players. They don’t need a run in game that risks them getting a major season-ending injury when they’re half trying. They’ll be in peak form if they’ve trained hard in the pre- season.

Gawn just said that as there is only 2 JLT matches, that they would be playing their strongest sides. 

Players themselves would want at least 2 games to help with match fitnesses.

Training hard over pre-season is one thing, but having match fitness and shaking off the 'rust' is another.  Players still need a few games of footy to get themselves going, and these two JLT games will do just that.  It's why we are aiming to play our strongest sides over the next fortnight in readiness for the Cats in Round 1.

The first round of VFL stretches over almost two week between April 8 and April 17.

Casey's match is scheduled last on April 17. The same day as the seniors play round 3.

IIRC much the same happened last year re the fringe players missing several weeks because of the comparatively short VFL season. Combine this with the byes that do not seem to be co-ordinated and the VFL has a few shortcomings.

Makes the JLT important for those pressing for round 1 as "Casey form" will not be  a factor for several weeks.
