He has been the invited to tour the facilities at Port Adelaide, Sydney and Geelong. How do you know that there has only been one offer? Just because Port Adelaide is front running, things can change quickly as draft picks become available.

How do you know they all made an offer?  How do you know it was the clubs chasing him, and not his manager organising meetings?  Did he tour Sydney?  How do we know if Watts actually "chose" Power, and that it wasn't a case of them being the only ones that showed true interest?

So many questions with this one, CBD, but like me, you know SFA.  I will say though, if three clubs were chasing him, then we'd be getting more than pick 30-something.  And I don't want to hear about the Ablett clause being the reason Geelong pulled out, if they wanted him, they'd make it work.

It's exactly like Menzel at Geelong.  Quite simply, no team wants him, or is willing to pay what Geelong would want in return.

P-man, ..... mate........... Seriously?

That comment could be countered with one equally as far-fetched the other way.  Lemme try.

What this thread has re-enforced to me is that some will back Watts on literally anything. The club could release a video of him smoking ice and then assaulting a 80 year old to steal her pension, and there would be posters on here saying "Well, hes a lovely kick".

Do you see how dumb those sorts of comments are, regardless of who you support?

Keep it real.

If you don't think some posters blindly support anything the club does, you don't spend enough time on Demonland.

How "dumb" you think that observation is means very little.

[censored] me. How could anyone possibly be happy for this we get absolute peanuts for a player that would have much more value to us staying

I see your point of view... which is echoed by he footy club. Isn’t right nor wrong i absolutely believe we should back the club in whatever decisions they make...

But... Do you believe that trading him out in a so called weak draft year is going to have a negative or positive impact? Having spoken at length to two player sponsors I get the distinct impression that the handling of watts has the potential to have a huge negative impact on the on the team or at very least two players. We can all see he hasn’t lived up to the unrealistic expectations of demon supporters the FD and the general football world. He was never going to be our saviour. He really has been unfairly treated since day dot. Equal to that he has also not put in the effort in from all accounts. So they probably balance each other out.  The point is.. if we got watts at pick 31-39 we would never be having these conversations. Sure he’s gone which is fine Melbourne and any afl team is far bigger than an individual. Lever will be great no doubt and we have players developing. I just personally can’t see the value in getting rid of watts. I’m not inside the 4 walls of the footy club or privy to the conversations they have had with him. The perception they have of him is different to some supporters which is fine. End of the day they are the experts trying to make the club better not f- it up.

If emotion is taken out of the equation...

watts vs the pick we will receive will be judged and compared for the rest of his career. Don’t think the loss of him will make us a worse team but having him is a benefit to the forwards we have.

Personally I have never expected him to be our 'saviour'. He doesn't fit the profile.

What I do expect, however, is his behaviour's and standards be that of a senior 9 year player. Someone for our kids to look up to. The leadership group and coaching group have condemned him in this area on multiple occasions and that really should say it all. It's not like they are making this stuff up (and suggesting its a personal vendetta his nothing short of ridiculous).

Finishing 21st in the B&F in a year which saw us almost taste some real success also speaks volumes.

His training and preparation habits are poor enough to have us arrive at this point. It's obvious he has to go, so the job of the FD is to get the best deal now. The fact only 1 club made a legitimate offer for his services is another damning example of his actual value.

Granted, I accept the fact we did just trade out a commodity we are desperately short on in kicking ability and decision making. But again, his personal attributes have obviously left the club with no choice. Jack made the decision to get traded this year.

I have faith in the FD that they will get the best possible outcome here. 31 seems unders, so I trust we will get something else in an upgrade somewhere. And hopefully we can package all these picks into something decent.

What we get back may not immediately benefit us, given the lack of what we need being available and the time left to craft something, but the club seems fairly adamant that having him on the list would have us worse off than getting unders for him in a trade. And I agree with that.

Chazz you are asking me the same questions I asked in my post. Read it before posting. I never said that they made an offer. I am just said that nobody knows what  discussions occurred and queried whether they had taken place with only one club!

Perhaps only 3 suitors when MFC says Watts is to be traded due to non adhering to team standards and character requirements. Not a great sales campaign

Agree that missing finals hurt.  It was a kick in the guts.

But remove missing finals as due to Watts!!

that was due to inconsistency by the WHOLE team (excl Oliver) and poor Jesse Hogans many issues.

Didnt see Watts in the last quarter v Lions when they kicked 5 goals in 7 minutes.  22 others that day turned a percentage boost into a heart stopper. That and the Magpie loss effectively killed our season.

It's not just about Watts. He's the lightning rod. But there's more at play.

Goodwin is making a statement. And it is not "if we can only get rid of Watts, we'll be a finals winning side".

You can bet your behind that this is not the only aspect of his stand.

This is only part of it. He will having quiet words to Gawn, Bugg, Kent, probably Jesse in the pre season when 2017 is behind him, and others. Assuming they don't get the message anyway.

It's about setting standards that cannot be dodged or done in a half @rsed fashion.

If he got rid of Kent, would everyone get the message? Maybe, maybe not.

But he's gotten rid of Watts. Is anyone in any doubt at all of his determination to succeed?

Go Goody.

Go Demons.

Thank god thats all over.

Imagine using the prized pick 1 in the draft to select an uncompetitive player.  Diabolical.

Now lets package up picks 29, 31 and 35 and get something really nice.  Go Dees.

Quality post.  It's so good that it is competing with some of my work for being the best in this thread.

Thank Christ it's over.

Time to move on.  You can be angry about the pick but it will change nothing.  Club wanted to move on, so should we.

Thanks for everything, Jack.

Agree. I think many others will be having a hard conversation.

But confused by setting standards and then allowing others to stay on

I can’t see how Kent stays given 5 years of nothing and was disciplined this year. Not even within Watts sphere for talent.

I can’t see how Bugg stays. JJ social media. Unbelievable behind the play incident !!!

Pathetic outcome for Melbourne. This trading period could have been negotiated so much better.

Based on what??? We got rid of an under performing player for a 2nd rd pick and brought in the most exciting key defender in the game.

Great trade period if you ask me.

And he is out! After a sometimes shaky knock, he managed to make a career best 232 before being comprehensibly bowled by an inswinging yorker.

The new man to the crease is Oscar McDonald, who will join Leaver who is unbeaten on 170.

It will be weird not seeing watts in the red or blue. It will now be interesting to observe him as another footballer in another team.

Hey at least he will probably get to play in China.

Best of luck jack.  I hope you do well and its a shame u didn't get to play finals with us.

I think the rest of the team has been put on notice. U would be stupid to rock up to day 1 of pre season overweight or unfit.

THE ACCIDENTAL DEMONS by The Oracle

In the space of eight days, the Melbourne Football Club’s plans for the coming year were turned upside down by two season-ending injuries to players who were contending strongly for places in its opening round match against the GWS Giants. Shane McAdam was first player to go down with injury when he ruptured an Achilles tendon at Friday afternoon training, a week before the cut-off date for the AFL’s pre-season supplemental selection period (“SSP”). McAdam was beginning to get some real mom

RETURN TO NORMAL by Whispering Jack

One of my prized possessions is a framed, autographed guernsey bearing the number 31 worn by my childhood hero, Melbourne’s champion six time premiership player Ronald Dale Barassi who passed away on 16 September 2023, aged 87. The former captain who went on to a successful coaching career, mainly with other clubs, came back to the fold in his later years as a staunch Demon supporter who often sat across the way from me in the Northern Stand of the MCG cheering on the team.
