If you accept pick 31 for Jack you are as crazy as the MFC and Goodwin. Gee, this club lacks nouse. Pick 31, unknown and a lowly draft pick. Complete pig in a poke situation. Have the premiership Port. We are glad to help your cause at our expense! How do they do it? Three class players and we can only land one. They must have something enticing. Probably the location.

Agree . Pick 31 not enough

Disagree   MFC and Goodwin not crazy.

What about Goodwin, No premiership.

Not bad.

No real issues if they wanted to trade out watts but I don’t think the public criticism of him is what strong clubs do. Wouldn’t have happened under Roos. I think some players would be a little bit put off by that sort of singular commentary. Could have very easily been played out behind closed doors.

I’m unhappy with he way the club has handled this. Watts loved the club and has been burnt. Some posting here say there is more to the story but clearly have nothing to back it up.

I doubt whoever we draft at pick 31 will be as good. I understand we have to continuously improve our list but this was a crap way to do it. Goodwin has a lot to prove now.

(end rant)

Some things can't be said in public.

Nonetheless, it has been handled poorly by club, especially in terms of leveraging any value from a potential trade.

People in here already saying the deal is bad before we even know what the deal is haha

Partly because he’s elite by foot/decision making.. his forward pressure actually doesn’t rate that bad. It’s just a lot of people have these unrealistic expectations of him. They’ll probably get a second rounder for him. Won’t be able to judge if it was a good or bad deal until we see what sort of player comes at that pick. Not really worth the risk as we know what we have in watts - elite kick, elite decision maker average contest player.... as Roos has said why not focus on what he’s good at rather than what he does poorly.

At the end of day I put blind faith in the club to make the right decisions with regards to improving our list and getting into the premiership race... I will have a disappointed 8 year old son who adored Watts but them's the breaks...

I can at least go and see Watts run around with Toumpas when Norwood play Port Adelaide next season...

Take the emotion out of it and see it for what it is... The club made a tough decision... If it's right or wrong will only be known down the track...

I sleep easy

Fair enough Clint l guess there would be some ramifications but l am disappointed with the club. Makes us look bad, if we want to attract young supporters we have to do better.

Very simplistic way of looking at it.

Just as a reminder.

We lost to North twice, Freo once, had Brisbane on toast and nearly collapsed, and flubbed it against C'wood in rd 23.

After another season of tripping at important hurdles, and with our stumbing, bumbling end to the season, Goodwin, the guy with his nads on the line, made the call that something has to change.

Otherwise we'll forever be flubbing it when it counts.

If this doesn't send a message to the players, then it's time to step down and join the VAFA.

Again, lets wait and see what we actually get huh?

My guess is 31 + an upgrade somewhere else, which we can hopefully package to get back in the 1st round.

If you read what I said we have to wait and see what player we get at the pick we receive before we judge on failure or success. We could get a mythical pick 12 for him and pick another L. Cook. My point being is the player we know is sometimes better then the player we don’t know. Watts is a known quantity.

Why not demand he try harder to improves the things he does poorly.

This seems to be what the coaches have done, and Watts either couldnt or wouldnt bust a gut to improve. They obviously got sick to death of waiting for Watts to develop some urgency.

Good kicking should never be enough to save a player from being traded if thats essentially all they offer the team on game day.

I personally wont be tearing up when the trade is completed.

Absolutely he's known quantity

That is - known for laziness, unwillingness to take his game to the next level, a poor influence on younger players and an all round disappointment over 9 years

I'm thrilled that our FD had the guts to make this call, and in turn sending a very strong message to the rest of our list.

    BLOW THE SIREN by Meggs

Fremantle hosted the Demons on a sunny 20-degree Saturdayafternoon winning the toss and electing to defend in the first quarter against the 3-goal breeze favouring the Parry Street end. There was method here, as this would give the comeback queens, the Dockers, last use of the breeze. The Melbourne Coach had promised an improved performance, and we did start better than previous weeks, winning the ball out of the middle, using the breeze advantage and connecting to the forwards.

    GETAWAY by Meggs

Calling all fit players. Expect every available Melbourne player to board the Virgin cross-continent flight to Perth for this Round 4 clash on Saturday afternoon at Fremantle Oval. It promises to be keenly contested, though Fremantle is the bookies clear favourite.  If we lose, finals could be remoter than Rottnest Island especially following on from the Dees 50-point dismantlement by North Melbourne last Sunday.  There are 8 remaining matches, over the next 7 weeks.  To Meggs’

    DRUBBING by Meggs

With Casey Fields basking in sunshine, an enthusiastic throng of young Demons fans formed a guard of honour for the evergreen and much admired 75-gamer Paxy Paxman. As the home team ran out to play, Paxy’s banner promised that the Demons would bounce back from last week’s loss to Brisbane and reign supreme.   Disappointingly, the Kangaroos dominated the match to win by 50 points, but our Paxy certainly did her bit.  She was clearly our best player, sweeping well in defence.

    GARNER STRENGTH by Meggs

In keeping with our tough draw theme, Week 3 sees Melbourne take on flag favourites, North Melbourne, at Casey Fields this Sunday at 1:05pm.  The weather forecast looks dry, a coolish 14 degrees and will be characteristically gusty.  Remember when Casey Fields was considered our fortress?  The Demons have lost two of their past three matches at the Field of Dreams, so opposition teams commute down the Princes Highway with more optimism these days.  The Dees held the highe

    ALLY’S FIELDS by Meggs

It was a sunny morning at Casey Fields, as Demon supporters young and old formed a guard of honour for fan favourite and 50-gamer Alyssa Bannan.  Banno’s banner stated the speedster was the ‘fastest 50 games’ by an AFLW player ever.   For Dees supporters, today was not our day and unfortunately not for Banno either. A couple of opportunities emerged for our number 6 but alas there was no sizzle.   Brisbane atoned for last week’s record loss to North Melbourne, comprehensively out

    GOOD MORNING by Meggs

If you are driving or training it to Cranbourne on Saturday, don’t forget to set your alarm clock. The Melbourne Demons play the reigning premiers Brisbane Lions at Casey Fields this Saturday, with the bounce of the ball at 11:05am.  Yes, that’s AM.   The AFLW fixture shows deference to the AFL men’s finals games.  So, for the men it’s good afternoon and good evening and for the women it’s good morning.     The Lions were wounded last week by 44 points, their highest ever los

    HORE ON FIRE by Meggs

The 40,000 seat $319 million redeveloped Kardinia Park Stadium was nowhere near capacity last night but the strong, noisy contingent of Melbourne supporters led by the DeeArmy journeyed to Geelong to witness a high-quality battle between two of the best teams in AFLW.   The Cats entered the arena to the blasting sounds of Zombie Nation and made a hot start kicking the first 2 goals. They brought tremendous forward half pressure, and our newly renovated defensive unit looked shaky.

    REMATCH by Meggs

The Mighty Demons take on the confident Cats this Saturday night at the recently completed $319 million redeveloped GMHBA Stadium, with the bounce of the ball at 7:15pm. Our last game of 2023 was an agonisingly close 5-point semi-final loss to Geelong, and we look forward to Melbourne turning the tables this week. Practice match form was scratchy for both teams with the Demons losing practice matches to Carlton and Port Adelaide, while the Cats beat Collingwood but then lost to Essendo

    WELCOME 2024 by Meggs

It’s been hard to miss the seismic global momentum happening in Women’s sport of late. The Matildas have been playing to record sell-out crowds across Australia and ‘Mary Fowler is God’ is chalked onto footpaths everywhere. WNBA basketball rookie sensation Caitlin Clark has almost single-handedly elevated her Indiana Fever team to unprecedented viewership, attendances and playoffs in the USA.   Our female Aussie Paris 2024 Olympians won 13 out of Australia’s all-time record 18 gol
