I agree with you about Watts. However, listening to the odd response by the coach in the post-match media conference to a question about how Watts went at Casey makes me think he was none too pleased.

Goody is just annoyed about the constant questions regarding Watts as they always ask about him an no one else. That's why he keeps on reeling out the "He'll be treated like everyone else, it wasn't just him dropped etc etc". The club has always stated he should be treated like every other player on the list.

I'd rather we focused on the possibility that it may be our Elimination Final.

Its the same thing really.  My point if only semi whimsical is that i fully expect the Wobblies to as intent on hurting us as much physically as much as ladder input.  They'll want to go out on a high. They have nothing to look to after Saturday ;)

I expect a VERY hard fought game. We have it over them for talent. We might need a few to be sort of designated 'proctectors' for the afternoon.

Anyone who thinks this will be a gentleman's encounter is fooling themselves.

Ought to be fun. Im informed I'll be accompanying sone of the filthy inlaws and seated among ex Pie Players. Ought to make for an entertaining afternoon ??

Joffa is known for his "Game Over" antics (be it through the gold jacket, or a sign he holds up).

A couple of years ago, we beat them which put them out of finals contention.  A few Dees supporters held up a "Season Over" banner.

Would love to see someone hold up a "Career Over" sign at some stage early in the 4th on Saturday...

In: Salem, Watts, Viney/Bugg.

Out: Wagner, Stretch, Vince - either reported or form.

A couple of things for me. Watts, Hogan, Pedo can play in the same side, Watts has to play link man role like Tom Lynch though and deliver into 50, which is what we've been poor at. And Time to move Hunt out of the back-line and up to the wing. I think sides are working him out a bit. Emergence of Brayshaw back there has been a revelation. So back-line for me would be:

B: Hibberd, T McDonald, Jetta

HB: Salem, O McDonald, Brayshaw

C: Hunt, -------, Lewis

Vince is an absolute liability back there and has been all year.

Also, yesterday, was it only me who noticed, but Brayshaw seemed to spend a hell of a lot of time off the ground. Not sure of his TOG totals but I'd prefer him to spend more TOG.

Tom had a stinker yesterday but he was due for one and Garlett stays in, we cant just boot out our leading goalkicker for the year, he's had a tough run personally and he did his job yesterday anyway with 2 goals. He was threatening v North and Port and if it werent for some missed easy shots he wouldn't even come into discussion. Yes his defensive pressure isn't 100% but he hasn't looked right since WCE game where he got injured.

Out: Stretch. A decent footballer but can’t currently keep up with the speed of our game (see also JKH). And it’s not really something you can pick up in the 2’s. Crows and others would be watching closely.

Next cabs off the rank: Viney, Maynard, Bugg, Watts (the latter around the middle and wings).

Out: Wagner. Took a while to build form and clean up his disposal earlier in the year but has gone back to square one after a return to the VFL. We don’t have the time to persist and be patient right now.

Next off:  Frost/Salem

Slated Out: Hannan. Can’t see him being dropped as he’s getting back up to speed and provides a heap of forward pressure. It would be foolhardy to replace this with Watts.

Next off: Bugg

Potential Out: Bernie.

Potential replacements: - Viney, Maynard, Bugg, Salem.

Others called for: Tyson, ANB & Garlett. Tyson isn't getting dropped. Garlett and ANB are down on touch atm (as was Frost and I also think Hunt and Hibberd currently to a degree) but it's not a matter of effort. Petracca found some extra mojo today without a rest. These other players still look close to being damaging.

Gut feel: Viney will be given another week and Maynard will come in for Stretch for added grunt. Frost or Salem for Wagner depending on our preferred tall/medium defensive dynamic, but I don't see what Wagner offers that Frost doesn't. Yet, I also don't see Goodwin desiring three KPDs or for Tomald to push back into and mess with our forward-line structure. Bernie will survive the MRP, and Watts hasn't done enough to resume a role as a forward target. Hannan will stay and Melksham and Harmes will keep Bugg out.

Conclusion: Stretch for Maynard (and maybe Frost for Wagner) with some Demonland underwhelment and serious MFC selection headaches for an elimination final should we make it.

KENNEDY?

Kennedy to replace Stretch

Watts to replace Wagner

I could see:

Out.. Wagner, Stretch

In .. Salem , Bugg

Did Vince not tag Rockliff, keeping him to 16 possessions?

I think you'll find that was Hunt. Except I think Rockliff tagged Hunt, not the other way around. Essentially a nil-all draw. (I know Rockliff kicked a goal, but he was not nearly as damaging as usual.)

Anyone else see watts not making the distance from 45 out at Casey? Used to slot those in. Maybe still not confident with his hamstring

It was into the wind but i agree that hw has struggled getting distance since his hamstring.

His struggles since that hammy and goodies srong praise of hogan's effort to rehab his shoulder makes me think watts perhaps did not apply himself in the way goody expects

Can we bring in Lumumba for a farewell game?

Perfect setting for  a Lumumba farewell. Give the prince a right Royal send off. We can all enjoy the 'Last Laugh " Collingwood and Melbourne fans united for the first time. An historic ground breaking event. Maybe we can build bridges with the Collingwood people. Could be a catalyst for a  bigger and better world. Reconcile the Israelis and the Palestinians, the Shias and the Sunnis, the catholics and the protestants, Essendon FC and everybody else. All on the back of giving Heretier one more crack at it. Small cost, huge potential upside. I've even convinced myself now.

I would expect Vince to be suspended, So...

OUT Vince, Wagner, Stretch

IN Salem, Watts, Viney

Move Angus back to HB if needed for balance

We look a lot stronger with that team! and the fwd line very potent

Brayshaw played 76 minutes of a total of 121. Most players played 100+ minutes.

How nice that we are now so close to finals that we are picking our best possible side - developing young players such as Weids and Maynard almost goes out the door in the quest for victory.

I was really pleased we gave Billy a go this week, but unfortunately he didn't perform as well as he can and at this time of year that means VFL finals is the go for him. The same applies to Wags, who tackled well, but disposed of it like a VFL player.

Assuming Viney is again rested and that is impossible to know unless you are the club doctor as the club is not revealing the issue, then the two obvious ins are Watts (best in VFL last week and loves the Pies now) and Salem (best the previous week and clearly not a VFL level player).

The only question I have is that which many have said and relates to Jeffy. Unlike Wattsy, he hasn't yet been punished for his poor attack on the footy (3 weeks in a row now) and it's tricky dropping him now because we are so close to finals and he's our FF (yes that's his role) and when we break we want him involved. With his leg-speed you want him featuring in September, so dropping him for Kennedy is a big call, but it could happen. Certainly if Viney is fit and Vince isn't suspended, then I reckon it may have to happen because no-one else deserves to go on form.

According to the AFL website, time on ground for Brayshaw was 63%, which compares with Wagner (62%), Stretch (66%) and Tyson (68%) as the others in the 60s. Other nominal onballers were Melksham (85), Jones (85), Lewis (85), Oliver (75), Petracca (78) and Neal-Bullen (84).

I can appreciate that Wagner and Stretch might have had their time shortened due to their performance, but I can't understand why Brayshaw and Tyson played unders. (Cue Tyson critics...)

Perhaps he could play the first 3 quarters for Collingwood and the last quarter for us?

Demonland Trackwatchers braved the sweltering heat to bring you their Preseason Training observations from Gosch's Paddock on Monday morning. SCOOP JUNIOR'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS I went down today in what were pretty ordinary conditions - hot and windy. When I got there, they were doing repeat simulations of a stoppage on the wing and then moving the ball inside 50. There seemed to be an emphasis on handballing out of the stoppage, usually there were 3 or 4 handballs to

BEST OF THE REST by Meggs

Meggs' Review of Melbourne's AFLW Season 9 ... Congratulations first off to the North Melbourne Kangaroos on winning the 2024 AFLW Premiership. Roos Coach Darren Crocker has assembled a team chock-full of competitive and highly skilful players who outclassed the Brisbane Lions in the Grand Final to remain undefeated throughout Season 9. A huge achievement in what was a dominant season by North. For Melbourne fans, the season was unfortunately one of frustration and disappointment
