POST MATCH DISCUSSION - Round 22

Demonland

Brisbane certainly aren't the worst side in the comp and don't forget what we saw today was exactly how they beat Essendon weeks ago. Remember the Dons got 25 points up and Brisbane came back and pipped them at the post. Possibly the match that could cost Essendon a finals spot.

They will not go away and structured up very well against our zone defence. Fagan is a very good coach. I thought in the second quarter we were going to move away but lost momentum with all the 50 meter penalties paid and the goals that resulted. The umpires must have been spoken too as none after half time.

I missed the game and Collingwoods first half v Geelong, and only read post-match. The finals talk is a bit concerning as WCE v Adel may be a dead rubber still for the Crows. Are the Pies actually in better form if they play the way they did against Geelong? Or was it a Geelong issue? Should we be concerned here? Is it the elephant in the room atm?

I know some responses will be: If we cant beat pies then we don't deserve to be in the finals, but i disagree. Coll can beat anyone on any day if they play at their peak (As can we) - And a team that lost to them, could bounce back and win a premiership.

Geelong aren't that good for a start, they play the MCG badly (wide ground). Collingwood played pretty well but at the end instead of pushing forward went back to their crab ways and had a lot of sideways movement. Watching our game today if we stay switched on, we will win comfortably

I rate that win.   I don't care about where they are on the ladder.   Brisbane are a dangerous team with some form players.

We have an inability to play against the clarkson style game plan. Fagen has replicated hawthorn just with different jumpers.

Pedersen is actually quite a smart footballer. I think it was Healy who said during the game that it's probably been the right coaching staff (as opposed to previous) who are behind his form.

Now for them to get the Weed up and about for next year because Pedo definitely ain't no spring chicken.

Pedo doesn't have many miles on the clock though. Only 65ish games played...

IMO crows have plenty to play for. They just lost to Sydney and will want to head into finals with some winning form.

Pies should have a few out injured. Dees with everything to play for.

Hopefully the Hawks beat the dogs too

I see what you're getting at and that ultimately is the most frustrating thing about the fact we took our foot off in the last quarter and jammed on the breaks. We had a really good opportunity to kick on and get some breathing room percentage wise but we didn't and now because of that the door is still ajar.

We should be the Pies though, we do have a better team than them and we have everything to play for. If the players can't get up and be manic with pressure for that then they shouldn't be playing AFL footy. Players like Jones, Gawn, TMac and others who have been around should be firing the boys up through the week.

I was happy to hear Jones say they haven't counted their chickens yet.

For the love of all that is red and blue, thank every God in existence that we were able to win that.  Brisbane are no pushovers but we made it very, very difficult for ourselves.  We put the cue in the rack when we got 5 goals up and learned a very valuable lesson today.

So we didn't learn anything being up 40 pts against St Kilda only to watch them come back to 4pts but we did learn something today?

I don't think we learned anything against the Saints and I'd be surprised if the players learned anything from today.

Dal Santo on the radio said the AFL have changed the rule where you kick it to someone in the fwd 50m and get another 30 secs to shoot for goal. Like Lewis to ANB against Carlton and again in hte last minute today.

I hadn't heard that. Does anyone know if this is correct? He was saying the umpires can call play on.

we had to fight it out.

We really missed Viney today. Our structure in stoppages seemed all out of whack. Even when we were getting first possession we weren't generally exiting the stoppage cleanly. I definitely think the Lions are pretty damn good for a bottom of the ladder team. Their ball use and ability to hit targets was way better than StKilda last week.

We were treated pretty poorly by the umpires again today. I don't think I have seen softer 50 meter penalties  paid than some of the ones today, and as for the high frees being constantly paid to that little weasel mathieson, I don't have words.

Jesse had a day out and Gussy just keeps building, Trac looks like he is starting to get his mojo back but there are a few passengers which needs dealing with. I really would like to see Wagner back in the 2s working on his kicking and Salem off the half back flank where he belongs. If we can get everyone firing at the same time i think we would really see something. Here's hoping it happens in the finals campaign.

Nope, Lions have vastly improved in the second half of the season.

Have you taken a look at North they are a disgrace play like busted a holes for the last 3 months and suddenly play like there lives depended on it against us, you can put house on it they will tank the house down next week against the Lions and gain the 1st draft pick.

Brisbane had nothing to play for today no expectation but they rise coz were a young talented team they rested players like Hipwood and 2-3 others primed for this game been a common theme this year.

We lied down to easily for me. We have them by the throat and decided to let go. Great teams don't do that. If we don't win next week that extra 2-3% could be the difference.

Whats happened to stretch? Looks like a lost child out there at the moment. I'd say he'll be the one in strife when Viney is back

I think it's since they tried to turn him in to an inside type player. He was far better running wings and of half back a season ago. Not sure we are getting the best out of him, seems bereft of confidence.

We failed to slow the game down at that point though SW and should have (about 15 or so to go).  We then tried to with about 5 minutes to go instead with only a slight lead and nearly lost the match as a result.

We still have a bit to learn i reckon re;   when it's time to play fast or slow.

Tyson - 27 possessions @ 59% efficiency. 19 of his disposals were handballs and half his possessions uncontested. 3 tackles, 0 score involvements and 0 assists.

Seriously.

There's nowhere to hide man.

He is a bit over rated by many IMO steve.

Viney for Tyson when fit.

Frost for Wags.

Watts for Stretch.

That will be our best line up for finals if we make it.

Wagner will be straight out. I totally agree we really could have used Frost's speed and his reach. Would have easily saved 3 or 4 inside 50 marks

You don't know that. He could just as easily have given away 3 or 4 goals through turnovers.

People have got to stop running this film of "what might have happened" in their heads as if it's reality - and then arguing from that as if it did.

LEADERS OF THE PACK by The Oracle

I was asked to write a preview of this week’s Round 8 match between Melbourne and Geelong. The two clubs have a history that goes right back to the time when the game was starting to become an organised sport but it’s the present that makes the task of previewing this contest so interesting. Both clubs recently reached the pinnacle of the competition winning premiership flags in 2021 and 2022 respectively, but before the start of this season, many good judges felt their time had passed - n

    TRAINING: Monday 29th April 2024

Demonland Trackwatcher Kev Martin was on hand at Gosch's Paddock for Monday's training session and made the following observations. About 38 to 40  players down at training.  BBB walking laps.  Charlie Spargo still in rehab, doing short run throughs.  Christian Salem has full kit on and doing individual work with a trainer. He is is starting to get into some sprints. I cannot see Andy Moniz-Wakefield out there. Jack Viney and Kade Chandler have broken away from the

    DISCO INFERNO by Whispering Jack

Two weeks ago, when the curtain came down on Melbourne’s game against the Brisbane Lions, the team trudged off the MCG looking tired and despondent at the end of a tough run of games played in quick succession. In the days that followed, the fans wanted answers about their team’s lamentable performance that night and foremost among their concerns was whether the loss was a one off result of fatigue or was it due to other factor(s) of far greater consequence.  As it turns out, the answer to

TIGERS PUNT CASEY by KC from Casey

The afternoon atmosphere at the Swinburne Centre was somewhat surreal as the game between Richmond VFL and the Casey Demons unfolded on what was really a normal work day for most Melburnians. The Yarra Park precinct marched to the rhythm of city life, the trains rolled by, pedestrians walked by with their dogs and the traffic on Punt Road and Brunton Avenue swirled past while inside the arena, a football battle ensued. And what a battle it was? The Tigers came in with a record of two wins f
