Not sure you would even contemplate resigning Vandenberg until after the trade period. Aside from being a permanent fixture in the medical rooms, he is hardly a core player. Fringe players should be offered contracts only when everyone else is taken care of.

PS Hopefully the time off his feet has given him a chance to learn to handball on the chest of a teammate.

Good to see more demonlanders still view AVB as best 22. I certainly do.

And that's saying something. It's going to be a tough 22 to get into. We know year to year because of form and injuries, as well as trades and list structure in off seasons, a best 22 never looks the same. I can see many of our mid-range players dropping off... and it only needs to be an ANB, Hannah type for AVB to find his place again. He brings a lot to the table.

has speed, loves a tackle, tough in the clinches...can't kick

if he can sort out the latter he'll be best 22, otherwise he's at best fringe

and i hope 100% that he can because his other attributes are great

And just how important is it to have competent tough competitive combative fringe or depth players?

Make THE difference.

Is he the new JT ?

or is he the new Jayden Hunt who couldn't get on the ground for two seasons ? (so many calling for his delisting)

The problem is none of us know....

( the difference is that I think we can imagine VDB's best where none of us really had an inkling that JH would be quite as good as he is. I laugh now when I think back to some posters who questioned JH's speed when he had his first few games at Casey)

That's a good point... haven't had great luck at our club

Here's hoping that can turn around

Wants out. Won't be surprised if a deal is struck during trade week and he's sent to a side that'll let him cement a spot in their midfield

Can't imagine it being so after we were the ones who gave him his chance when no one else wanted to.

Also, every time he's been fit he's really played.

Surely you can't be for real??

Have connections to the club through my work and the mail we got is he's not too happy with his role and wants a chance to play full-time in the middle. Somewhere like Hawthorn or Carlton preferred destinations.

Why, he seems to have cemented his spot on the injured list?

Do they have spots available on their long term injury list?

Not happy with his role?  Bit hard to be given one when you are not even on the park.

This is a rubbish rumour of the highest order.

He sounded happy in the interview last week - he had just come back from a China holiday and doing promotional work there (I assumed that was for the club but not sure).

Maybe contract talks have started and he isn't happy with the offer.  Its tough for him, having spent 50% of his 3 years injured so hasn't been able to show what he can really do.  But also tough for the club to evaluate what he can offer.

But if Vand is doing a dummy spit because he isn't getting the role he wants it would be really disappointing given the support the club has provided.

He could ask for a one year deal, back himself in and earn a spot in the midfield and renegotiate for 2019 and beyond.  But if he wants it handed to him on a platter then fine he can go elsewhere.

Hope he stays!

Rubbish rumour, how can you be unhappy with the midfield time you are getting when you haven't even been fit to play all year ?

He would have been useful up forward playing a similar role to Trac. Some of our forward pressure could have been addressed had he been available this season. I still think he has a role to play.

And pray tell, what role does he seek?  Playing footy would be a good start.

He has seemed able to get a game almost every week when he isn't injured.

Not sure how to find the numbers but I can't remember his playing too many at Casey

RETURN TO NORMAL by Whispering Jack

One of my prized possessions is a framed, autographed guernsey bearing the number 31 worn by my childhood hero, Melbourne’s champion six time premiership player Ronald Dale Barassi who passed away on 16 September 2023, aged 87. The former captain who went on to a successful coaching career, mainly with other clubs, came back to the fold in his later years as a staunch Demon supporter who often sat across the way from me in the Northern Stand of the MCG cheering on the team.
