Big loss. Quite strange as his scans came back clear. Will need to work with physios then to get it right.

True both Watts and Jones are massive losses but I am more confident now than I have been in the last 10 years that we can  bring in new replacements who are ready to go and know there role in the team.

no need to drop a tall now.

Pedo and T Mac as our 2 tall forwards - good god!

we'll need luck on our side on Sat night

Just back from training.  Observations:

  • Watts was stretching and manipulating his tender hamstring throughout the portion of the session he completed prior to leaving early as per the previous posts / SEN.  It doesn't look like it will come up but I think he'd be right for next week.
  • Hogan doing left foot snap practice with Daniel Cross whilst the main group warmed up.  Left afterwards.  Looked to be in good spirit.
  • Wagner, Trengove and JKH in the middle at one point kicking in a triangle under the watchful eye of Goodwin
  • Hibberd trained fully with no sign of discomfort
  • Brayshaw and Smith joined in the training sessions and moved well
  • great camaraderie amongst the entire group

I suspect TMAC may play forward in Watts' absence but we'll see on Sat night.

JACK WATTS INJURY NEWS

MELBOURNE forward Jack Watts looks certain to miss Saturday's clash with West Coast in Perth after failing to complete training this morning.

Battling a hamstring complaint, Watts left the track early after completing only some light running.
He was seen hunched over speaking to staff before leaving the field.

Demons coach Simon Goodwin had told media this morning Watts had to complete full training today to be picked to take on the Eagles.

"We're in this period of six day breaks where if anyone's sore we won't take any risks on them," Goodwin said before training.

"So he'll have to train fully today but we do expect Jack to be able to do that and get on the flight later today."

Check out the article on the afl website: Watts up? Hamstring may sideline key demon.

Look at the picture and read below.

Nathan BROWN and Jack Watts were buyont.....

Who the hell is Nathan BROWN???????

Looks a lot like Nathan JONES but I could be mistaken.

Unbelievable.

Ah of course... copuchas has it.

Tmac will go forward. Wagner to defense.

Thanks for the report Cop.

I must admit that I'm a bit baffled by the number of posts I've read stating Maynard should be picked.

Looking at his numbers at VFL level it would appear that he's not yet ready for AFL. There are plenty who are ahead of him in the VFL (Wagner/Stretch/JKH/Kent/Trenners/etc), and yet plenty argue for some of these guys to stay at VFL until they have earned it, so how does Maynard even come into the equation at this early stage of his career?

[Censored], [censored] and [censored] are the only words to describe Watts succumbing to injury too...

So no one on here has suggested Kent. He's driven me nuts all year in much the same way jkh has... but I remember before he came back into the side I said the side needed what he brings badly. A leading high half forward who can kick the leather off it to get it deep. I'm not saying he's fulfilled his promise... but with watts out... is he a smart play? He didn't get a go in the jlt against west coast. They won't have much tape on him...

on paper... what do people think?

On Kent. Goodwin has shown his hand loud and clear. No passengers.

He likes a style that I call "swarming all over them". That's what we did to the Dogs. Swarmed all over them and didn't let up. We did it do C'wood, to Adelaide. Have done it for periods in most games this season.

That's why Hannan gets a game over Kent. Kent likes to take his foot off the pedal.

That's why Harmes is in the team. That's why Bugg is getting games.

That's why Watts had a rocket put up him in the preseason.

Guys like Hunt, Harmes, Hannan are bundles of energy with hurt factor, in more ways than one. And show full buy-in.

I think that's spot on Ted.  Notably there was lots of encouragement for Kent at training from his team mates and Stretch too, including a reassuring arm around Billy's waste from the senior coach at one point.  I've no doubt that everyone on the list knows what they need to work on, whether in the starting 22 currently or not.

Wagner or JKH will be the second 'in' now that Watts is probably out. Can't see them going for Kent for the reasons outlined by Ted above - our half forward foot soldiers like ANB, Harmes and Bugg are all in because they put in. Kent is at a major crossroads in his career in my opinion - he's good enough if he's driven enough, but he has something to prove before being selected again.

I'd expect Wagner or JKH will come in to the side. Goodwin said he wants to reward form - these two are the leading Casey players by all reports.

TMac and Pedersen will have to play as our key talls. Yuck.

At least it defers the talls structural problem/decision for another week.

That's all well and good, but it doesn't address the problem at hand. Hunt, Harmes, Hannan aren't going to be picked over Kent. They're already in the 22. If you're a selector, trotting out a line about effort and swarming doesn't do anything when it comes to picking players. You need to pick a magnet and put it on the board. Kent, JKH, Wags, Stretch... who's it going to be? Going by what you said, probably Wags... but we have lost a mid and a forward and are stacked for defenders.

It's easy to forget but Naitanui is a big out for them along with Kennedy.  i fancy our chances.

I would play Pedersen CHF, Tracca FF with T. Mac running & floating around the forward line. He seems to play better when he's continually on the move

There is no way we should win this match.  6 day break.  No Jones or Watts ( it seems).  At Subiaco with a biased crowd influencing umpiring.  Against a team that beat Geelong last week and have had a 7 day break.

However......

If we do, then start booking time off in September

Not sure if true, but I've heard a couple bits and pieces through the socials that Mark LeCras might be out for West Coast.

Ahh... Watts pulling the old sore hammy card, so he can play his 150th at the MCG the following week... Rest up Champ you've earned it. I'll be there cheering you on!

With Max back in its up to our midfield to take full advantage and to kick goals and provide repeat opportunities by locking  the ball in forward.

Fortunately the past weeks have shown we're spreading the goal kicking load...

Gees I hope Le Cras gets up. he is soft as butter these days, should have been dropped weeks ago

It's amazing to me how few of those goals over the last three weeks have been kicked by a key forward taking a contested mark inside 50 and going back for the set shot.

Demonland Trackwatchers braved the sweltering heat to bring you their Preseason Training observations from Gosch's Paddock on Monday morning. SCOOP JUNIOR'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS I went down today in what were pretty ordinary conditions - hot and windy. When I got there, they were doing repeat simulations of a stoppage on the wing and then moving the ball inside 50. There seemed to be an emphasis on handballing out of the stoppage, usually there were 3 or 4 handballs to

BEST OF THE REST by Meggs

Meggs' Review of Melbourne's AFLW Season 9 ... Congratulations first off to the North Melbourne Kangaroos on winning the 2024 AFLW Premiership. Roos Coach Darren Crocker has assembled a team chock-full of competitive and highly skilful players who outclassed the Brisbane Lions in the Grand Final to remain undefeated throughout Season 9. A huge achievement in what was a dominant season by North. For Melbourne fans, the season was unfortunately one of frustration and disappointment
