Vince is a booming kick and instinctive footballer. He's not a technician. And clearly not the best with ball in hand and time to think.

Playing him down back has been an absolute blunder. For the team and for him. He was in career best form ffs.

Put him in the heat of the guts, let him slam it forward, run around for dish off shots at goal from 50 and rough up some timid mids. It's his bread and butter. Saw it the second he went into the middle.

Stamp him never to play down back again.

With Lewis and Hibberd back and Wagner to likely get his chance soon, I think you will get your wish DA.

All of Vince, Hunt and Salem released to the midfield is a lovely thought. We are seriously deep there.

We will beat Hawthorn next week whether we get Hogan back or not, our forward line with Hannan in it is mobile and unpredictable, we have several avenues to goal at last.

Our backline is starting to gel and our midfield is better than theirs, but best of all, they are completely lacking in confidence and Alistair is now facing the reality of coaching a side without superstars.

Today was a poor game but we won and that's all I care about, 4 points is the same for a good win or a bad win. I don't care if Daniher kicked poorly today because he usually does, we played them with a few of our better players out and on their dung heap.

Goodwin has got the players believing that they can win any game with the team that gets picked and having missing players is irrelevant, there are no excuses and that can only be good long term for the MFC.

I agree with that he credit being given to our better players today. But the forward line credits usually seem to miss Hannan.

Although he was a bit patchy, I thought he had a really good game overall, for his level of experience. A couple of strong marks and goals in the second half really helped settle is and consolidate our lead. He shows a strong competitive spirit and attacks a contest with everything you want to see in a young player.

Is going to be a smaller 'medium' forward) version of Fyfe given a few more pre-seasons. Will consistently be our leading goal scorer within 3 to 4 years. Kid is a natural.

You may as well give up 'Webber'.  Some people can't see past their biases or past a few clangers which all players have.  Even today's hero, Pedobear (whom I love) had 8.

I couldn't see the game but heard on ABC that at the start of the 3rd qtr we had 7 in defence and T McD was the 'spare'.  He almost immediately kicked a goal.  Not quite a momentum turning piece of play but really significant for the game.  T Mc more than did his job today.

I might add putting Frost on Daniher for the game and freeing T Mac was a bit of coaching masterstroke.

Frost on Joey FTW! Mind you he kicked like a spud today. Can play on his day though. People have short memories. Had Reiwoldt kicked as badly last week we would have won. Had Joey kicked as well as Reiwoldt last week...well who knows. Things might have been different.

Well, well.

Finally got to our villa in Ubud after a reasonably stressful 10 hours with 2 x 2 yo's on their first plane ride.

After checking in, our friendly housekeeper gave us the wifi password. I put it off for an hour for fear of revealing a result that would almost certainly have put the kibosh on any gregarious holiday mood.

As I gave a little yelp after seeing the result, I could sense the relief from my ever patient partner.

BEST START TO A HOLIDAY EVER

now, I'm gleaning Ill just watch the 2nd half replay?!

Whatever- 4 ugly points in the bag, bring on the Poos & Wees!

Can't wait to get young Wagner back in the team.He and Hunt formed an exciting and attacking half back line last year.  A very talented defender. Melksham will have to improve or else its Casey for him.

I wonder what our win loss record would be if we had started playing Pedersen three weeks ago?

5-1 but almost certainly 4-2.

Can't believe those who kept shouting down the idea of getting him in the side, even as a second ruck. Hopefully they saw today exactly what he can bring to the side. He's no superstar but he is a good role player who frees up others to be more dangerous too.

That's the thing; after going to the last two losses and a forgettable one against Carlscum, I'm scared of coming home!

Its that personal hex/jinx  thing where you think the team has lost cos you wore the wrong coloured jocks!

I just realised we scored 14.4 from the time Watts missed a dribbler to Hannan's final goal. At least we made amends for the Geelong catastrophe. And it's another reason why Joe Daniher can't be taken seriously. Conversion is the most important stat in footy by far.

Looking forward to Pedersen putting similar performances together for the rest of the year. Notwithstanding help of Watts of course who seems to be thriving on the workload!

He's 31. There aren't all that many AFL footballers who last much past then. If he's no longer in career best form, it's as much to do with the fact that he's getting on as anything else.

Except for short spurts, his days in the engine room are almost certainly behind him. Which is why he's being played down back.

Well, a terrific weekend. Got a bit loosy goosy on Saturday night and got married to the Hawthorn missus (still haven't converted her). And then enjoyed the all important four points against those floggy Bombers. They looked tired and slow, whereas we were energetic, switched on and fierce. The kicking for two quarters was terrible, but our effort closed that gap.

A great game from Viney, Oliver, Petracca, Lewis, Pedersen, Hibberd and Frost. Hunt had his moments (but kicked poorly), Dom (also kicked poorly again - WTF is going on? I can't recall him hitting a target by foot) and Bernie looks better in the midfield - get him out of defence, he's hopeless there. Thought Hannan played a nice game too.

If Viney's game is a sign of things to come in the next few weeks, our midfield will start to look scary.

Oliver keeps going about his business. We say that every week. But 18 possies going into the last. Was glad to see him get above 30 again. What a star.

Frost's kicking has really improved, while Hibberd and Lewis make our backline look very, very good.

Handy game from Pedo. Let's see what his consistency is like.

From an intensity perspective, Jack Watts was very, very ordinary. He played from behind, failed to tackle stronger and probably went at about 10% all day. But he's a clever, skilful player and things went his way today.

Happy wedding present and a bit unexpected, as was the St Kilda win. Unlike my confidence going in to the Freo and Richmond games. Maybe I should keep expecting to lose?

Finally, a little thing I noticed was Petracca slapping Hurley on the arse and vice versa. Does anyone know if they're mates?

AF - most of this is on the money but it's far too optimistic. You should take your good cheer back to the marital boudoir while it's still fresh and skip the less stimulating moaning on D'land for a week or so.  Congrats btw.

I thought this might be the game after which Demonland gave rightful praise to Tom McDonald. I now realise that's never going to happen. Those people who continually (zzzzzzzzzzz........) criticise him for his imperfections are clearly unaware that the football world at large sees him as one of our most important players, our most important backmen, and one of the league's best. He got media votes today, but still gets shamelessly and pathetically pilloried on Demonland.

Just watched the replay and the commentators got stuck into him as well. He undoes so much of his good work with horrible decision making and dreadful kicking.

He was really important last week with his intercept marking, but this week he was a bit of a liability.

Not a great turnout by melbourne fans. Maybe 5,000.

10-15,000. There were 44,000 there. They had 30,000-35,000.

Agreed. His kicking actually seems to be getting worse. Won't get dropped after collecting 29, but as soon as he fails to gather a lot of it, I'd send him back to Casey to work on his kicking. He did kick a perfect pass to Trac for his last goal - kicked it goalside for once. But yeah, really struggling with his kicking.

I've read nothing but criticism of TMacs kicking today

#spoileralert

Not one mention of the torp of the outside of the boot to slot one in the third. Even the great Dunstall said he'd never seen that! (Not sure it was intentional).

PS I'm not a fan of his kicking, btw; but I do feel at ease when he's camped under a ball coming into d50 (#goodyspeak)

im also delighted Wattsy shouted out to Hoges; but nonplussed that he didn't also shout out to A_F who made the journey with newly installed ball and chain!

Thought it was pretty ordinary too, mate. Only the ring accompanied me today.

Loved Jack's shout out to Jesse though. Great to hear.

The big positive I took from the game was Viney, Tyson, and Jones. Both have seemed flat the last few weeks, especially Viney and Tyson.

During the second half all three really appeared to be working their way back into form a little, still a way to go but hopefully the start of a great streak of form from the three of them, especially exiting as with the three of them flying we are a much much better side and will trouble anyone.

Jones used the ball poorly today, but I think we underestimated just how much better Viney, Tyson and Jones are with Lewis in the side.

I have a sneaky suspicion why....J Lewis!

His record with the Dees, 3-0 and will be 4-0 next week. Jones IMO is clearly a better player when Lewis is in the team. I`ve said it since our loss to Geelong, Lewis is our most important player simply due to his leadership.

That's right. And as Watts said, he's a calming influence. Amazing a player can have that much impact in such a short time at the club. Brilliant stuff!

This issue is, mate, where does he go when he's not in the midfield. We can't play him there the whole game. Maybe on a wing, but I can't see him playing forward.

I think his cliff is coming up still. He lost his feet a number of times today and he just looks old to me. We'll see though. Hopefully he can recapture some of his 2015 form.

Interestingly, we currently have the 5th best attack in the comp. Not bad for a forward line that has been borderline dysfunctional at times.

Helps when you dominate the opposition for possession.

I have been enjoying the read on Bomber blitz about the game.

The main thing I took away from it was that the Bomber fans do not rate us as a team. Hopefully the next year is about getting us some respect in the general football community.

On a more interesting note here is an extract from an insightful post looking at the game from a Bomber viewpoint:

I was (un)fortunate enough to watch the Carlton game from L2 at the MCG.

Today, I thought we were in trouble in the first 90 seconds of the game when Melbourne set up a zone defence exactly the same as Carlton did - and I mean almost exactly. Namely, stronger concentration in the corridor but allowing us to go wide if we wanted coming out of defence

Like the game Carlton game - and without the excuse of poor conditions - we did exactly that. Rarely trying to use running players to cut through the zone or try and hit up passes. Instead we went slow and wide with short passes and the player marking near the boundary then didn't even try and find someone in-board and just bombed it down the line....where of course it came back with interest. This all happened at the end of Q2 on Anzac Day. It was best illustrated in Q4 (I think) when we tried to switch and Hurley received it just inside D50. He already had Gleeson out wide and went to him - he hadn't bothered looking inboard to the point of the centre square where Heppell, unopposed had led to. Well Gleeson marked it out wide and showed no urgency at all so the Melbourne players pushed up and blocked the paces....until Jobe pushed through just forward of the wing for what would have been an easy 15m pass inboard and forward and Gleeson totally ignored him.

Gleeson just bombed it long down the line and of course we were outnumbered and the Demons swept the ball away and scored. This is precisely what happened against Carlton time and time again and today was a straight repeat. The players gradually lost confidence and some of the skill errors were as a result of not having options and not knowing what to do. Only McGrath & McKenna actually tried to run and break the lines hit up options (not always successfully) and it's run from behind that breaks up zones - just like at the start of Q4 on Anzac Day when two early Pie behinds resulted in coast-to-coast goals for us because Goddard & Merrett hit targets on the kick-outs who quickly handballed to a running player from behind who cut through the Collingwood players and opened the game up.

After half-time the Demons got right on top in clearances and that contributed to the score blowing out.

Coaching - Worsfold was unimaginative in a way that all modern coaches are. None make too many positional changes as players are now trained to play specific positions. All coaches want is a lift in intensity & effort, especially around the ball. Which is where we were found wanting. To have only 46 tackles on the day was pathetic (Demons only had 48). That lack of intensity was was shown by 3 Demon goals from 3 free kicks against our younger players (McGrath (Melbourne's first), McKenna (Q3), Tippa (Q3). On each occasion it was this younger player going to fight for the ball without one teammate assisting with a shepherd or block. Senior players just looked on. We were seriously off our game.
