The Twilight Grand Final

Featured Replies

Well it seems we might have a twilight grand final in 2017

From a personal viewpoint it does not worry me but why not go the full hog and make it a 7pm start

https://www.theguardian.com/sport/2017/mar/16/broad-acceptance-from-afl-fans-over-twilight-grand-final-proposal

"A twilight AFL grand final seems increasingly certain for 2017, with an announcement to be made within days of next weekend’s opening round.

AFL chief executive Gillon McLachlan said there was now “broad acceptance” from fans for the move, with several AFL captains including Scott Pendlebury, Nat Fyfe and Joel Selwood also offering support."

late night

Night GF isnt wanted by players or AFL. twighlight has "proven" to be the best time slot for channel 7... I mean the game...

So the GF will start 2 hours later? What's the big deal? The media seem to think this is a big story

No. Leave the game alone.

Every freaking year the norbits that run the show want to tweak it, and they always get it wrong. Always.

Leave it alone. It ain't broke, don't try and fix it.

Don't do it. The mcc members line up when the sun comes up and i'm already well to full by the time the game starts. I want to see Melbourne's premiership.

Works for me.  Keep the Grand Final for the afternoon and play the Frand Final after it as the twilight game.  Win/Win in my book.

Play it whenever they want, i just want to see us back in one. Lets face it they could start the grand final at 8am we would still watch it.

Gillon McLachlan claims to have "forgotten" to raise the timing of the Grand Final at yesterday's Commission meeting. It is impossible to believe that an item as important to the AFL and of such interest to the community at large would be raised orally and not supported by written arguments. At the very least it should be listed for discussion on a written Agenda which the Commission should be following for its meetings. So, either Gill's a liar (when he said he "forgot" to raise it) or he's incompetent (for not having the matter listed in the Agenda for discussion). Or both.

They've agreed to it it will be announced just prior to round 1 or on the Friday following the Blues/Tigers so it will get lost in the news cycle

As long as we are in it I don't care. Personally I wouldn't mind a Sunday 4.45 pm GF. We will have the time slot advantage.

It's gone from "won't happen" to "maybe one day" to "probably eventually" to "broad acceptance" (ie, this year) in a very short time, all without any shift in public opinion (which is mostly against it).

The main argument put forward is that the half time entertainment will be more entertaining! (Low bar to jump)

What could have changed? Channel 7's $$$$ perhaps?

A great pity.

An era is over and there has been so much to love about the normal afternoon granny.

Good for the whole family and the myriad activities organised before, during and after the game.

Done for TV/media/financial reasons.

Justified by the line that the fans and the players want it.

How about polling members of all AFL clubs and see if fans approve?

I may be wrong and out of touch but I doubt there would be a simple majority in favour.

The saddest thing in all this is that the Red Sherrin will no longer be seen on GF day

I will miss it

Every poll that's been done shows a majority against it. Players more than the public.

Can't admit that though. The corporate paymasters might get upset.

The overwhelming bulk of finals games are played at night and have been for some years.

Twilight is neither here nor there.... let's just bite the bullet and play the game at night........

Not to go all Ellen Lovejoy on this but... won't someone think of the children!? (and by that I mean the children's parents)

I'm worried that the later the game is pushed the more that is going to reduce my post match celebrations with the kids.

Is there a attendance or ratings problem that I am unaware of??  The only reason to move the starting time is so they can have fireworks at the end... that's a pretty ordinary reason IMHO.

They are! You will now be able to take Samson to his swimming lessons, Aquitaine to her jazz ballet, Taniisha to choir practice, Prosecco to cultural awareness face painting, and still have time to rock up to the footy!

I think you'll find there are another 20 or 30 million reasons for doing it, that Gil won't talk about. Possibly because he fears a backlash. Why would there be a backlash, Gil? What is there to hide?

Or maybe he's already forgotten those extra reasons!

I'm all for a twilight GF. I'm not keen on a night one though. I love how a game transitions from day into night. He's right in that with the right crowd, it's a surreal atmosphere. It already finishes with the sun set behind the stand anyway. What's another hour or two?

Love how after consulting fans, we get told due to their opinions the GF won’t change in 2017, then in 2018 without any consultation we get told fans opinions are changing.

Nice on Dill.

  • DRAFT: The Next Generation

It was not long after the announcement that Melbourne's former number 1 draft pick Tom Scully was departing the club following 31 games and two relatively unremarkable seasons to join expansion team, the Greater Western Giants, on a six-year contract worth about $6 million, that a parody song based on Adele's hit "Someone Like You" surfaced on social media. The artist expressed lament over Scully's departure in song, culminating in the promise, "Never mind, we'll find someone like you," although I suspect that the undertone of bitterness in this version exceeded that of the original.
