Melbourne injury list: round one

Sam Frost (toe) – test

Colin Garland (knee) – season

Michael Hibberd (Achilles) – 2-3 weeks

Liam Hulett (hip) – 3-4 weeks

Jay Kennedy-Harris (arm) – 2-3 weeks

Mitch King (knee) – 5 weeks

Aaron vandenBerg (heel) – 4-6 weeks

Josh Wagner (fibula) – 2-3 weeks

Mitch White (ankle) – 2-3 weeks

We always seem to end up with a lot of injuries before round 1. Luckily not our best players, but still a fairly large list.

Just read the article on the club app time stamped as 10am this morning! Why did they wait so long to tell us!!

Most rookie upgrades are done just ahead of selection, by all teams.

IMO there are three their that would be playing on Saturday.

Frost, Vandenberg and Hibberd. They will be missed and may be the difference between winning and losing.

By that I am going to say no watts

That would be very disappointing. He is our best goal assist and best kick for goal. IMO, if he is left out that will hurt us.

yeah sometimes, other times they can be done on monday.. or the week before... really its completely random there have been rookie elevations dotted throughout the whole week. It doesnt really matter but like i said earlier they have played selection very close to the chest this week.

There are some big surprises!!!!!!

That is all I can say.

Any chance of a list of things that would surpise you? just so we can narrow down our wild speculation.

If watts doesn't play it's for 1 reason and that he doesn't add enough forward pressure, if we are to beat the saints our forward pressure needs to be relentless for the whole game, we know we will win enough in the middle and the mids will put pressure on but we can't afford for saints to run the ball out of our back line as easy as west coast did we will get slaughtered

Surely it is a wise policy to wait till the last minute. What if the rookie is run over by a bus after he's been promoted?(or injured at training/gym).

Oh yeah, how does he look?

He wasn't the leanest back in his day!

Will it be the plugga approach with him (too big to get around)

Hmmm, I'd be surprised if there are some surprises.

I think maybe some disappointing selections might be more likely.

Its nearly impossible to have everyone available for a given match, even St Kilda who have a much shorter injury list than ours have Leigh Montagna and Koby Stevens out of their best side.

The old adage that you're only as good as your replacements rings true, we need to get to a point where the depth of the squad can cover a "normal" amount of unavailable players. This game is a great test of that.

last year we had very few, in fact not many all year

only one of the above is best 22 IMO. 4-5 are best 30 though so hopefully we dont get any more or we will be tested

UP IN LIGHTS by Whispering Jack

Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
