Didn't he write 'Death on the Installment Plan' and 'Long journey to the end of the night'?

While I was underwhelmed last night, I've looked at the highlight packages and thought about what I wanted coming into the draft - speed, hardness, and the ability to kick the football. While I didn't know these 2 existed I was worried that we were going to get 2 boys without kicking skills as most of this draft were average at best kicks. The highlights and scouting reports show great kicks, speed, hardness for the contest (great tackles) and a disregard for anything other than the goals (which we dont have a lot of).

While I hope that our best 22 is so strong they struggle to break in, I hope they put on a lot of pressure with Hulett in a dominant Casey forward line.

Dion may well be our own Hayden Ballantine. Don't underestimate the value of a serial pest.

Ballantyne was who I thought of when watching the highlights too RTG

Yeah, glad I wasn't alone. The one video I've seen (on Demonland) doesn't exactly thrill but, honestly, how would we know? I'm not as sold on Kennedy as some others and I like the idea of pressure for those spots.

I 'm not sold on Kennedy and see him possibly in his last year with us.

McCartney rates JKH, assume that is why he is still on the list, they tried him on a wing at Casey for a couple of games towards the end of the season and he did ok

Rehab have been instructed to build him properly so when he gets on the field, he stays on the field, similar to approach with Hunt

Or turn into a wanderer ...

Looks quick, angry and  good tackler. Could be anything or nothing. A bit of a surprise considering we have Garlett, JKH and Kennedy on oir list.

I'm not sold on any of those holding a first 22 spot all year. Two of them potentially will be gone by years end. Probably reaffirms why we would have another swing with a late pick particularly when we are expected to play an even more attacking game style in coming years.

To Dion, and your family (I'm sure some of you are reading this thread by now)

Welcome aboard. Bring that full on aggression and forward pressure every minute, of every single game, and in the next few years you may just end up a premiership player for the Dees.

You have a skill set that we lack, and your success will largely be determined by your attitude and application.

Be a complete bastard when hunting your opponent, and you might play more games than you think.....

faulty.

JKH is a high half forward/wing player. Good runner, good reader of the play around the ground and a nice kick.

Kennedy is a half forward/inside midfielder. His strengths are winning contested ball around the packs and a burst from stoppages.

Neither of those guys have the pace, tackling or one on one ability to be consistent AFL small forwards in a designated role. They are handy because they can fill the spot whilst bringing some versatility but if we want a more traditional small forward to compete with Garlett then we needed to draft one.

Whelan mk II

Tough competitive can finish ( 17 goals in six games ) could prove a real livewire and possibly play as a midfielder in future .

Unsure why we chose another small forward when we have no key backs to take on gorilla forwards. If Tmac goes down (who already struggles), our next option is Omac...or Wagner

Frost is our Gorilla Tamer I would say.  He has the power to go with them and the pace to run off them.

Good to have you back chicken little.

Is he indigenous?

I have a good feeling about this kid.

Yep. Seems tough, quick and knows where the goals are. Obviously has leadership qualities, so hopefully he can work with Nev on that side of things.

Maybe that's exactly why we drafted him...

Can't believe we picked this bloke.

Anyone know anything about him?

Just a simple question, WJ

Why not?

Big ups to Celine.

  • PREVIEW: Essendon

Not long ago, the narrative surrounding Melbourne was steeped in pessimism. There was some concern among the pundits (and even some fans) that the club would arrive at the AFL’s Gather Round still winless, vulnerable to a familiar adversary in the Essendon Football Club, and facing significant scrutiny from an ever-critical media on a national stage. Things have changed.

  • REPORT: Gold Coast

Steven King astutely identified the issues that had plagued the Melbourne Football Club over the past two and a half seasons when he auditioned for the newly created coaching role. The side that had claimed the 2021 premiership had become stodgy, slow-paced, and hesitant to take the initiative.

  • PODCAST: Gold Coast

I’ll be away for the next few weeks, so Binman will be holding the fort for our podcasts covering the Suns, Bombers and Lions matches. As a result, there will be no live podcasts during this period, and we won’t be taking calls or voicemails. Binman will still be dipping into this thread to select a few questions to answer, while also combining the long-form Stats Files podcast with the Demonland Podcast for these shows. Your questions and comments are a huge part of what makes the podcast work, so please post anything you’d like to ask or say below and we’ll do our best to give you a shout-out on the show. Please try to keep each post focused on one specific topic or player to make podcast preparation a little easier. If you have multiple topics you’d like to raise, please put them in separate posts.
