nope - it's just an opinion like everything else. And my opinion is pretty clear - anyone can critique a player and posters will agree or disagree with it - when a critique respectfully highlights a players flaws or shortcomings or praises the players skills to the heavens there is robust debate on it. When a poster resorts to derogatory name calling or plain nasty send off's it usually gets called out and rightly so. It is unnecessary, adds nothing to the debate and leads me to believe that the poster may struggle to formulate a well reasoned response.. If you feel it is positive posting to write "good riddance" about a delisted player then don't be surprised if other posters call you out.  But hey that's just my opinion.

Ok fair points.

However I reserve the right to have opinions that are not "positive posts".

You can say whatever you like but again, my point has nothing to do with positive or negative posting. My point has always been about respectful vs disrespectful posting and whether comments that can be labelled as plain nasty serve any purpose at all. Saying "good riddance" to a player serves exactly what purpose and furthers the debate how ?

My thoughts on a Dawes are hardly positive. He was drafted as a key forward who simply did not take enough marks, impose himself on enough games or kick enough goals. Judging his time with us it would not be considered a success.

At least we helped him and Stefan further their prospects in the law.

Lets hope he grabs his legal career with both hands.

But will he be an Essendon or Melbourne type lawyer ?

B$.  You wrote "If you feel it is positive posting to write "... I don't think it's positive. It's passionate. I stick by it. It doesn't have to be positive on a blog about one of the most unsuccessful football clubs of the modern era. I couldn't care less if you think it's classy or not. He was useless to us as a team. I don't believe all the press about his leadership qualities. Leadership in footy involves current ability on field.

Good for you. Just don't be surprised when posters call you out.

There is passionate and there is rude - and then there is passionate expressed rudely. Where exactly saying "good riddance" to a player delisted falls - well.. each to their own.

All the other stuff is opinion and all good. He was useless to the team  - he certainly did not produce enough on most occasions. Don't believe the press about his leadership qualities ? I disagree  - i think he was a leader  - an example was working with and mentoring the young forwards when he was out injured. Leadership in footy involves current ability on the field ? Yes - amongst other things. Leadership off the field, on the training track.. But most footballers who have good ability but don't display leadership stay on list. If you can get a footballer with both ability and leadership all the better. But as Dawes found out that a footballer with good leadership skills who cannot get on field enough and when on field doesn't produce enough wont last on a list.

We got sold a dud. Then again with Harry. Benken is looking like that too

Oh well, the price of dealing with Collingwood.

Still they've now got Howe and Dunn

I guess the lesson is when you are getting beaten up you take whatever you can from a a better team. When you are on top they want yours.

Not being hard on Chris, but but we bought high and sold for nothing

Like all trades - you trade and hope.

Some work and some don't  - Bernie Vince has been a win. Daniel Cross for free was a definite win.

I liked the idea of Dawes at the time but he has definitely been a loss.

"H" and Benken - "H" hasn't worked and Benken  - too early but on exposed form to date it looking less likely to be a win.

This year we have Melksham, Lewis and Hibberd - I am hoping for at least 2 out of these to work.

We didnt get sold anything. We recruited two ex-premiership players.

We knew their worth, we knew what they were capable of, we knew everything about them. We live with our choices. It's not the players fault (so long as they gave or give their all).

I am no Dawes fan but he did IMO give his all. His failure was not due to lack of effort.

Id actually argue we didn't...i.e  We thought, quite rightly possibly that what they might deliver was ...say  'X"  ...and  "Y"     we've at best got a fraction on either.. So as far as that goes..I reckon we've done extremely poorly.  Thats not a slight on the person(s) per se at all, just an evaluation of  the football equation.  Both seem quite decent blokes. For what it's worth.

Why are people so coy about calling anything for what it is, and just making apologies for  things that don't work out.. What is...IS... But what IS>>>IS !!!!

That is why I will on occassion call out a poster.

We can write lines on the failings of Dawes as a footballer. That's a reality. However, he, like 95% of other "failures" give it a shot but due to frail bodies, lack of ability, game going past them or just plain age are not a success.

I understand why they are cut and in nearly all cases agree with the decision but giving them a kick up the ar$e on the way out is just so unnecessary.

It's not passionate, it's not being a tough club that no longer accepts mediocrity - it is just plain nasty.

Average AFL salary is 380k, the rumour was Dawes was paid 500k. Hardly call that "huge money" when taken in context.

Do you begrudge Trengove being paid by the way?

If you think 500K is not huge money in any context, then I suggest you spend time with a few billion less fortunate on this planet! Chris Dawes is not short of a dollar or 3

The context is AFL players, not the community. Wouldn't have thought that needed pointing out.

    DELUGE by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons overcame their inaccuracy and the wet inhospitable conditions to overrun the lowly Northern Bullants at Genis Steel Oval in Cramer Street, Preston on Saturday. It was an eerie feeling entering the ground that in the past hosted many VFA/VFL greats of the past including the legendary Roy Cazaly. The cold and drizzly rain and the sparse crowd were enough to make one want to escape to the nearby Preston Market and hang out there for the afternoon. In the event, the fans

    INSANITY by Whispering Jack

Somehow, the Melbourne Football Club managed it twice in the course of a week. Coach Simon Goodwin admitted it in his press conference after the loss against the Brisbane Lions in a game where his team held a four goal lead in the third term:   "In reality we went a bit safe. Big occasion, a lot of young players playing. We probably just went into our shell a bit. "There's a bit to unpack in that last quarter … whether we go into our shells a bit late in the game."   Well

    UNBACKABLE by The Oracle

They’re billing the Brisbane Lions as a sleeping giant — the best team outside the top eight —and based on their form this month they’re a definite contender for September AFL action. Which is not exactly the best of news if you happen to be Melbourne, the visiting team this week up at the Gabba.  Even though they are placed ahead of their opponent on the AFL table, and they managed to stave off defeat in their last round victory over North Melbourne, this week’s visitors to the Sunshi

    WILDCARDS by KC from Casey

Casey’s season continued to drift into helplessness on Sunday when they lost another home game by a narrow margin, this time six points, in their Round 13 clash with North Melbourne’s VFL combination. The game was in stunning contrast to their last meeting at the same venue when Casey won the VFL Wildcard Match by 101 points. Back then, their standout players were Brodie Grundy and James Jordon who are starring in the AFL with ladder leaders, the Sydney Swans (it turned out to be their last
