Can someone please confirm this for me. If we have four selectors each rating players out of ten across 22 games, that would give a maximum score of 880. How is it then that winner only has 407? I can imagine nobody would have got many votes in our worst performances, but surely across the year our better players would average more than 5 out of 10?

As an aside, Gawn not winning shows the limitation of the voting system. Congratulations to both Viney and Jones, but I would say both had good - very good years, rather than great years.

Coaches look at much more than stats eg sticking to game plan, following instructions, leadership acts, team acts, pressure acts etc etc  That average of 5 from 10 for the best performer means all of our players have considerable improvement in the eyes of the coaches.   No argument there.

What I like about our voting system (unlike a 3, 2, 1 type system) is it gives a much truer picture of where an individual player is at and his improvement to be made.  Everyone can score votes (not just 3 players) and each player scores according to their contribution on the day.

A comparison of 2016 votes vs 2015 shows that the coaches think the team has certainly improved.  Last year the top 5 scored a total of 1511 votes, this year the top 5 scored 1845 votes.  Again we would all agree the team has improved.

So... Jesse Hogan (21) finishes 8th in the Bluey, but Hunt (21) finishes outside the top 10 and wins the best young player award...

Weird.

(Not that I disagree about Hunt btw)

I think Jesse is probably a bit beyond receiving this type of award (even though he is obviously still young etc).

I suspect they also wanted Hunt to get some recognition, given that he did not receive a Rising Star nomination during the season and Petracca, Oliver and Harmes did.

I seem to recall that Roos commented on this a few weeks ago in a what that suggested the club thought this was a bit unfair.

Gee I thought Gawn would bolt in, he carried us all year.

In fact I am very surprised that Max didn't "street it in"

Not saying Viney isn't a worthy winner but MAX Gawn this year has been a superstar!

Thats my take!

Maybe the club's idea of young olayer is similar to the rules for the rising star ie certain number of games, etc

I vaguely recall (though could be completely wrong) that back in the 70s or maybe 80s, we were awarding "best first year player" awards to experienced players who had joined us from other teams. To illustrate the point while ignoring the question of merit, it would be the equivalent of, say, Heretier Lumumba winning it last year.

So, there are at least six different ways this award could be made. Using 2016 as an example:

  • most votes in the B&F for a player new to the club but not new to AFL football (in 2016 the best result in the B&F from an "import" was Tom Bugg. He wouldn't have won, because he scored fewer votes than others who would be eligible.)
  • most votes in the B&F for a player drafted to the club in the most recent draft who is new to AFL football altogether and who played his first game in 2016 (Josh Wagner would have won on this criterion.)
  • most votes in the B&F for a player drafted to the club, who is new to AFL football, but has been on the list for one or more years and who played his first game in 2016 (eg, Jayden Hunt)
  • subjective assessment of eligible players under each of the options described above.

My personal preference is the third dot point above.

Have done some research. It would appear that Garry Baker won the Best First year player award in 1974 having already played a couple of seasons with the Bulldogs. However, he's the only person I found who would appear not to be a true "first year player". I had thought someone like Brian Wilson or Peter Moore had won the award. I was clearly wrong.

Great effort by Hunt to nearly crack the top 10 in his first season.

Especially considering he didn't debut until round 4. Could've finished ~8th had he debuted round 1.

Players often say that peer recognition is the most satisfying.  It is decided by the Most Valuable Player award voted on by all players in the comp.  http://www.aflplayers.com.au/

Warning Alert: picket fence - turn away now:unsure:!

MFC nominees are:

MVP NOMINEES: Jack Viney, Max Gawn, Nathan Jones

BEST FIRST YEAR NOMINEE: Josh Wagner

MOST COURAGEOUS NOMINEE: Jack Viney

CAPTAIN: Nathan Jones

Interesting that Wagner got the nod ahead of Oliver for 'Best First Year Nominee' with 14/13 games played respectively.  Obviously highly thought of.  This suggests (to me) Wagner will be offered a contract on the main list for next year.

Hunt was easily the most consistent out of the lot (Petracca, Oliver, Harmes and OMac). They may have had individual games where they performed better but across the season he was easily the best.

I thought it was interesting Frosty didn't feature in the top 20 after 16 or 17 games. And Oliver didn't really feature either. I know he didn't play a lot of game time but clearly has areas of his game they want him to work on.

The result really tells you what the coaches are thinking and clearly they value Wagner a lot.......

I heard from a very reliable source today, that before the Geelong game the players were cooked and according to the source the club thought they had about 2 quarters left in them.

Take that for what you want.

Turns out they were correct

On face value reflecting on the effort it seems pretty accurate

Club should have told supporters to not buy tickets if the players were ill prepared...

I'm just trying to work out how this message gets relayed. Does the club say to the players, "We think you're cooked and therefore you won't win. We're telling you this because we have to tell our supporters not to come. But go out there and try hard anyway."

As a long term resident of Waalitj Marawar, I am moved to warn my fellow Narrm fans that a  danger game awaits. The locals are no longer the easybeats who stumbled, fumbled and bumbled their way to the good fortune of gathering the number one draft pick and a generational player in Harley Reid last year. They are definitely better than they were then.   Young Harley has already proven his worth with some stellar performances for a first year kid playing among men. He’s taken hangers, k

OVER YET? by KC from Casey

The Friday evening rush hour clash of two of the VFL’s 2024 minnows, Carlton and the Casey Demons was excruciatingly painful to watch, even if it was for the most part a close encounter. I suppose that since the game had to produce a result (a tie would have done the game some justice), the four points that went to Casey with the win, were fully justified because they went to the best team. In that respect, my opinion is based on the fact that the Blues were a lopsided combination that had

Our game is one where the result is often decided by centimetres; the touch of a fingernail, a split-second decision made by a player or official, the angle of vision or the random movement of an oblong ball in flight or in its bounce and trajectory. There is one habit that Melbourne seems to have developed of late in its games against Carlton which is that the Demons keep finding themselves on the wrong end of the stick in terms of the fine line in close games at times when centimetres mak

    MELBOURNE BUSINESS by The Oracle

In days of old, this week’s Thursday night AFL match up between the Demons and the Blues would be framed on the basis of the need to redress the fact that Carlton “stole” last year’s semi final away from Melbourne and with it, their hopes for the premiership.  A hot gospelling coach might point out to his charges that they were the better team on the night in all facets and that poor kicking for goal and a couple of lapses at the death cost them what was rightfully theirs. Moreover, now was
