I think Ben Ken for Harmes is firming for me and the possibility of White if upgraded to be in the mix. Playing very very consistent footy at Casey and like the way he uses the ball.

If we want to get cute continue with Frost instead of O Mac and bring White in as a PACY rebound defender.

Won't happen though

I would love to see spencer come in and hang around in the goal square when not rucking, same with Gawn. Put hogan up on a wing and dawes at chf.  Ben kennedy in for Harmes and Kent would make way for Spencer.  I think continued ruck dominance is critical in us getting first touch on the ball, so we should ensure there is no respite for the collingwood big men. Also keeping spencer or gawn resting in the forward line will keep one of the big backs at home to stop Spencer or Gawn marking or at least make a serious contest when the ball goes down there. This will have to suck up at least one of the better collingwood backmen reducing the pressure on both dawes and Hogan. Hogan already roams, so let him roam more easily. We still want him running forward for goals and I think he can do that better if he is running into the forward line rather than running out of the forward line to look for passes.

I didn't particularly rate Dawes' game yesterday but they're not going to drop Dawes after one game.

Have we dropped anyone this season after one game? I'm not sure. We gave Michie, ANB and Newton at least two games each.

Dawes will make a difference against Collingwood. They are stretched for talls down back. We should be able to find a mismatch for one of our forwards. The rest is up to the midfield.

Should be an interesting game!  Leaky zone defence vs leaky zone defence?  Whoever gets out the back most, wins!

Port scored umpteen goals (7 uncontested from the goal square) by getting out the back of the Pies' zone defence when they went too far up the ground.  Exactly, what Port did against us!  Except this time it was their small forwards rather than Dixon.

So Garlett and Kennedy play.  Not sure who goes out of Harmes or Kent...lean towards Kent out - a bit too uncommitted for my liking yesterday.

Changed  my mind from last night after today's game. I'd almost forgotten how bad our back half kicking was yesterday with Salem or Bernie down there.....Bugg kicking in, hmmmm. OMac out for White, do is a wonderful and long kick. We need to cut through defences, the most important kicks are the first penetrating pass to about 60 out from opposite defence, and the last pass inside 50. Salem is ideal for the first, Watts, Petracca for the second.

out: Harmes and Omac

in: Kennedy and White

stiff, Grimes, would really like to see him with some game time as a forward role ala Harmes, pushing onto the wing. I still believe Grimes has a role to play for us.

Before the last Pies game I was worried about Cloke the Oaf getting himself back into form against us.

If he turns it on for QB again I think I'll vomit and cry simultaneously.

Who do we think is a good matchup, now we've finally seen we can switch to a bit of man-on-man when necessary?

Frost on Cloke, T Mac on Cox

This assumes Cloke plays, he is a total spud and was woeful today

Maybe other way around? - Frost is a bit taller.

Either/or, let's hope Cloke continues his spudly ways.

I like it, especially the change of White in for O Mac. Only hesitation is that it looks a tad slow. Even just looking at the bench, Hunt alone doesn't compensate for Trengove, Vanders and Grimes.

Reluctantly I think we need to keep one of Harmes and Kent. But they need to be read the riot act. I'll accept 5 touches if it is coupled with 9 tackles. I'd keep Kent for another week and bring in Kennedy for Harmes.

Do you mean they will need to crumb Dawes' dropped marks?

A suggestion I think from the Casey thread of Spencer and Gawn rotation deep forward ie goalsquare would also stretch them and force one tall defender to stay back would do similar things, and allow ruck dominance throughout the game

Do we know why Dunny isn't in the side? I heard a rumour that he turned up to training drunk/hungover..... hence being out of favour and loosing the Vice captaincy.... Can anyone confirm this? or has anyone heard a similar story?
I heard this from a MFC Hall of Famer... that we are family friends of.... Although long since retired and not in the inner sanctum.
I just want to be clear (as i posted something last time with a slight misunderstanding and got ripped to shreds on here)
Sooo this is something i have heard, only here-say until other people can corroborate it.

No. It will be up to the midfield to win the clearance battle, and continue to push the ball forward.

Frost and TMac will take on the pies tall forwards.Cloke will be dropped Witts will come in I believe.

I know, I know, Grimes and Garland. But we need some experience in the backline, it's falling apart. Grimes has been consistently good for Casey and I have a feeling Garls will come back in. Grimes in also means we can keep Vince in the middle more which is important as evidenced by his game on Saturday.

Harmes needs a spell, has been inconsistent the last few weeks, BenKen had a ripper game and will definitely come straight back in. vB wasn't terrible on the weekend, but didn't look 100% and he didn't impact enough, let him get a bit of fitness back at Casey until the bye I reckon.

With you on Kennedy and Garland for Harmes and Omac and would like to see Grimes get an opportunity.  However, a) don't think they'll make 3 further changes after 5 last week (unless by some travesty Bernie is suspended); b) Vandenberg has to be given an opportunity to find form (as do Dawes and Trengove).  And none of the three were horrible.

THE ACCIDENTAL DEMONS by The Oracle

In the space of eight days, the Melbourne Football Club’s plans for the coming year were turned upside down by two season-ending injuries to players who were contending strongly for places in its opening round match against the GWS Giants. Shane McAdam was first player to go down with injury when he ruptured an Achilles tendon at Friday afternoon training, a week before the cut-off date for the AFL’s pre-season supplemental selection period (“SSP”). McAdam was beginning to get some real mom

RETURN TO NORMAL by Whispering Jack

One of my prized possessions is a framed, autographed guernsey bearing the number 31 worn by my childhood hero, Melbourne’s champion six time premiership player Ronald Dale Barassi who passed away on 16 September 2023, aged 87. The former captain who went on to a successful coaching career, mainly with other clubs, came back to the fold in his later years as a staunch Demon supporter who often sat across the way from me in the Northern Stand of the MCG cheering on the team.
