Changes vs Port

Oliver won't come out unless he's definitively injured, surely. Can't see him being "rested" again in the front half of the season, that just seems overkill.

You'd think Jetta and Tyson are locks, and I doubt we want to ruck Watts again (though I wouldn't hate it), so you'd think Pedersen takes his spot back. Alternatives are Spencer and Dawes, but that seems unlikely to me.

The outs will come from OMac, ANB, Newton, Michie and Hunt.

Another tough week at the table. Three walkup starts returning, and that's ignoring Grimes, Salem and Trengove who are keeping Casey at the top of the ladder, and Vanders who will be at full fitness soon. The pressure on our MFC bottom six is immense.

Like it, but not convinced OMac or Newton will be dropped after only one week in.

I'm not convinced either, but it makes sense to me. Newton was only a late in for Tyson so that's a no brainer. Westhoff and Dixon are just too big and one of them too smart for Omac.

It'll be interesting.

20 possessions as a second string mid and a goal, and loses his place. Bloody stiff, but I can't see a way out of it.

Welcome to the new MFC.

BOM Alice Saturday forecast:

Min 6
Max 20
Mostly sunny.
Possible rainfall: 0 mm
Chance of any rain: 20% rain_20.gif

Mostly sunny. Slight (20%) chance of a shower. Light winds.

Sounds like perfect footy weather!

No excuses if we don't win.  Bring in fresh players like: Van d, Jetta, Tyson and maybe Salem and or Petersen. Rest Oliver, Hunt maybe Wagner.  Not sure who else to rest/omit but I think the 'ins' are fairly obvious.

From the couple of times I've been there even back in preseason he's often in the rehab group, doing run throughs and getting assessed by the physios.

Remember he doesn't have the same background of guys like Scully, Trengove, Viney, Brayshaw etc coming through the elite system and knowing ahead of time what it takes to play AFL and training for that.

It wouldn't surprise me at all if he needed another rest without an injury.

The good thing is he isn't actually injured. Fair enough will be rested, but he will still be able to maintain/build his fitness. It is a shame to see him copping head knocks in the VFL, because he is a level above the VFL. If Brayshaw can smash himself on the track for a few weeks, I would like to see him brought straight into the main side - without playing VFL.

Couldn't think of a more stupid thing to do.

Bizzare really.

Bit worried about Hogans back, he came down hard on it in that marking attempt and looked really proppy afterwards

Seemed pretty good speaking with Burgs after the match I thought,

They'll look at mids especially that are tired or carrying knocks to take the week off.

No way Newton should get dropped, played well, kicked a really important goal. We need to reward hard work and good performance

I would!

If he's not injured, even if it's not this week, he'll be back. And that'll be the case at least until he's overtaken by Weiderman or Hullet.

Like him or not, he straightens us up, and brings experience, leadership and organisation to the forward line. He knows what to do and where to run to, and whatever else, he's agressive and always gives 100%. I don't know that Pedersen or Frost (or anyone else at the moment) do any/all that.

I accept that he hasn't always starred for us, but he's had such a rotten run with injuries, he's never really had a settled run at it either. Overall, I've always felt we're a better team with him in it.

I could be wrong of course (!!), and we shall see, but sooner or later we're going to find out. Injuries permitting.

What the f##k was Watts doing in the ruck today? That can't happen again, far to valuable to the side for that to be happening.

I thought it brought him into the game more. It won't work all the time, but it did today.

He's far more valuable when he's involved in the play and I think it was great to get him up around the ball. Even won some taps.

A couple of ruck contests a quarter are hardly likely to produce serious injury.

And if you're coming at it from the - we need him forward angle - then see point 1, and also note we've done well without him forward.

To say we've done well without him forward....against who...the Lions?

I like that we have a number of small/mid size players that can play forward but we also need tall marking options.

Wondering when Frost would get thrown up. I would love to see him get a block of games playing in a key defensive post.

I'd bring in Pedersen or Dawes to get Watts back to the 3rd tall role. I just don't think Watts as a ruck is a never again proposition.

In fact given that Pedersen and Dawes aren't exactly great in the ruck I'd have a very low threshold for giving Watts the job and if he's ever struggling to get a kick I'd certainly put him in.

Going to be interesting to see what happens with Dawes.

Thoughts on Frost down back?

    UNBACKABLE by The Oracle

They’re billing the Brisbane Lions as a sleeping giant — the best team outside the top eight —and based on their form this month they’re a definite contender for September AFL action. Which is not exactly the best of news if you happen to be Melbourne, the visiting team this week up at the Gabba.  Even though they are placed ahead of their opponent on the AFL table, and they managed to stave off defeat in their last round victory over North Melbourne, this week’s visitors to the Sunshi

    WILDCARDS by KC from Casey

Casey’s season continued to drift into helplessness on Sunday when they lost another home game by a narrow margin, this time six points, in their Round 13 clash with North Melbourne’s VFL combination. The game was in stunning contrast to their last meeting at the same venue when Casey won the VFL Wildcard Match by 101 points. Back then, their standout players were Brodie Grundy and James Jordon who are starring in the AFL with ladder leaders, the Sydney Swans (it turned out to be their last

    LIFE SUPPORT by Whispering Jack

With Melbourne’s season hanging on a thread, Saturday night’s game against North Melbourne unfolded like a scene in a hospital emergency department.  The patient presented to the ward in a bad way. Doctors and nurses pumped life-saving medication into his body and, in the ensuing half hour, he responded with blood returning to his cheeks as he stirred back to life. After a slight relapse, the nurses pumped further medication into the bloodstream and the prognosis started looking good as the
