We're still on the wanting consistency path. It will be an interesting build up to the Brisbane game this week. Effort levels will need to be on the rise to confront a Brisbane outfit who were severely stung at home.

I thought their defense was amazing, we really struggled to hit up easy targets,  and they moved it down the ground sooo easily and with amazing precision.

I have to agree with PG although it was a tough game to watch I thought their defense was far superior to ours and they moved the ball so well going forward once we had coughed it up zig-zagging our way forward, I thought that we could have been a couple of goals closer had it not been for their ability to throw the ball so accurately along with an ability to milk the odd free kick. Every one on our side of the ground could see the throw's bar the 3 in Green, I found some of the decisions quite bewildering. Umpires with no feel for the game add nothing to the game. I walked away from the game feeling a bit hollow but at the same time begrudgingly envious of the Doggies skills and the realization that we are still some way behind them. We really must get a bit more height into our back line and hold our marks. - Go Dee's

i think that Sunday's game shows that we need a fit Spencer, having Max and Spence operating in tandem would have put pressure back on the Bullies with the two of them changing in the forward line. 

Pedo gives his all, but is largely ineffectual as a ruckman and it's just a holding pattern until Max is ready to come back on. It would give us more flexibility with Hogan able to move around the ground, Pedo can switch from forward to defence if needed and force the opposition to move a tall to defence.

just finished watching the replay, while the dogs were really good, some of our play and players were really bad. Our forward line did not pressure, they slipped over, the fumbled marks, missed targets, missed tackles and missed some relatively easy shots at goal. A lot of our players only put in half a game if that, and I have to say I don't like the zone defence any more than I liked the spare man in defence game plan.  We gave the dogs players too much latitude and they used it well. zone defence is only really good against sides that cannot deliver the ball well, that gives you a chance to pickup easy turnovers/possessions.

Its funny you should say that as i was thinking this arvo that bringing Spencer in for that game and playing maxy forward a bit might have been an interesting ploy. Hindsight call yes and perhaps it would have cost too much in the run department but Maxy could have really used a good chop out and Spencer if nothing else would have bashed and crashed the two opposition ruckman.

So opposition players mouth off to a Hogan, or any other footballer for that matter and this is all of sudden news ?

Pray tell - what should his teammates do and why exactly does it mean we lack C.

I get that if a player has a heavy tag on him or receives unnecessary physical attention his teammates should step in and help  - but sledging ?

How about we go with "hey ump - he is calling me names"

My son and I were talking about this on the way home, we both thought you couldn't do a drop kick if you were caught with the ball, as my son said it is technically a free once you get caught and the ball hits the ground.

Then there was the free we didn't get, that I mentioned earlier, when a doggies player scooped the ball out of bounds and we didn't get a free for deliberate OOB or incorrect disposal.

The laws of the game only talk about 'correct disposal', nothing about the ball hitting the ground. Who knows what umpires think, but since most of them are apparently mindreaders and know what players' intentions are, I bet some could convince themselves that a dropkick was what the player was trying to do all along ...

I was merely reporting that it wasn't just sledging, it was relentless sledging - coach's orders.

One of those umpires was Plough,s son who did play at junior level but agree doesn't seem to have a feel for the game

Best Umpire going around is no 32 Jacob Mollison  who comes from a Demon supporting family.

Great find.

I blame the umpires more than McLean though. Players will whatever they can to get free kicks, it's a competition after all. The umpires are the ones who are supposed to see this crap for what it is and police the game correctly.

I had to quote you at the top to get the context - and you are 100% right  - nothing can be done.

Bugg never ever shuts up and Jones and Vince don't mind the yap either.

If it is coaches orders then that coach must feel that Hogan is susceptible  - I say harden the "f" up. (As long as the sledging is within bounds - that is an entirely different discussion).

You jump to a teammates defense for over use of physicality but for verballing ? I say just grown a pair.

Its a 9 point goal in my competition (over 55's vets). Asked the umpire was it dropping the ball if tackled and he said no. Admittedly we have a few different rules cause we are old farts. IMO its dropping the ball because nobody does a drop kick in the AFL. Bill Barrett was the last one I saw do one in about 1968. Almost landed in the centre circle from a kick out (no square in those days)

Someone needs to show the umpires this footage as he has mastered it and frankly he should get a free against for staging.

In every video he keeps his arm low and then raises it quickly and then flings his head back. Umps fall for it everytime!

Someone should've just clothes lined him on Sunday and maybe he won't do it again!

Just something that really frustrates me about how we get portrayed in the media:

St Kilda lost on the weekend by 100 points and kicked only 3 goals in the entire game, but there doesn't appear to be a huge amount of heat on them right now.

I guarantee you that if this happens to us at any point this year, all hell will break loose and all we will hear is "is Roos' heart in it?", "has Melbourne improved?", "we've gone backwards", "need a clean-out" etc. etc..

Not sure why it frustrates me so much, but it does.

Was at the game, and have just finished watching the replay. If anyone saw my post on Sunday morning, I mentioned that I had not seen a Melbourne victory since round 4 2014. It's now at 9 successive defeats. 

My take on the game. We weren't actually that bad, just outplayed in key moments of the game. Hogan hits the post in the first quarter, gawn misses a snap from 20 out etc. Where as the bulldogs had luck in the same instances. 

Gawn had a shocker, but he's still young and learning consistency. Harmes, bugg, Wagner and watts were all poor in the first half. Obviously the umpiring had been spoken about but I didn't find it as poor watching the replay.

Garland in our team just destroys our rebound, we need to get either frost or oscar in and give them an extended run of games when fit. 

Viney is currently in the best dozen midfielders in the game. His ability to work both ways should be an inspiration to his younger team mates. Tyson has had a good month and stretch played his best game. 

It must be frustrating for hogan. One week he is praised for his swagger and confidence, the next when he has a bad game he is thrown under the bus. 20 years old and played less than 30 games. It's just pathetic. He isn't going to kick 7 every week. He didn't have a great game, yet still managed 1 goal and 3 assists, on top of 17 disposals. It's beyond a joke. Be it clowns on here or in the media. I wish we would just let him play footy and sit back and enjoy the ride. 

Lastly, nev jetta is an absolute star. 

We got a lesson from a team that will go a long way into September, and with a bit more composure and cleanliness, that 5 goal margin will be a lot closer in times to come.

Absolutely! On top of that is contract speculation, be it hogan or watts. I see it includes jetta this week. Absolutely does my head in.

This is an amazing sequence and does help me understand why I get so frustrated with the umpiring.

I also had difficulty with a tackle around the hips that slides down as the player struggles forward and is paid as atrip, or last week when the tackle was applied as the player jumped so a chest high tackle became a trip.

While in the back seems to have been removed It is occasionally paid enough to frustrate me perhaps if I saw enough sequence like above I could understand its a skill and trained.

Many of the instances seem to be a player putting themselves at risk but they may well be managing it so that they are not.

And yet these frees seem to always be given against us while we never benefit. I have said before we need to get the umpires in saying we are confused and we need some lessons as we are obviously not tackling correctly

Yeah, you can clearly see him throw the arm up to force the tackle high around the neck.. In instances like this, you need to make a directive as an opposition team-that if he is going to try this, then you go through with the tackle and make him earn the free kick.

These tactics should be stamped out and this will certainly be replicated in junior footy or grass roots. It should be the umpires new focus, not the deliberate rushed behind or whatever the rule of the week is.
