Can't the melbourne footy club do this? Can we trade Jesse to the highest bidder against his wishes? It's probably going to make other players hate our club though if we did!

No. Player has to agree to join prospective club, can't be moved against their will.

I disagree, Jesse has a contract so he has the right to take his time making this decision, we can't and won't force him to do anything

maybe technically correct, but that would turn next year into a huge circus and a major distraction, neither of which would be desirable

Rumoured back issues

Rumoured family illness

Second year blues / kicking troubles

Massive salary cap burden

Contract where he is given additional leave grace to visit home, as well as improve his back and work with a kicking specialist while over there. On considerably reduced dollars in the short term, but with a commitment to the club longer term.

So, who's the best physio and the best goalkicking specialist in Perth? And can we later convince them to move across to Melbourne?

Just so happens I'm a physio and a goal kicking expert goffy. I'm also what you may call a 'life coach' but I'll throw that in for free.

Pick three this year. No pick in round one next year at this stage.

That's not true.  They have their 2017 1st but they can't trade both 2016 and 2017 1sts because they traded 2015 1st and must use 2 in 4 years.

Jason Dover is his manager, so not sure what relevance Petroro has to any of this?

Someone may correct me on this, but I believe Tom Petroro is Jason Dover's boss, so I think he would know something of what was going on.

All well and good Rocky and I do respect your post but why then didn't he extend his contract earlier in the season before putting contract negotiations on hold?

Because of his Dad's health i would have assumed. If he is really crook now it is very unlikely hit has just come on in the last couple of months, in fact we know that's not the case becasuse we had at least two posters intimate his Dad was unwell early in the season.

Its not hard to imagine a scenario where he is loving Melbourne, his Dad is stable and he makes noises about extending his contract. And then unfortunately his dad's health deteriorates and everything changes and he feels he has no choice but to put things on hold. After all he has a contract for 2017.

I really don't understand the debate given what we know about his situation. The scenario outlined by GNF and Nasher above is by far the most likely and logical one to play out, particularly given last Friday Goodwin said as much (ie we are in no hurry).

Confirmed: Hogan has informed our club he intends to re-sign. Contract negotiations have begun and will probably be completed this year but could take up to 6 months.

Hogan put contract negotiations on hold in February. GNF's post was only last month.

So his fathers health got better between February and August then declined again after GNF's post?

Granted, but the club also has a right to protect its investment/s and do what's within its own best interests: if Hogan wants to get to WC but can't this year, then he signs an extension otherwise he'll be wearing a Dockers guernsey in 2017. That is not unreasonable.

People keep repeating over and over that he's contracted for 2017, but all the fact does is highlight the severity if finalising his future.

Contract extensions are nothing new but with free agency these days they play an important part in list management.

What you will see now is teams trading contracted players with one year left to teams that will either do a sign-and-trade deal for the long term, or take on that salary for a year to fulfil their obligations and then free up space in a year with a strong free agency class. It's how it's done in the NBA and it's how it will be done here.

Anyone that wants the club to risk an unsure Hogan and keep him playing for Melbourne in 2017 without agreeing to an extension are shockingly misguided. In 2006 that might have been a reasonable train of thought, but it infuriates me when people say, 'HE'S CONTRACTED AND HE WILL PLAY IN 2017'. It's not that simple in 2016. We stand to lose so much if he leaves after 2017. It is completely unreasonable to argue that he is not "ready" to make a decision. I completely understand there are deeply personal issues here but I'm sorry, we all bang on about no player being bigger than the club and for us to just stop and be casual about it...we stand to lose a lot here.

He either signs an extension or the club trades him.

He either makes a decision or the club trades him.

I'm pretty confident this will be sorted by Christmas.

Unless Hogan and the club signed a contract which stated something like:

"If an extension has not been brokered before the commencement of the trade period prior to the final contract year, the Club reserves the right execute a trade with the best offer and/or suitor available."

Because frankly, if it doesn't, everything in your post means zip.

I think you are on the money Steve.

No manager with half a brain would allow that in a contract let alone the players union.

It would give the player no bargaining power.

I'm not using it to back up what I'm saying, if anything it demonstrates even more the post was completely fabricated or he's been fed the wrong information.

Jesse does not have to make a decision on his future intentions this year. The MFC would preferably want some direction so it can plan for the future either with or without him.

Bottom line is Jesse has a contract for next year.

If he asked for a trade this year one of or both Freo and WCE would have to throw everything but the kitchen sink at us in order for a trade to be facilitated.  It would have to be some sort of mega deal that would be too hard for us to refuse otherwise he plays for us next year.

Gee wiz. They are going to have to let a few players go in order to trade back into the draft.

There list is not looking too flash with Pavlich gone, Munday, Sandilands coming to the end along with a few others. Ballentine, Barlow and Mayne on the way out.  They'll get bugger all for these blokes.

When I got there, they were doing repeat simulations of a stoppage on the wing and then moving the ball inside 50. There seemed to be an emphasis on handballing out of the stoppage, usually there were 3 or 4 handballs to
