That's a very specific statement and timeline. What's the evidence? And if he's a better coach prospect than footballer, I'm all for shifting him from the on-field to the off-field role (if that's what he wants).

Was a typo saying 29, meant to type 20.

Garland has an amazing attention to detail. He will be a line coach one day. Just hope it is for us.

I believe we've tried to get Jr back to the club in a coaching capacity the past, but haven't been able to persuade him.

I wonder if Daniel Cross has assistant coaching ambitions?  Would think he'd have a very good grasp of what's required.

I was under the impression that Garlo has the very shy, retiring personality.  While this wouldn't automatically rule him out, it could hold him back, I reckon.

He certainly does.

How he handballed a 10-metre long ball to an opposition player in his peripheral vision I simply can't fathom.

(If only he played the game as he 'sees it'..)

I wonder what Kane Cornes is up to since finishing up his footy at the end of 2015.

He made a career out of having a brilliant football IQ. Also has coaching in the veigns. I wonder if he looks at leaving the SA for an afl gig

Next few weeks will be telling. Colin Garland is one of the most astute footballers to play for Melbourne in the last 29 years.

Expect he would rather coach than play in the 2's.

Colin Sylvia maybe ?

But being serious, does anyone know what James McDonald is doing and what are his aspirations?

WTF?

Aside from disagreeing with your 2nd sentence it doesn't make sense. If he was a smart footballer then he would know what to do and play that way. If he had coaching desires he would be an on-field coach. He's in the leadership group but was dropped. Why do you think that was? And why do you think he would walk into a coaching role at the club?

I am flummoxed by your post.

James McDonald has gone into the farming and agricultural industry. The company he works for delivers alot of cattle up our way.

Not interested. He loves what he is doing right now.

What about getting Chopper Lovell back into the ranks? Has been an assistant at Gold Coast for years

Nah just the stupid handball in the first quarter that cost us a goal. In a real game.

Well good luck to him and too bad for us.

So glad he is going well.

Ben Mathews seems to be doing a reasonable job.  Some of the set plays in the fwd line went ok.

He's a firefighter, that's the reason he retired because he got offered a rare opportunity to join the fire brigade.

I could say Ron Barassi but I won't.What interests me is that some of the most astute and successful coaches haven't been great players. Clarkson was a thug and a battler, Tom Hafey was a battler, Luke Beveridge ditto. Sheedy was a full time thug, Malthouse was an honest toiler. Timmy Watson, James Hird, Voss, Schimilbusch, Hart, Primus, Buckley, (hey, thanks Eddie, baby,) Knights,Bourke, Bartlett etc were great footballers, lousy coaches...

Then there were the greats like Barassi, Smith, Matthews (THUG), Blight, Alves and a few others who could do both.

The name that rings my bells is Nathan Bassett,a dud at Melbourne, a star in hometown Adelaide.

You need to refresh your coaching team regularly. We can't continue with the same team.

Look at Richmond. No changes to their support coaching staff. They are bereft of ideas.

I thought Jrn McDonald had left the football industry to run a big farm?

You know the story, old McDonald had a farm, and all that....

Seriously

Demonland Trackwatchers braved the sweltering heat to bring you their Preseason Training observations from Gosch's Paddock on Monday morning. SCOOP JUNIOR'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS I went down today in what were pretty ordinary conditions - hot and windy. When I got there, they were doing repeat simulations of a stoppage on the wing and then moving the ball inside 50. There seemed to be an emphasis on handballing out of the stoppage, usually there were 3 or 4 handballs to

A few new faces joined our veteran Demonland Trackwatchers on a beautiful morning out at Gosch's Paddock for another Preseason Training Session. BLWNBA'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS I arrived at around 1015 and the squad was already out on the track. The rehab group consisted of XL, McAdam, Melksham, Spargo and Sestan. Lever was also on restricted duties and appeared to be in runners.  The main group was doing end-to-end transition work in a simulated match situation. Ball mov

WAYNE WUSSELL'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS Rehab: Lever, Spargo, McAdam, Lindsay, Brown Sinnema is excellent by foot and has a decent vertical leap. Windsor is training with the Defenders. Windsor's run won't be lost playing off half back. In 19 games in 2024 he kicked 8 goals as a winger. I see him getting shots at g

BEST OF THE REST by Meggs

Meggs' Review of Melbourne's AFLW Season 9 ... Congratulations first off to the North Melbourne Kangaroos on winning the 2024 AFLW Premiership. Roos Coach Darren Crocker has assembled a team chock-full of competitive and highly skilful players who outclassed the Brisbane Lions in the Grand Final to remain undefeated throughout Season 9. A huge achievement in what was a dominant season by North. For Melbourne fans, the season was unfortunately one of frustration and disappointment
