Roos either sorely underestimates this team and has them bog it down, or he overestimates them and thinks they have the capacity to score quickly against a flood.

 

Two weeks in a row, the opposition has toweld Melbourne up on the transition and getting into space. They play with zero confidence and instead allow the opposition to control the ball across the middle of the ground.

 

Melbourne just out-Melbourne'd itself. And Paul Roos is front and center there. He lost that game for them today. It should have been a case of run and gun today. Instead, he coached the team directly into the Bombers' hands.

 

Taking nothing away from Essendon. They stood up and were deserving winners.

Terrific post.

Roos effort was the poorest of the day in my opinion.

Disagree. While the players were pathetic today, as were the umpires, so we're our coaches.

they had a loose man on each wing at every centre bounce and then played through them all day. These guys then ran without an opponent and were the link men setting up their thrusts the whole day.

Why the hell weren't they manned up? I would love an MFC coach to tell me. That and a poor player effort cost us the game.

BTW, I think we have problem with the $10million Man. He does not do any 1%'s at all. His body language is a disgrace. Yes he is talented,  but he needs effort as well as talent. Too many on here hero worship him and I think he knows it.

The coaching was pathetic.

 

All game we allowed them to have free runners off half back. It was appalling coaching not to close that down the entire game.

He was terribly outcoached today. We lost by 2 goals after being absolutely annihilated. A few moves, a change in direction and some space, and we'd have run away with it even after being so poor. Again, we were shocking yet only lost by 2 goals.

We were out-coached today. The players lacked class and attack and all that jazz, but there were some key areas that ultimately drove Essendon to the win. Rarely do you have a forward take 15 marks, 9 inside 50, and lose. Their spread and cuts through the middle were not through a lack of Melbourne players not chasing: they were ALWAYS chasing. They were just badly out of position. The same thing happened last week though..but Roos didn't bring it up. So this week's it's an issue. Notice how much things changed in the last quarter last week?

He seems prepared to take credit for a win when he changes things up, but when he's stubborn and he coaches to stem the opposition's score rather than to attack the scoreboard, it's the player's fault.

I think Roos has been exposed these first two weeks. And badly.

That Tipawungi or whatever his name is was brilliant for them. Has a bit of David Wirripunda about him. Just so cool and calm with ball in hand.

Agreed, i can't recall him having any impact today. Just because TMac and Garlo can get to a contest and spoil from behind, and occasionaly run off, does not a good footballer make. If you can't hit regular targets, and/or those targets don't run hard enough to create space/options for whoever it is doing the running off HB then it's coming back just as quickly to loose players (who those HBs just ran away from) for the easy rebound mark/shot at goal, as we witnessed today far too often.

I'd love to see you guys have a dip at Daniher when our midfield applies zero pressure.  There was a reason they were able to have 20 odd scoring shots, and our defence wasn't the main problem.

Today we saw two massive failures, one from the team and one from the coaches. 

Team: our kicking was putrid.  At half time, EVERY ONE of the bomber's goals had come from turnovers.  Think about that.  If we had been able to hit our targets, they wouldn't have had a goal for the half. It's been years since I've seen such a poor display of basic skills, and the pressure is no excuse.  They are supposed to be a team of competitive beasts but the moment they were put under pressure they crumbled. 

Coaches: What the hell were they thinking dropping everyone behind the ball like that?  Where was the forward pressure?  We would take the ball to HF, turn it over and immediately the entire team turned and ran back to our defensive 50.  Was this supposed to ensure that they wouldn't take any marks in range of the goals?  It certainly didn't achieve that goal.  All it did was give the Bombers the freedom to chip the ball down the field under no pressure and rack up extra uncontested stats. 

On a side note, what the hell does Hogan think he's doing?  He's supposed to be an endurance athlete.  His game is built around mobility.  The last thing he should be doing is standing in the goalsquare surrounded by opponents and calling for the ball to be dropped on his head.  He needs to get on his bike and start working his man over, long runs up to the wing, back to the square, back out to CHF, etc.  He's no use to anyone just wasting away down there.

Poor coaching and poor selections contribute. You reap what yiou sow! The embarrasment I feel is is palpable!

All things considered this is the worst loss in the history of the game.

Kent looked like a very average and lazy VFL footballer in comparison. A great game from the young rookie. All class and knows how to find the ball and runs into the right spaces. Then again it's only the MFC they were up against. Any solid/great game played against us should be taken with a grain of salt. Review again when they play againt a genuine team of footballers who have a real hunger for the contest and truly hate losing.

But seeing some posts on Hogan is poor .. Kpp in his second year still learning to play @ this level & dealing with 2 players manning up .. Expectations too high  on a young player..

He has admitted that he was out-coached. Selection is part and parcel of coaching. He brought the wrong squad in, and there was no plan B. It was still winnable despite being smashed.

If Roos seriously thinks that it was a good idea to play Lumumba after what he just dished up, then I'm just gobsmacked. He is the turnover king, a million times worse than M. Jones.
